He Hid Our Son for Ratings—So I Took His Prime-Time Throne Chapter 1

Everyone said I was just a desperate intern drowning in debt.

Then Ryan Bennett appeared — the charismatic rising star of network news, my savior.

He privately claimed me as his own, shielding me from the harsh reality of the industry.

I fell completely for him, secretly producing his shows and giving birth to our son.

He spoiled us in the shadows, buying a secluded mansion and promising we were his whole world.

Everything changed on the day of the network's family event.

My five-year-old son excitedly ran toward him in the crowded lobby.

I watched Ryan quickly step back, blocking my son, and deliberately picked up his co-anchor's nephew for the cameras instead.

Later, I went to his dressing room to confront him and accidentally overheard their conversation.

"Your kid almost ruined the shot, Ryan," Tessa's voice echoed behind the door.

"Do you think I don't know that?" Ryan lowered his voice tightly.

"But our PR contract says we are America's sweethearts!"

"That's exactly why I told the boy I'm nothing but his boss!"

***

"Hold still, Leo. Let me fix your collar."

My five-year-old kicked his heels against the baseboard while I straightened his navy bow tie. Beyond the velvet curtain, the lobby of Eastline Network throbbed with camera shutters, shrieking fans, and executives congratulating themselves on another flawless Family Day promotion.

"Will he look at me today?" Leo asked.

I kept my attention on the knot. "He'll be busy, sweetheart."

"Can I call him Dad? Just once?"

The question landed exactly where it always did.

"Not in the building. You remember our rule."

Leo's shoulders folded inward. "Mr. Bennett at work. Dad at home."

Except Ryan had barely been home in months.

I smoothed Leo's dark hair and forced a smile. "You're my best secret agent."

Ten feet away, Ryan Bennett stood beneath the studio lights wearing the smile that had made him America's favorite morning anchor. He signed posters, hugged viewers, and let a photographer catch him kneeling beside a little girl in a glitter crown. Every gesture had been rehearsed during the production meeting I had run at six that morning.

An intern squeezed past me with a clipboard. "You're Claire Adams, right? Ryan's executive producer?"

"That's me."

"He is even more charming in person."

I almost laughed.

Six years earlier, Ryan and I had shared a basement apartment in Queens, one laptop, and a dream. On the night Eastline offered him a national desk, he held both my hands and promised we would tell the world about us after his first ratings cycle.

Then the network paired him with Tessa Miller and discovered audiences loved imagining them together. One cycle became another. Our relationship vanished from public record. When I became pregnant, Ryan refused to sign Leo's birth certificate because, in his words, paperwork leaked.

I stayed anyway. I told myself I was protecting the career we had built together.

The excuses became a private language. When Ryan missed Leo's preschool concert, I said a senator had extended an interview. When he skipped Christmas morning, I said weather had grounded him in Chicago, though I knew he was filming a holiday brunch with Tessa three blocks away. Each lie bought Ryan another day and taught Leo that disappointment was something good children swallowed quietly.

That morning, Leo had asked why every other employee wore a family badge while his read GUEST. I told him the printer had made a mistake. The truth was that Ryan had personally removed our names from the staff list before publicity arrived. I had watched him do it on the shared schedule and still packed Leo's nicest shirt.

"Mommy, look." Leo pressed a blue sheet of construction paper against my chest. He had drawn a crooked microphone surrounded by gold stars. At the bottom, in careful block letters, he had written FOR DAD.

"It's beautiful."

"I'm giving it to him."

Before I could stop him, Leo slipped beneath the curtain.

The hallway had just filled with senior executives and entertainment reporters. Leo darted straight toward the brightest part of it.

"Mr. Bennett!"

Ryan turned. For one second, recognition softened his face.

Then he saw the cameras.

He stepped back so quickly his heel struck a lighting case. "Whose child is this?"

Leo's smile disappeared.

A photographer lowered his camera. "He came from backstage."

"He must be lost," Ryan said, glancing toward Eastline's president. "Someone call security."

Tessa swept into the gap in a red dress, towing her eight-year-old nephew, Toby. "There you are, Ryan. Toby has been waiting all morning to see his favorite uncle."

Ryan scooped Toby into his arms without hesitation. The executives laughed. Cameras flashed. Toby sat on Ryan's shoulders while Leo stood three feet away gripping his drawing until the paper buckled.

I crossed the hallway and took my son's hand.

Tessa's eyes flicked over us. "Careful, Claire. Family Day is crowded."

"I noticed."

Ryan handed Toby back, then caught my elbow and steered me behind a set wall.

"Keep Leo in your office," he whispered.

"He wanted to give you a picture."

"Reporters are everywhere."

"He is your son, not a scandal."

Ryan checked the hallway again. "Today, he is a liability. We have a sponsor renewal riding on the family-friendly branding."

The words should have shocked me. Instead, they settled into a place already hollowed out by years of excuses.

"Your family-friendly branding," I repeated.

"Don't start. We agreed to this."

"We agreed to wait three months. Leo is five."

"And the show has never been bigger." Ryan lowered his voice further. "Do not sabotage everything because you're emotional."

He walked back into the light before I could answer.

In my office, Leo sat on the leather sofa without turning on the tablet I gave him. The blue drawing lay facedown beside his knee.

Tessa entered without knocking and tossed a charcoal blazer across my desk. Jasmine perfume flooded the room.

"Ryan needs this pressed for the sponsor shoot."

"I'm the executive producer, not wardrobe."

"You manage his image." She glanced at Leo. "Apparently you manage other complications too."

I rose slowly. "Leave."

Her smile sharpened. "Cute boy. Shame his father couldn't make Family Day."

Leo heard every word.

Tessa left the blazer and strolled out.

"Did Mr. Bennett hate my picture?" Leo asked.

I crouched in front of him. "No."

"He didn't even look."

There was no kind lie left that would not teach my son to accept cruelty.

"You're right," I said. "He should have."

I walked into the break room and shut the door. My hands shook as I opened the email that had been sitting unread for forty-eight hours.

CASCADE EVENING NEWS - CHIEF PRODUCER OFFER.

The Seattle station was smaller than Eastline, but the contract doubled my salary, included relocation, and guaranteed editorial control. I had spent two days telling myself it was impossible. Ryan needed me. Leo's school was here. Our entire life was here.

Through the glass wall, I saw Ryan pose with Toby again while my son waited alone in my office.

I pressed Accept.

A confirmation window appeared.

START DATE: MONDAY.

I typed two words into the response field.

I'm coming.
