He Won Everything But Her Chapter 1

The paper crumpled under my fingers.

Positive. Four weeks.

For twelve months, I had been Elias Thorne’s wife in ink only. A contract signed to satisfy his grandfather's dying wish, granting me shelter and keeping his empire steady. One year of sleeping in separate wings of his penthouse.

Except for three weeks ago. One rain-slicked Tuesday night when Elias stumbled through the front door reeking of Scotch, cornered me against the hall table, and whispered a broken name against my neck before pulling me into the dark.

It had been an accident. A mistake born of his bourbon and my quiet yearning.

Yet now, staring at the clinical printout, a foolish, dangerous ember sparked in my chest. A child changes things. It had to. Maybe it meant we could finally stop playing ghosts in the same mansion. Maybe he would stay.

The heavy front door swung open with a muffled thud.

Laughter drifted down the marble corridor—high-pitched, airy, and dripping with silk.

"Elias, darling, you promised we’d take the penthouse elevator straight up," a woman cooed.

I froze, folding the medical paper tightly into my palm.

Elias walked into the foyer, his tailored charcoal suit jacket hooked over two fingers across his shoulder. His tie hung loose against his collar. Beside him clung a tall woman poured into an emerald slip dress, her red-painted nails resting possessively against his lapel.

Neither of them paused. Elias didn't even flick his gaze toward the parlor where I stood.

"You’re impatient, Chloe," Elias said smoothly, his deep voice carrying that effortless velvet rasp. "Good things require an appetite."

The woman—Chloe—giggled, nuzzling her chin into the crook of his neck. "Show me your art collection first. You swore you had an original Basquiat in the private lounge."

"Through there," Elias said, pointing toward the wide hall that led past my small study.

I stepped out into the bright light of the entryway. My knuckles went white.

"Elias."

His stride hitched, barely half a second, before he kept walking. He didn't turn around.

"Go upstairs, Mae," he said flatly.

"I need to speak with you," I said, my voice shaking despite my best efforts to steady it. "It can't wait."

Chloe stopped, finally noticing me. Her painted eyebrows lifted in mock surprise, taking in my oversized knit sweater, my bare feet, and the plain silver band on my left ring finger.

"Who’s this, Elias?" Chloe asked, leaning into his arm. "The live-in help? She’s a little underdressed for greeting guests."

A sharp heat rose in my throat. I looked at Elias, waiting for him to correct her. Just once. Just three words: *She is my wife.*

Elias merely glanced at his luxury timepiece.

"She manages the house," he muttered, brushing a strand of dark hair away from Chloe’s temple. "Ignore her."

The casual cruelty struck like a slap across the cheek. Twelve months of cooking his meals, keeping his schedule, enduring the freezing quiet of this mausoleum—reduced to invisible domestic help.

"Elias, look at me," I demanded, stepping directly into his path.

He finally raised his eyes. Cold, polished steel gray. Not a flicker of warmth. Not even the faint trace of the man who had buried his face in my hair three weeks ago, trembling in the dark.

"You have thirty seconds," Elias said, his voice dropping into the clipped tone he used on underperforming board members. "Then you go to your room and lock the door."

Chloe watched with an amused smirk, crossing her bare arms.

My chest heaved. I held out the crumpled paper between us.

"I went to the clinic this morning," I said, every word costing me blood. "I’m pregnant."

Silence dropped over the marble hall like a dead weight.

Chloe’s smirk vanished, her eyes widening slightly as she looked between us.

For two heartbeats, Elias stared at the white slip of paper. His jaw hardened, the line of his mouth turning razor-thin. No shock broke across his features. No flicker of regret. Only an icy, suffocating annoyance.

"Whose is it?" Elias asked.

The breath tore out of my lungs. "What?"

"You heard me," he said without blinking. "Whose is it?"

"It’s yours, Elias! You know it’s yours!" My voice cracked, echoing off the high ceilings. "Three weeks ago. You came home drunk. You—"

"Enough," he snapped, cutting me off with a flick of his wrist.

He didn't pull away from Chloe. In fact, his arm casually slid down to rest along the curve of Chloe's waist.

"You took an emergency pill the next morning," Elias said, tone flat and devoid of humanity. "I told my assistant to have one delivered to the counter."

"I took it," I whispered, tears blurring the edges of his cruel, handsome face. "It failed. The doctor said—"

"Get rid of it."

The words were so quick, so completely detached, that I thought my ears were playing tricks on me.

"What did you say?"

"Get rid of it," Elias repeated clearly, staring right through me. "Schedule an appointment for Monday morning. Charge the private clinic to the household account. It won't be a problem."

"It's a child, Elias," I choked out, clutching the paper against my stomach. "Our child. I thought... I thought we could try. We could make this real. A real family."

Chloe let out a soft, mocking scoff.

Elias didn't even flinch. A bitter smirk touched the corner of his lips.

"A family?" He scoffed under his breath. "Mae, look at yourself. You’re a placeholder on a legal deed. You signed a three-year term to keep my father's board happy. Did you actually invent a fantasy in your head because I touched you once in a blackout?"

"Elias..."

"I don't want a child," he said, stepping forward until his shadow swallowed me whole. His cologne hit me—sandalwood and expensive scotch. "And I sure as hell don't want one with you. Terminate it, or pack your bags and leave tonight without a single cent from the settlement."

The room spun. My knees threatened to buckle, the cold tile beneath my bare feet turning to ice.

"You're a monster," I whispered.

"I’m a businessman," he countered smoothly. "And this is bad business."

Before I could draw another breath, Elias turned his back on me completely. He cupped Chloe’s jaw with his large hand, tilting her face up toward his.

"Where were we?" he murmured against Chloe's lips.

Chloe smiled against his mouth, casting a venomous, triumphant glance over his shoulder straight at me. "You were going to show me your bedroom, darling."

"Right," Elias whispered.

Then, right in front of me, in the hall I had scrubbed, under the roof of the home I had tried so desperately to warm, he brought his mouth down on hers. Deep, hungry, and unhurried. Crushing my remaining shreds of pride beneath their feet.

They walked up the grand staircase together, Chloe’s giggles trailing behind them like shards of glass.

I stood frozen in the cold foyer, holding a crumpled paper that meant life, while realizing that to the man upstairs, it was nothing more than an inconvenient mistake.
