He Faked His Poverty to Marry Me, Then Stole Everything Chapter 1

I was smoothing the last layer of buttercream over our anniversary cake when Noah's phone lit up beside my elbow.

He'd left it on the counter next to the glass box I'd bought that afternoon. The cheap silver necklace lay coiled beside it, waiting to be put back where it belonged tonight. Three years ago, Noah had fastened it around my neck in his grease-stained garage uniform and told me he'd worked three months of overtime to afford it.

That necklace was the reason I'd walked out of every setup my family arranged. It was the reason I'd told Dad's old advisor to stop running background checks on the man I loved.

The screen stayed bright.

*Reed transfer cleared. Zurich seats held for Friday. Don't get sentimental.*

No name. No contact photo.

I didn't touch the phone. I looked at the two words that mattered, *Reed transfer* and *Zurich*, and then at the folder under my left hand. It held the expansion authorization I'd planned to sign over to Noah tonight, my father's old Reed Medical seal printed in the top right corner.

I set the frosting knife down, picked up my own phone, and photographed the lock screen.

The front door opened a minute later. Noah came into the kitchen loosening his tie, smiling the way he always did when he knew I'd been cooking for him. When he leaned in to kiss my cheek, I caught the scent on his coat. It wasn't motor oil or the office. It was cedar and amber, the kind of fragrance they pump into airport first-class lounges.

His hand went straight for his phone.

"What's Zurich?" I asked.

He paused for a fraction of a second, then closed his fingers around the phone and flipped it face-down against his palm.

"What exactly is leaving Chicago on Friday, Noah?"

"Nothing's leaving." He laughed, easy and warm. "That's Mara. She's an outside risk consultant we brought on. Zurich is a vendor settlement. Boring stuff, babe."

"A vendor settlement called the Reed transfer?"

"Our company's called Reed Medical. Everything's a Reed transfer."

I wiped my hands on a towel, opened my laptop on the counter, and logged into the company's finance portal. Noah's smile thinned.

"Allie. It's our anniversary."

"Then this'll only take a second."

It took less than that. The top entry was from 2:14 that afternoon. Equipment prepayment: $3,200,000. Recipient: NorthCrest Holdings.

I had never heard of NorthCrest Holdings.

I clicked the approval line. The screen showed two digital signatures, Noah's and mine.

"I didn't approve this."

"You did, technically. You gave me signing authority on vendor prepayments last spring." He came around the counter and pulled the laptop toward him. "This is part of an acquisition structure. You don't understand how fast these deals move."

"Then explain it to me."

"I'm not doing a seminar over cake."

He picked up my father's fountain pen from beside the folder, the black Montblanc Dad had signed every Reed Medical contract with for thirty years, and tapped it against the granite while he talked.

I stopped listening, because my brain had started doing math.

Three months ago, Noah told me our European supplier required us to switch to a new verification system. Two months ago, $480,000 disappeared from our joint account, and he'd called it an emergency deposit. Last month, he started spending every Saturday alone looking at a warehouse property he never seemed to finish looking at.

I'd filed those away as three separate oddities. Seeing them now beside a transfer carrying my signature, they looked like steps in the same process.

"Show me the NorthCrest contract," I said. "Right now."

He set the pen down hard. "Are you serious? I come home and you've turned our anniversary dinner into an emotional interrogation."

"It's three point two million dollars."

"Which I'm handling." His voice dropped, and something in it went flat and unfamiliar. "You gave me the business because you hated dealing with the ugly parts. Don't pretend you understand them now."

I stared at him.

"Stay out of my work, Allison," he said. "I mean it."

He'd never said that to me before. Not once in three years.

Then he kissed my forehead like the argument was settled, carried his leather briefcase into the study, and went upstairs. A moment later, I heard the shower turn on.

I didn't follow him.

I waited until the pipes groaned, then walked into the study. The briefcase sat on his desk. I opened it, ignored the files, and unzipped the inner compartment.

There was no contract inside.

There was a passport with my husband's face on it and a name I'd never seen. Not Noah Cole. *Noah Mercer.* Beneath it sat a small Swiss bank token, its display flashing a six-digit code, and a cheap black phone with no carrier logo.

I pressed the side button. No passcode. The screen opened to a folder he must have been working in before he came home.

The first PDF was titled *TARGET: ALLISON REED.*

My hands went cold.

The file had been created fourteen days before my car broke down on Halsted. Inside was my commute, the coffee shop I went to every morning, my father's diagnosis, and the date my family trust would unlock. Near the bottom of the first page, someone had typed: *Approach point: Halsted garage, stalled vehicle scenario.*

I scrolled to the next page. It was a checklist from Mara.

*1. Delay tow truck dispatch.*

*2. Noah presents as on-site mechanic.*

*3. Refuse her payment. First positive impression.*

I remembered standing in the rain while the tow company kept apologizing. I remembered a man in a blue uniform waving off my credit card and saying, "Keep it. Your day's bad enough."

Behind me, the necklace in my pocket slid against the desk with a small metallic click.

The last attachment was a card statement from a company I didn't recognize, billed to Mara. One line was highlighted. Jewelry counter, Water Tower Place, $46.80, dated the same day Noah had put that chain around my neck and told me, "I would rather work for three months than let your money buy my love."

Three months of overtime had been a forty-seven-dollar receipt.

I sat down in his chair because my knees wouldn't hold me.

"He didn't find me," I whispered. "He selected me."

The shower was still running.

I took out my phone and photographed everything. Every page of the dossier, the passport, the token, the checklist, the receipt, then the NorthCrest entry still open on my laptop. I uploaded it all to my encrypted cloud drive, watched the bar reach a hundred percent, and put every item back exactly where it had been.

Then I walked into the closet.

The wedding ring came off harder than I expected, like it had grown into me. I dropped it into the small fireproof box my father left me, locked it, and took the backup phone from the top shelf.

Helen Shaw picked up on the second ring. She'd been my family's attorney since before I could walk.

"Allison? It's almost ten."

"I need you to listen and not ask why yet." I kept my voice low. "Freeze everything with my name on it before he learns I know."

There was a pause. "Noah?"

"Revoke his signing authority at Reed Medical tonight. Stop any new debt that uses me as a personal guarantor. And get an independent forensic accountant into the company before morning."

I heard her keyboard. "Some offshore transfers have already gone through. I can see two."

"And the rest?"

"There are still accounts we can stop. If we move now."

"Then move."

I hung up as the bathroom door opened. Steam rolled out, and Noah stepped into the bedroom rubbing a towel through his wet hair, smiling again like the kitchen had never happened.

His eyes dropped to my left hand.

For half a second, the towel stopped moving.

I walked past him without a word and went downstairs. The cake had slumped in the warm kitchen, buttercream sliding off one side. I picked up the plate, carried it to the trash, and tipped the whole thing in.

Noah followed me down. "Allie, what are you doing?"

I picked up the expansion authorization, my father's seal still crisp in the corner, and tore it cleanly in half.

"Seriously?" He gave a short, tired laugh. "Are you throwing a tantrum again?"

I dropped the halves on top of the ruined cake and closed the lid.

I didn't explain. I didn't owe him that anymore.

He thought this was the night I'd stop loving him.

It wasn't. It was the night every dollar he tried to move next would have to get past me first.
