On our seventh anniversary, Nathan slid a redesigned wedding ring onto my finger and told me, “Tonight, we start over.”

I believed him long enough to arrive early at the private restaurant he booked for us.

A waiter removed my place card before I could sit down.

The new card said Sienna Hale.

Then our family chat filled with photos from a yacht.

Nathan was there with Sienna, his mother, my best friend, and the daughter I had raised since she was two.

In one selfie, Sienna was wrapped in the white shawl my mother left me before she died.

Nathan answered my call with one sentence: “She was cold.”

When I reminded him it belonged to my mother, he said I was making the day difficult.

My daughter told me Sienna understood Dad's work better anyway.

I sat alone beside our untouched anniversary cake until a man pulled out the chair across from me.

Evan - Nathan's estranged brother, the man I had spent years believing was the villain.

“Are you still a divorce lawyer?” I asked.

He looked at my new ring. “Only if you're ready to leave him.”

I slid the ring across the table. “I am.”

Adrian shoved Bella's battered suitcase across the guest-room threshold as if the decision had already been made.

"How long is she staying?" I asked. The charity gala seating chart was still clipped beneath my arm. We were three hours from doors opening, and I had fifty donors waiting on final confirmations.

"A few weeks. Maybe less." He unzipped the suitcase without looking at me. "Her anxiety is bad again. You know how to make the house comfortable."

Bella Shaw. Adrian's first serious girlfriend. The woman who had taken the public blame for a reckless party when they were nineteen so the club would not cut him from its development program.

I had never denied that she helped save his career. I just did not understand why Adrian kept repaying that debt with pieces of my life.

"The house is comfortable," I said. "And I am not your guest-services manager."

Bella stepped around me with a pharmacy bag clutched to her chest. Orange prescription bottles rattled as she emptied them into the nightstand drawer.

Adrian finally glanced up. "Can you change tomorrow's breakfast order? No dairy for Bella. No gluten. Soft-boiled eggs."

"We employ a chef. Tell him yourself."

His mouth tightened. "Nora, please. Just help me with this one thing."

One thing.

Last month, Bella had needed my driver because crowded ride-share cars made her panic. Last week, Adrian had canceled our anniversary reservation because she could not be alone after a bad night. Now she had a key to our guest suite and a list of instructions for my staff.

Before I could answer, the doorbell rang downstairs.

The boutique stylist had arrived with three garment bags for the gala. I went down to inspect them and unzipped the first one.

Silver-blue silk spilled into view. The high pearl collar and fitted waist had been made to my measurements. I had chosen it because the dress looked elegant without competing with the club's sponsor wall.

Bella stopped on the last stair.

"That collar is beautiful," she said softly. Her fingers tightened around the banister. "It covers the neck. Camera flashes are easier when I don't feel exposed."

I zipped the garment bag closed.

"It is my dress."

"I wasn't asking to take it." Her eyes dropped. "My stylist canceled. I just meant I would feel safer in something like that."

"Then wear the backup gown."

Her breathing changed almost instantly.

Bella backed into the wall, one hand flattening over her chest. "I can't breathe."

Adrian came down the stairs at a run. He wrapped an arm around her shoulders, spoke quietly into her hair, then looked at me as if I had caused the attack on purpose.

He caught my elbow and pulled me into the dining room.

"Could you not do this today?" he hissed. "She took weeks of abuse from the press for me. She nearly destroyed her own reputation so I could keep my contract."

I pulled my arm free.

"Then buy her a dress."

"The gala starts in three hours."

"Not my problem."

His stare hardened. "It is one gown."

"It is never one thing, Adrian." I counted them off on my fingers. "My driver. Our anniversary dinner. A room in our house. Now my clothes. Every debt you owe Bella gets collected from me."

"She is having a panic attack."

"And I am your wife."

For one second, I thought that might reach him.

Then he said, "Be the bigger person."

I laughed once, without humor. "No."

I went upstairs and shut myself in the master bedroom.

Ten minutes later, I opened my walk-in closet.

The silver-blue garment bag was gone.

Only an empty wooden hanger swayed from the brass rod.

I stood there until the last trace of surprise disappeared. Then I pulled a black sheath dress from the back of the closet and changed without calling downstairs.

On my way out, I stopped beside our wedding photograph. Adrian was smiling beneath a white floral arch, lifting my left hand toward the camera.

The platinum band on my finger had belonged to his grandmother. The inside was engraved A & N.

This will only ever belong to my wife, he had promised when he slid it onto my hand.

Footsteps sounded below.

Bella descended the staircase wearing my gown.

The silk hung a little loose on her, but the pearl collar framed her face exactly as she wanted. For half a second, before she noticed me watching, satisfaction flickered across her expression.

Adrian stood at the bottom of the stairs. He picked up a white shawl and settled it over her shoulders.

Then he looked at my black dress.

"Do not give her attitude tonight," he said. "She is already barely holding it together."

"She is wearing my clothes."

"It is fabric, Nora."

"If reporters cornered me tonight, would you ask Bella to strip off her dress and hand it to me?"

He answered too quickly.

"You do not panic. You are the stable one."

There it was.

My strength had become permission to hurt me.

I walked past them toward the front door. "The car is waiting."

Bella checked her phone before we reached the SUV. The blood drained from her face.

"They're already at the club," she whispered. "The reporters are lining the carpet. They'll ask about the old scandal."

She grabbed Adrian's sleeve.

"I can't go in there like this."

"Look at me." Adrian covered her hand with his. "You are safe."

"I need something that tells them I belong there. Something that says the Vale family is protecting me."

His gaze moved across the foyer.

Then it stopped on my left hand.

I felt the shift before he spoke.

"Nora," Adrian said carefully. "Let her wear the ring for the carpet. Just for tonight."

I put my hand behind my back.

"No."

"It would stop people from treating her like an outsider."

"It is my wedding ring."

"I know what it is."

He stepped closer and held out his hand.

"Then you know exactly what you are asking me to give away."
