He Divorced Me. I Divorced Him from His Company. Chapter 1

Everyone told me I was lucky to marry a self-made CEO.

For eight years, I stood in the shadows, washing his clothes while he built his empire.

I pawned my grandmother's diamonds just to fund his first project.

His mother was the only one who saw my sacrifices.

Yesterday was our eighth anniversary.

I bought his favorite wine and waited until midnight.

When the door opened, Tom didn't walk in alone.

His beautiful young secretary was wearing his jacket.

He threw divorce papers on the table and told me to leave without a dime.

He said I was just a boring housewife who contributed nothing to his success.

I looked at the papers, then slowly pulled out my phone.

I didn't cry, and I didn't beg.

I just forwarded a single document to his board of directors.

"He thinks he built this company," I smiled as his phone started ringing frantically.

"But he forgot whose name is really on the deed."

***

"Are you seriously still awake?"

Tom's voice cut through the two-in-the-morning silence just as I scraped a cold ribeye into the trash. The steak landed with a heavy slap against the plastic liner, followed by roasted potatoes, glazed carrots, and the chocolate tart I had spent all afternoon making.

Eight years of marriage. Three hours of cooking. One untouched anniversary dinner.

I washed my hands before I turned around. If I looked at the clock again, I might do something humiliating, like ask why he had ignored twelve calls.

Tom stood in the entryway with rain shining on the shoulders of his charcoal suit. Beside him was a blonde woman in a red dress, wrapped in his jacket as if she had every right to wear it. Her lipstick was smudged. So was his collar.

She wrinkled her nose. "God, this place smells like old grease."

Then she walked past me without waiting to be invited.

Her heels clicked over the hardwood I had chosen, across the rug I had paid to restore, toward the living room where our wedding portrait still hung above the fireplace. She glanced at the cream sofa and made a face.

"And that thing belongs in a landfill. How do you live like this, Tommy?"

Tommy.

No one called my husband that. Not his mother. Not his oldest friends. Certainly not the employees who stood when he entered a room.

I looked at his bare left hand. The platinum wedding band he wore every day was gone.

"Who is she?" I asked.

Tom exhaled as though I were the inconvenience. He kicked off his shoes and loosened his tie. "This is Chloe Bennett. She works with me."

"I used to work with you," Chloe corrected, smiling. "Now I am part of his personal life."

The answer was so shameless that for one second I wondered whether I had misunderstood it. Then she reached back and threaded her fingers through Tom's.

I waited for him to pull away.

He did not.

Eight years earlier, Tom had been an ambitious product designer with a prototype, a rented desk, and forty-three dollars in his checking account. I had sold my grandmother's diamond necklace and transferred five hundred thousand dollars from a trust he never knew existed. I told him the money came from an anonymous angel investor because he had once said he could never marry a woman whose family owned more than he did.

I had mistaken insecurity for pride. I had mistaken gratitude for love.

Tom crossed the room and dropped a thick stack of papers onto the glass coffee table. The top page slid sideways beneath the chandelier.

PETITION FOR DIVORCE.

"Sign the acknowledgment tonight," he said. "My attorney will file in the morning."

I stared at the document. "On our anniversary?"

"Do not make this theatrical, Sarah. The marriage has been dead for years."

"It was alive enough for you to let me host investors, fix your books, and mortgage this house when your first warehouse flooded."

Chloe laughed under her breath. "Fix his books? You order groceries and rearrange pillows."

Tom did not defend me. He reached for the whiskey decanter instead.

"You are a boring housewife," he said, pouring three fingers into a crystal tumbler. "You have no ambition, no social presence, and no idea what it takes to stand beside a man at my level. Chloe understands the company. She understands me."

I glanced at her. She was wearing a limited-edition watch purchased on a corporate card I still monitored through the legacy accounting portal. I recognized the charge: forty-eight thousand dollars, coded as client entertainment.

"Does she understand that the watch on her wrist belongs to Miller Dynamics?" I asked.

Chloe's smile tightened.

Tom took a long drink. "Do not start inventorying gifts. The settlement is generous."

I turned the first few pages. He proposed that I leave the house within seventy-two hours, waive spousal support, release all claims to the company, and accept a ten-year-old Honda that had not run since January. In exchange, he would assume the mortgage on a property already titled in my name.

Generous.

"You want me to walk away with nothing," I said.

"You contributed nothing."

The words should have hurt. Instead, they clarified everything.

I remembered the nights I had built cash-flow forecasts while he slept. The introductions my trustee had arranged. The emergency guarantees my family office had quietly extended so suppliers would keep shipping. Tom had stood on every platform I built for him and convinced himself he had learned to fly.

"Do not worry," Chloe said, perching on the arm of the sofa. "I will take good care of the place."

She reached for our wedding portrait, lifted it off its hook, and let it fall face-first onto the hearth. The glass cracked across my smiling face.

Tom watched it happen.

That was the moment the marriage ended for me. Not the red dress. Not the missing ring. Not even the divorce petition.

It was his silence.

I set the papers down with deliberate care. "I will have my attorney review this."

"You do not have an attorney," Tom said.

"Then I will find one."

His expression hardened. "I want this finished quickly. The board banquet is tomorrow night, and I will not have you creating a scandal."

"You brought your mistress into our home on our anniversary. The scandal has already arrived."

Chloe slid off the sofa. "Watch how you speak to me."

I met her gaze. "You are standing in my house wearing my husband's jacket and a watch bought with company money. I am speaking to you with remarkable restraint."

Tom slammed his glass onto the table. Whiskey jumped over the rim. "Enough. Take the guest room tonight. Chloe is staying in the master bedroom."

For the first time, anger flashed hot enough to blur my vision. I pressed my thumbnail into my palm until the room sharpened again.

"Fine," I said.

Tom blinked. He had expected tears, bargaining, perhaps a scene he could use to prove I was unstable. My calm unsettled him more than shouting would have.

I carried the divorce papers into the study and locked the door. Then I opened the safe behind the framed landscape print. Inside were my passport, the Ashford family signet ring, and a slim encrypted phone I had not switched on in three years.

The screen lit immediately.

One unread message waited from Mark Whitmore, trustee of the Ashford family trust and the only person who had warned me not to marry Tom.

I opened it.

Saw the corporate transfer alerts. Say the word, and I revoke his proxy before sunrise.

I looked toward the hallway, where Chloe's laughter drifted through my home.

My reply contained only three words.

Do it now.
