I Let You Keep the Son and Mansion, Why Is Your Mother Crying at My Castle Gates? Chapter 1

At 2:00 AM in a torrential downpour, both of my six-year-old twins were burning with a dangerous 104°F fever. While I scrambled for coats, my mother-in-law took the only cooling patch, and my husband carried our son into his luxury SUV. He looked at our shivering, gasping daughter and told me girls were resilient and hot water was enough, while my mother-in-law called Noah the sole male heir of the Kane family. Then he drove off, spraying muddy water all over my freezing child. That night, I took off my wedding ring and sent an emergency signal to my billionaire father's network. When we signed the divorce settlement, my spoiled son screamed that he wanted to stay in the mansion with Daddy, while tiny Mia packed her pink backpack and gripped my hand tight. They thought I was a broke, discarded housewife. Soon, they’d find out who truly owned this city.

***

Rain slammed against the French windows, rattling the glass as thunder tore through the midnight sky.

In the nursery, six-year-old twins Noah and Mia lay trembling under their sheets. Their skin burned against my palms like hot coals. When I pressed the digital thermometer against Mia’s forehead, the screen flashed a terrifying 104.2 degrees. Seconds later, Noah’s reading showed the exact same number.

Both of my children were starting to convulse, their small limbs jerking uncontrollably.

"Hold on, babies. Mommy's right here," I whispered, panic clawing at my throat.

I sprinted down the hall to the living room medicine cabinet, tearing open boxes and throwing bottles aside. My hands shook so violently that pills scattered across the floor. At the very bottom of the drawer, I found a single pediatric cooling patch.

Just one.

I pulled out my phone with trembling fingers and dialed emergency services.

"Nine-one-one, what's your emergency?"

"My six-year-old twins have fevers over a hundred and four! They're convulsing—I need an ambulance right now!"

"Ma'am, flash floods have shut down the main expressway on the north side," the dispatcher replied, voices shouting in the background. "All available units are currently deployed. Estimated wait time is at least forty-five minutes."

"Forty-five minutes? They could suffer brain damage by then!"

Before the dispatcher could answer, heavy footsteps echoed down the grand staircase.

My husband, Marcus, strode into the room, followed closely by his mother, Evelyn. Marcus had his car keys in hand, his designer coat already zipped up.

"What is all this screaming about, Charlotte?" Evelyn snapped, her sharp eyes scanning the messy counter. "You can't even keep the children quiet for one night?"

"They're burning up!" I said, holding up the single cooling patch. "Both of them have a hundred and four fever. The ambulances can't get through the flood. Marcus, we have to drive them to the hospital right now."

Evelyn didn't waste a second. She lunged forward and snatched the cooling patch straight out of my hands.

"Give me that!" she ordered, turning immediately toward Noah's side of the room. She peeled the backing and slapped the patch firmly onto Noah's forehead.

"Evelyn, wait!" I cried, rushing after her. "Mia is seizing too! We need to split the medication or—"

"Quiet!" Evelyn cut me off with a glare. "Noah is the sole male heir of this family. If anything happens to my grandson's brain, you'll never make up for it for the rest of your life!"

Marcus scooped Noah into his arms, wrapping him tightly in a cashmere blanket. "I called Sacred Heart Private Hospital. The director arranged a VIP pediatric ICU suite for Noah. We're leaving now."

He turned on his heel toward the front entrance, completely ignoring Mia, who was whimpering on the couch, her tiny lips turning blue.

"Marcus, take Mia too!" I pleaded, scooping my daughter into my arms. Her little body was scorching hot, her breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps. "She needs the hospital just as much as Noah does!"

"There's no time to argue," Marcus said coldly, pushing open the heavy front door as a blast of freezing rain swept inside.

I followed him out into the downpour, the freezing water drenching us instantly. Rain plastered my hair to my face as I ran after his long strides down the driveway toward his black Maybach.

"Marcus! Please, unlock the passenger door!" I shouted over the roar of the thunder, shielding Mia's head against my chest. "Just let us in!"

Marcus placed Noah carefully into the front passenger seat, clicked the seatbelt, and turned around to block the rear door with his body.

"You can't come," he said flatly.

I stared at him in disbelief, the freezing rain stinging my eyes. "What are you talking about? She's your daughter! Look at her, Marcus, she can barely breathe!"

"Look through the window, Charlotte," Marcus said, his voice hard and dismissive. "The entire backseat is packed with Noah's limited-edition racetrack set and his tournament gear. I'm not unloading all of that in the middle of a storm."

"Throw it on the ground!" I screamed, desperation ripping through my voice. "Those are plastic toys! This is your child's life!"

"Those toys cost twenty thousand dollars," Marcus snapped, his face twisting with irritation. "Besides, girls are resilient. Go back inside, boil some hot water, and make her drink it. Wrap her in a couple of blankets and she'll sleep it off by morning."

"Are you insane? She's at a hundred and four! She could die!"

I lunged forward, trying to grab the rear door handle to pull it open myself.

Marcus didn't hesitate. He raised his arm and shoved me hard in the chest.

The force knocked me completely off balance. My foot slipped on the wet gravel, and I crashed violently onto the concrete driveway. The only thought in my mind was protecting Mia, so I twisted my body mid-fall, taking the entire impact on my shoulder and hip while cradling her against my stomach.

Pain shot through my joints, but I kept my arms locked around my daughter.

Marcus looked down at us with nothing but disgust in his eyes. "Stop making a scene in the driveway. You're pathetic."

He got into the driver's seat and slammed the door shut.

The engine roared to life. Marcus floored the accelerator, and the Maybach shot backward before speeding down the private road. The tires spun furiously against the gravel, kicking up a wave of freezing, muddy water that washed completely over Mia and me.

The red taillights vanished into the darkness of the storm.

I sat in the puddle of mud, shivering violently from the cold and the sheer shock of what had just happened. For six years, I had hidden my real identity, endured his mother's endless contempt, and played the role of a gentle, submissive wife, believing Marcus genuinely loved our family.

Every scrap of that illusion was washed away in the dirt.

A tiny, burning hand reached up, weakly touching my cheek.

Mia was shivering in my arms, her eyelids fluttering as she struggled to stay conscious. With the last bit of strength in her fragile frame, she used her small thumb to wipe the mixture of rain and tears from my face.

"Mommy..." she whispered, her voice barely audible over the howling wind. "Don't cry... Mia doesn't hurt..."

A coughing fit racked her chest, and she leaned her forehead against my neck.

"Mommy, don't be mad at Daddy," she murmured, her words slurring from the raging fever. "Grandma said... Mia is just a girl. Girls don't deserve the hospital... I'll just drink warm water... I'll be good..."

Those words felt like a serrated blade tearing through my heart.

The final trace of warmth and affection in my eyes died right then and there.

"No, baby," I said, my voice steadying with a cold, absolute resolve. "You deserve the entire world. And Mommy is going to save you."

I pulled my wedding ring from my finger and slipped it into my coat pocket.

I stood up from the muddy gravel, wrapping my heavy winter coat tight around Mia's shivering body to shield her from the gale. I turned my back on the empty mansion and walked straight into the blinding rain toward the estate gates.

Reaching inside the waterproof inner pocket of my coat, my fingers found a hidden seam. I tore the lining open and pulled out a sleek, matte-black device—the Vance family global emergency rescue satellite terminal.

It was an encrypted communicator I hadn't touched in six long years.

I flipped open the safety cover and pressed the central red button.

The screen illuminated instantly with a stark crimson glow, cutting through the darkness of the night.
