My Groom Stole Millions to Give His Mistress a Dream Wedding Chapter 1

The morning light streamed through our penthouse windows, casting golden patterns across the marble floor. I stood before the full-length mirror, smoothing down the cream silk blouse I'd selected for today. Six years. Six years of building a life with Conner, and finally, we were getting our marriage license.

"Perfect," I whispered to my reflection, fastening the pearl earrings Conner had given me on our fifth anniversary. Today was supposed to be the beginning of our forever.

I glanced at my watch—9:15 AM. Conner had promised to be ready by now. Strange. He'd been talking about this day for weeks, planning every detail.

"Conner?" I called out, my voice echoing through our spacious penthouse. No answer.

I found his note on the kitchen counter, held down by his coffee mug. His handwriting was hurried, almost illegible:

*Lili, urgent business meeting came up. Can't miss it. Meet you at the City Clerk's office at noon. Love you. -C*

I stared at the note, a knot forming in my stomach. No phone call. No text. Just a hastily scrawled excuse.

"He better have a good reason," I muttered, folding the note carefully. Conner knew how important today was.

Two hours later, I sat alone at Café Laurent, sipping a cooling latte and watching the door. The City Clerk's office was just across the street. Conner was now officially late.

My phone buzzed with a notification. Then another. And another.

"What's going on?" I murmured, unlocking my screen.

Instagram notifications flooded in. My feed was blowing up with a hashtag: #ConnerAndJazlynSayIDo.

My finger froze above the screen. Jazlyn? Conner's college friend? The tomboyish girl who was always "just a friend"?

With trembling fingers, I clicked the hashtag.

A live video appeared, timestamped just an hour ago. The Desert Vibes Music Festival in LA. Thousands of people packed into a dusty arena, the sun beating down on their excited faces.

And there, on a makeshift stage decorated with wildflowers and fairy lights, stood Conner.

My Conner.

He wore the same suit he'd worn to last month's investor dinner, but his hair was disheveled, his tie askew. He swayed slightly, either from the heat or something stronger.

"I've never been surer of anything in my life!" he shouted into a microphone, his voice echoing across the festival grounds.

The camera panned to the woman beside him. Jazlyn. Gone was her usual jeans and t-shirts. She wore a flowing bohemian dress, her hair crowned with flowers.

"Conner and Jazlyn forever!" someone in the crowd screamed.

"Today, in front of all our friends, we're making it official!" Conner announced, pulling Jazlyn close.

My phone slipped from my numb fingers, clattering onto the table. People at nearby tables glanced over, then quickly away.

The video continued playing. The officiant—somehow legally sanctioned for this impromptu ceremony—pronounced them husband and wife.

"I now pronounce you husband and wife! You may kiss the bride!"

Conner cupped Jazlyn's face and kissed her deeply as the crowd erupted in cheers.

My phone buzzed again. Messages from friends, all asking the same question: "Is this some kind of joke?"

Then came the retractions:

"Wait, that's not you?"

"Oh my God, I'm so confused."

"Is this... real?"

I couldn't breathe. Couldn't think. The café blurred around me as my world collapsed into that single video playing on my phone.

Hours later, I sat in darkness. The penthouse was silent except for the occasional ping of my phone as more notifications came in. I'd packed my bags. There was no point staying.

The door clicked open just after midnight.

"Lili?" Conner's voice called out, unsteady. "Why are you sitting in the dark, baby?"

I didn't answer. The smell of alcohol and desert dust wafted from him as he stumbled into the living room.

"Turn on the light," he said, fumbling for the switch.

When the light flooded the room, he froze. His eyes widened at the sight of my packed bags.

"What's going on?" he asked, though I could see the guilt in his eyes.

I held up my phone, the video still paused on their kiss.

"Explain this," I said, my voice eerily calm.

Conner's face cycled through emotions—guilt, fear, then a practiced smile.

"Lili, it's not what it looks like," he said, stepping toward me. "It's just a publicity stunt. Non-binding. Just for show."

"Just for show?" My voice cracked slightly.

"For West Enterprises," he continued, words tumbling out faster now. "The stock was down last quarter. This was... it was a marketing thing. For social media."

He reached for my hands, but I pulled away.

"I love you, Lili. Only you. This thing with Jazlyn... it'll be annulled within a week. I swear."

I looked into his eyes—the eyes I'd gazed into for six years—and saw nothing but calculation.

"You expect me to believe that?" I asked quietly.

"Please," he begged. "Don't leave me. I need you."

And there it was—not "I love you" but "I need you." Not for love, but for what I could provide.

I picked up my bags and walked toward the door.

"Lili, wait!" Conner called after me. "Where are you going?"

I paused at the threshold, looking back one last time at the man I'd planned to marry.

"To the only place I should have been all along," I replied. "Away from you."
