Her Stolen Ivy League Life Chapter 1

The heavy mahogany doors swing open, revealing the woman who stole my life.

She sits across from me, her designer suit immaculate, her smile sickeningly confident.

A gold-lettered Yale resume slides across my desk.

Right at the top, printed in bold ink, is my real name.

Nineteen years ago, my adoptive parents locked me in a basement while she took my perfect SAT scores.

They sent her to the Ivy League, leaving me to scrub diner floors.

She thinks she is interviewing for the Vice President of Strategy role.

She thinks the interviewer is just another corporate hurdle.

Her manicured hand freezes mid-air as I slowly rotate my leather chair to face her.

I pick up my platinum fountain pen and cross out the name on her application.

She gasps, the color draining from her perfect, stolen face.

"Your resume is fraudulent," I say, my voice echoing in the silent boardroom.

"Let's start with your name."

***

The gold-stamped resume on my mahogany desk boasted a name that used to belong to me.

I pressed the pad of my thumb against the smooth barrel of my custom solid gold Montblanc pen. The engraved initials felt cold against my skin. Nineteen years ago, the only thing I owned was the suffocating stench of mildew trapped inside a locked, windowless attic.

Today, the thief who put me there was walking into my office.

The heavy glass door swung inward.

Elena strode across the executive suite, her limited-edition stilettos sinking silently into the plush Persian rug. She wore a tailored ivory suit that screamed old money, her fingers wrapped loosely around the handle of a matte-crimson Hermes Kelly bag.

"Ms. Halloway," Elena said, flashing a perfectly practiced, cover-girl smile. "Thank you for seeing me on such short notice. I know the Vice President position is highly competitive."

She stopped in front of the desk and slid the thick, textured paper forward.

I remained facing the floor-to-ceiling window, the afternoon sun casting my silhouette over the leather chair.

"Competitive," I repeated softly, keeping my eyes on the city skyline. "That is one word for it."

I pivoted the seat to face her.

Elena beamed, gesturing to the document. "As you can see, my qualifications speak for themselves. I bring a very specific pedigree to this firm. The Thorne family name opens doors that most people do not even know exist."

I picked up the resume. The heavy paper felt rough against my fingertips. My eyes caught the top lines.

Elena Thorne. Only Daughter of the Thorne Estate. Yale University, Summa Cum Laude.

"Pedigree," I said, tasting the word. "You credit your success to your upbringing, then?"

"Absolutely," Elena replied without missing a beat. She crossed her legs, settling into the guest chair like she already owned the building. "My father, Marcus Thorne, instilled a rigorous work ethic in me from a young age. Growing up as an only child on the estate meant all his expectations fell on my shoulders. I was tutored by the best, mentored by industry leaders, and groomed for executive leadership."

"It sounds exhausting," I said, keeping my expression entirely blank. "All that pressure on one person."

"I thrive under pressure," Elena countered smoothly. "Yale was a breeze compared to my father's standards. I graduated top of my class because I simply do not accept failure. I take what I want, and I make it mine."

"You take what you want," I echoed. "And you make it yours."

"Exactly." Elena smiled, clearly pleased with herself. "The corporate world requires a killer instinct. I learned early on that if you leave an opening, someone else will take your place. You have to eliminate the competition before they even know they are competing."

"A fascinating philosophy," I murmured. "Did you apply that killer instinct to your peers at Yale?"

Elena waved a dismissive hand. "Academia is different. It is mostly theory. But yes, I dominated my study groups. People naturally look to a Thorne for leadership."

"I see." I uncapped the Montblanc. The gold nib glinted under the recessed lighting. "Let us talk more about Yale. Did you enjoy the architecture in New Haven? The Gothic revival buildings must have been quite a sight."

A tiny frown pulled at the corners of Elena's mouth. "Of course. It was beautiful."

"And your thesis on corporate ethics?" I asked, tapping the pen against the edge of the desk. "Defending it must have been a proud moment. Who was your advisor again? Professor Higgins?"

Elena shifted in her chair, her posture stiffening. "It was a long time ago. Professor Higgins, yes. He was brilliant."

"Higgins," I repeated, letting the name hang in the air. "Interesting. Considering the business school never had a Professor Higgins on staff."

Elena's eyes darted to the side for a fraction of a second. "I might be misremembering the name. It has been years, and I have managed dozens of executives since then."

"Right. Details fade," I said smoothly. "But some things you never forget. Like the smell of the old library. Or the exact wording on your diploma."

"Ms. Halloway, I assume we are going to discuss my operational strategies for your firm, rather than administering a pop quiz on my college days?"

"I just like to understand the people I hire," I said. "Integrity is paramount here."

I pressed the pen to the paper. The sharp metal tip dug into the thick fibers.

A harsh, jagged black line tore straight through the words Only Daughter.

Elena dropped her cover-girl smile. Her perfectly arched brows pulled together, creating a deep crease in her forehead. "Excuse me? What are you doing?"

I did not answer. I moved the pen down the page.

Another thick, bleeding line of ink obliterated the Yale degree.

"Stop!" Elena snapped, her polite facade cracking wide open. Her fingers clamped down hard on the edge of her Hermes bag, the leather bending under her sudden grip. "That is an original document. Do you have any idea who you are dealing with?"

I tossed the ruined paper back across the desk. It slid over the polished wood and stopped inches from her stomach.

"I know exactly who I am dealing with," I said, my voice dropping an octave. "The better question is, does your father know who you really are?"

Elena stood up, her chair scraping loudly against the floor. The color drained from her cheeks, leaving her designer bronzer looking like dirt smeared on a pale canvas.

"I am the sole heir to the Thorne empire," she forced out, though her voice shook. "I do not know what kind of power trip you are on, but I will ruin you for this. I will make one phone call and have you blacklisted from every firm in this city. You will never work in this industry again."

"Call him," I challenged. I leaned back into the leather chair and crossed my arms. "Put Marcus on speaker. Right now."

Her hand hovered over her purse, but she did not reach for her phone. Her chest rose and fell in rapid, shallow breaths.

"Tell him you are sitting across from the girl you locked in the west wing attic nineteen years ago," I said.

The silence in the room became absolute. The faint hum of the air conditioning suddenly sounded like a roaring engine.

Elena opened her mouth, but no sound came out. Her eyes widened, scanning my face, searching the angles of my jaw and the shape of my eyes. The arrogance melted away, replaced by raw, unfiltered panic.

"Tell him how you stole the acceptance letter," I continued, keeping my tone razor-sharp. "Tell him how you paid the estate staff to look the other way while you took my name, my trust fund, and my entire future. Tell him how you watched the flames spread and walked away."

"You are dead," Elena whispered. She took a step back, her heel catching on the edge of the rug. "You died in the fire."

"Mildew and smoke," I said. "That smell never really washes out, does it?"

"Shut up."

"You built your entire existence on a corpse that refused to burn," I said, pointing the gold pen at the ruined resume. "You are not the only daughter. You never set foot in a Yale classroom. You are a parasite wearing expensive clothes, living a life you stole from a ten-year-old girl."

"I said shut up!" Elena screamed.

The Hermes bag hit the floor, spilling lipstick, a compact mirror, and keys across the rug.

"You want this job?" I asked, standing up to meet her eye level. "You want to run my company? You do not even know how to run your own lies. You walked right into my building, handed me my own stolen identity, and expected me to pay you for it."

Her hands darted forward, manicured nails scraping against the polished mahogany. She grabbed the heavy crystal paperweight resting near the edge of my desk.

"I will kill you again!" she shrieked.

Her arm drew back, the sharp glass edges catching the sunlight as she hurled it directly at my face.
