He Sacrificed Our Daughter for His Mistress’s Promotion Chapter 1

My firefighter husband, Ethan Caldwell, deliberately set a fire at home while I was out, to help Claire Bennet pass her probation as soon as possible

Instantly, flames shot up into the sky, swallowing our three-year-old daughter who was fast asleep inside.

When I got a notification from the home surveillance system, I rushed back in a panic.

What greeted me was a scene straight out of a nightmare.

Claire cradling her unconscious, badly burned daughter in her arms like some goddess of salvation, surrounded by flashing cameras and reporters.

Beside her, Fire Chief Ethan—my husband—stood tall, his face full of pride.

"This time, it was all thanks to Claire," he said in front of the cameras. "Even though she’s just an intern, she risked her life to save this poor child who would’ve burned to death otherwise."

Then he turned to the press with disgust in his voice. "And the mother, Rachel Monroe? Completely irresponsible. Left her child alone just to go out and have fun!"

——

I stood at the edge of the crowd, frozen.

Through the gaps between people, I saw Ethan and Claire wrapped in flashing lights and eager praise.

He looked at her like she was the brightest star in the sky and she shyly blushed under his gaze.

“Even though I’m the only woman on the team,” she said softly, holding my daughter in her arms, “I just did what a firefighter should do.”

In her arms, my child—my baby girl—was barely recognizable. Her clothes and hair were burned away. Her little body was covered in blisters and raw skin.

Right next to her stood Claire—her face full of makeup, not a trace of smoke or ash on her perfect skin.

The contrast was striking.

And the cameras loved it.

“This photo is going to go viral!”

“What a brave woman! A true hero!”

“The world should see this beautiful firefighter risking her life!”

Ethan and Claire exchanged a quiet glance. Their faces showed no sadness, only joy barely hidden behind calm expressions.

Then, while still holding my unconscious daughter, Claire casually changed her pose for the cameras, tilting her chin slightly for the best angle. She didn’t even glance at the child in her arms, who was clinging to life by a thread.

The pain stabbed through my chest like a steel blade.

I slapped myself hard, again and again, trying to wake myself up from what felt like a cruel dream.

I pushed forward through the crowd, trying to get to my daughter.

“Give her back to me...”

Before I could finish speaking, Ethan noticed me.

He quickly handed the microphone to Claire, then stormed over and dragged me out of the crowd with force.

“Where the hell were you?” he shouted.

“If it wasn’t for Claire, our daughter would’ve died in that fire! I let you stay home to look after her, not run around playing!”

He didn’t even give me a chance to speak.

“Enough,” he snapped. “Go pack your things and get to the hospital. Take care of your daughter, since you’re so concerned now!”

His words hit me like a slap.

But he had forgotten one thing.

I wasn’t just a firefighter. I was one of the most decorated in the city.

I had been through more fires than either of them could count.

I knew the difference between an accident and arson the moment I walked through a burned door and I saw it clearly today.

Potassium permanganate and glycerin—two substances used to start fires—left stains on his cuffs.

I looked at him, the truth sinking in like ice. My heart twisted in pain. I shoved him away with all the strength I had.

“Don’t touch me! You don’t deserve to mention her name! You don’t deserve to be her father!!”

Ethan’s expression twisted into annoyance.

“I don’t deserve it? And you do?” he sneered.

“If it weren’t for me, a cripple like you would still be rotting in a corner! You can’t even stay home and look after your own child. What good are you?”

His voice grew sharper. “Or were you off with some man again?”

He grabbed the bag I had brought with me and began digging through it, like he expected to find evidence of some affair.
