He Marked Another, Then He Came Crawling Back To Me Chapter 1

The pregnancy test was warm in my hand like a secret, two stubborn lines that promised a future I had spent the last hour arranging in my head, a life bound with the Alpha’s mark, mornings filled with the scent of our pup, and a pair of Thornclaw Pack mansion keys pressed into my palm like the final piece of a bond I had been building with Alex, my fated mate and Alpha.

I had practiced the surprise on the drive, the laugh I would give when he saw the lines, the way his wolf would surge forward, claiming me again as his Luna, his fingers closing over mine as he swore our love was enough. I rehearsed it until the moment felt written in the stars.

I almost knocked…

Then I froze at the door.

Voices spilled out, low and dangerous as wolvesongs. Alpha Alex’s voice was measured and cold. Another voice , Gideon, his beta’s voice sounded like a serrated knife.

“Sofia doesn’t need to know, Gideon,” Alex said. “It’s in the past. It’s done.”

My hand tightened on the handle until the metal bit my skin. My pulse thudded against my throat, the wolf in me already awake and tasting iron in the air. My senses, those gifts I’d learned to keep folded like talons, flared: the faint dampness of the carpet, the citrus of his cologne, the sour tang of fear on Gideon’s breath.

“You used her mother’s blood to save Ashley’s sister,” Gideon said, each word a stone. “You lied to Sofia, and her mother died because of it. What do you think she’ll do if she finds out?”

The room spun. Ashley. The name hit with the weight of a moonstone, a history I’d never been allowed into, a thing between them older than vows. Ashley, first love, long-remembered mate, the woman whose face still made the pack shiver when Alex’s name was in the wind. Ashley, the woman, my mate, Tobias left me for, the one who’d taken parts of me before I even knew what they were.

My throat closed. I pressed myself into the wood of the door and listened like prey.

“I did what I had to do,” Alex said, cold as winter. “Ashley needed me. Her sister needed me. Sofia’s mother was already dying.”

“So you killed her?” Gideon demanded.

“I saved Ashley’s sister,” Alex corrected, with that practiced, clinical cruelty of an alpha choosing who would live. “And I married Sofia. Isn’t that enough?”

“You’ve spent five years lying to her, Alex. Five years pretending to be the perfect husband. Poor girl. She loves you!”

“Sofia means nothing to me,” Alex said flatly. “I’ve paid her back by dedicating my life to her. I’ve done my duty. But if Sofia ever finds out…then so be it.” His voice smoothed into a predator’s whisper. “I’ll remove her from my life if I have to. As long as Ashley is happy, nothing else matters.”

The test slipped from my fingers and clattered to the floor. The plastic skidded and landed facedown, two lines hidden like the truth was hiding from me.

Everything inside me, human and wolf, detonated.

He’d taken my mother. My mother, who’d taught me to track the moon by the way the light cut through the mango leaves, who’d pressed salt into my wounds and told me that pack and family were the same thing. He’d taken her for someone else’s survival and wrapped the gift in gold.

I didn’t feel the ground beneath my feet. I ran. The halls became a blur of moonlight and shadow. Tears burned, but the wolf loved me with sharper senses: scent of his breath still clung to the corridor, the faint iron of secrets. I snatched the keys from my palm and threw them into a trash bin on my way out, the metallic clink like a verdict.

I didn’t stop until I was behind the wheel and the engine trembled. I don’t remember fastening my seatbelt. I don’t remember the impact. The world folded into white pain and then nothing.

When I woke, the antiseptic sting of the infirmary felt like snow on my tongue. My body ached like it had been rewritten in pain. The lights were too bright, the room too small for the tidal wave of fury and grief building inside me.

He was there.

“Sofia,” Alpha Alex breathed, his voice shredded. He sat at my bedside, fingers gripping mine like a chain. His eyes were red, too human, rimmed with the performance of a husband who had just lost his world. “What happened? Why were you driving like that? You could’ve died.”

I watched him play the part of the broken husband, the actor pulling a shroud over the body of truth. He pressed kisses to my hand and forehead, tears making little dark crescents down his face. He smelled of cedar and smoke and the faint copper of old lies. He held me like I was fragile, like I was the moon he’d vow to protect.

I let him. I smiled my practised, porcelain smile and said the words he expected. “I’m fine.”

He relaxed into relief like a wolf settling back into its den. He whispered promises, future, protection, love, words as soft and empty as down feathers. He believed in the story he helped write.

Inside me, something darker responded.

The blood he’d spilled had planted a seed of rage I could water. The wolf that had been patient, the side of me that had learned to wait and strategize in the quiet, rose up and bared its teeth. The pregnancy pushed at my belly, and with it came a slow, terrible clarity: whatever I carried belonged to him, and to the pack he’d stolen from me. That made it the most dangerous thing he could ever possess.

Alex had taken my mother. He’d taken my trust. He’d offered me love for a lie. I felt the pack’s moonlight threading through my bones, the old huntswoman’s voice like a talon.

You take back what’s yours, or you teach the wolves not to fear you.

So I lay still, letting him think he’d won. I let him cradle me and whisper that he couldn’t lose me. I let him believe the mask had not slipped.

But I tasted the future on my tongue: the unborn pup’s heartbeat a drum, a promise. I felt it shift inside me, small and fierce, and I knew I could turn what they’d given me into a weapon. Blood answers blood. Pack answers to pack. And there are laws older than marriage, the teeth of the world.

When I finally moved, it would not be to plead. It would be to take.

Alex had taken everything from me. I would take everything from him.
