His Mistress Laughed About the Baby My Husband Killed Chapter 1

The shift supervisor caught me on my way out of the break room. "Spencer, you're on VIP escort. High-spend client. Private Strip tour. They requested someone experienced."

I nodded and grabbed the tablet with the itinerary. VIP jobs paid better tips. I needed better tips. My hands were cracked again from last night's double shift washing dishes at the casino restaurant. The lotion wasn't helping anymore.

The lobby of the Wynn was all gold light and cold marble. I spotted my client immediately. She stood near the fountain in a white dress that probably cost more than I made in six months. Her sunglasses were oversized. Her bag had that unmistakable Hermès orange peeking from the dust cover. A small boy, maybe four or five, clung to her hand.

I walked over with my professional smile locked in place. "Good morning. I'm Blaire, your tour guide for today. You must be Ms. Rose."

She glanced at me the way you glance at furniture. No eye contact. Just a brief sweep to confirm I existed. "We're ready. Let's go."

No greeting. No smile back. Fine. I'd had worse clients.

I led them to the car and started the route. Bellagio first, then Caesars, then the Venetian. I gave the script I'd memorized months ago. History of the Strip. Anecdotes about high rollers. The boy, Kaysen, pressed his face to the window and pointed at everything. He was sweet. Excited. His mother scrolled through her phone and said nothing.

We were standing outside the Bellagio watching the fountains when her phone lit up on the ledge beside her purse. The screen flashed with an incoming call.

Contact name: **G ❤️**

Profile photo: a man in a dark suit, smiling at the camera.

My husband.

Graham.

I stopped breathing.

Kaysen tugged his mother's sleeve and pointed at the screen. His voice was bright and certain. "Daddy!"

Yaretzi swiped the call away without answering. She didn't look at me. I don't think she realized I'd seen.

I kept talking. Something about water choreography. Something about engineering. My mouth moved on autopilot. Inside, my chest had gone completely cold.

A few minutes later, her phone rang again. Same contact. This time she answered. She stepped a few feet away, half-turned toward the fountain, voice low but not low enough.

I stood very still. Kaysen was crouched near the railing, watching the water. I pretended to check my tablet. I didn't move. I barely breathed.

"...yeah, she's still over there," Yaretzi said into the phone. Her tone was casual. Amused, even. "Scrubbing dishes like you said she would. She doesn't suspect a thing."

My hands tightened on the tablet.

"The bankruptcy story was his masterpiece," she continued, laughing softly. "Five years and she still believes it. You should see the texts she sends him. 'I'm so proud of you, honey. We'll get through this together.'"

I felt something crack open inside my ribs.

"The vitamin switch was the cleanest thing he ever did," Yaretzi said, her voice dropping slightly. "No one even questioned the miscarriage. And now she can't have kids at all. Perfect."

The world tilted.

"Once she signs the adoption papers, Kaysen gets everything. Her dead parents' trust fund pays for our life, and she'll never even know."

I heard her laugh again. Light. Delighted.

My phone buzzed in my pocket.

I pulled it out with numb fingers.

A text from Graham.

**"I've been thinking, sweetheart. What if we adopted a child? An orphan who needs a home. I think it would finally complete our family."**

I stared at the screen.

Then at Kaysen, crouched by the railing, his small hands pressed against the stone.

Then at Yaretzi, still on the phone, her diamond rings catching the light.

Then at my own hands. Cracked. Red. Scarred from five years of hot water and industrial soap.

I had washed dishes for this man. I had lived in a one-room apartment with no heat. I had sent every dollar home. I had believed him when he said we had nothing. I had grieved our lost baby alone in a foreign country, thinking it was God's will or bad luck or my own failing body.

And he had done it. On purpose. All of it.

I excused myself. My voice sounded calm. Professional. "Restroom break. I'll be right back."

Yaretzi waved me off without looking.

I walked into the Bellagio lobby, found the restroom, and locked myself in a stall. I stood over the sink and gripped the porcelain edge until my knuckles went white.

I let myself feel it for sixty seconds.

The grief. The rage. The five years I would never get back.

Sixty seconds.

Then I turned on the faucet, washed my face, and looked at myself in the mirror.

The woman looking back was different.

I dried my hands. Straightened my uniform. Walked back outside.

Yaretzi was taking a selfie with Kaysen in front of the fountain. She didn't look up when I returned.

I smiled.

"Ready to continue the tour?"
