I stood in the Silver Moon Pack's parking lot, feeling like an intruder despite the invitation clutched tightly in my hand. The grand pack house loomed before me, its familiar façade both beautiful and menacing in the fading afternoon light. Five years had passed since I'd last set foot on these grounds, yet the knot in my stomach felt just as tight as the day I'd left.

'We can do this,' my wolf, Lyra, whispered in my mind. 'We're not who we once were.'

I smoothed down my simple grey dress, deliberately chosen for its modesty. Alexander had insisted on accompanying me, but I'd convinced him to arrive separately. This was something I needed to face first on my own terms, without the immediate shield of his royal status.

'You're a queen now,' I reminded myself, touching the mating mark on my neck hidden beneath my high collar. 'His queen.'

The rumble of an approaching engine drew my attention. A gleaming black SUV rounded the corner, slowing as it approached the puddle beside me. I recognized the driver instantly – Ryan Matthews, my former mate, his handsome face set in the same arrogant expression I remembered. Our eyes met for a brief, electric moment.

Recognition flickered across his features, followed by something darker. The SUV accelerated slightly, deliberately cutting through the muddy puddle. Dirty water sprayed across my dress, soaking the fabric and splattering my legs.

Lyra growled fiercely within me. 'Let me out! Let me show him who we are now!'

I calmed her with practiced ease, even as my heart hammered against my ribs. 'Not yet. Not like this.'

Ryan stepped out of his vehicle, designer shoes crunching on the gravel as he approached. His Alpha aura pushed against me, testing, probing for submission. I kept my own power carefully contained, a secret waiting to be revealed.

'Look at you,' he said, his voice carrying that commanding Alpha tone that once made me tremble. 'Nothing but a ragged rogue.'

I remained silent, studying the man who had once been my everything. Five years had hardened his features, but not in ways that spoke of wisdom or growth. This was the hardness of pride calcified into arrogance.

'Still as pathetic as the day you left,' he continued, circling me like I was prey. 'I heard you've been living as a rogue all this time. How sad.'

The passenger door swung open, and Ashley Coleman emerged, her blonde hair perfectly styled, expensive clothes clinging to her curvaceous figure. The family heirloom earrings I'd heard so much about dangled from her ears, catching the light with every movement of her head.

'Ryan, darling, don't waste your time,' she said, her voice dripping with false sweetness that quickly turned to venom as she addressed me. 'The pack doesn't need strays contaminating our celebration.'

She reached into her designer purse, pulling out several bills. With theatrical disdain, she flicked them at my feet, where they landed in the same muddy puddle that had soaked my dress.

'Here's some coin for the beggar's woes,' she announced loudly, her voice carrying across the parking lot. 'Perhaps you can buy yourself something more... appropriate.'

Around us, pack members who had been making their way toward the pack house paused, their curious gazes landing on the unfolding drama. Some whispered behind their hands, others openly stared. I recognized faces from my past – wolves who had once greeted me with respect when I was Ryan's mate, now looking at me with a mixture of pity and contempt.

I could feel Lyra's rage building inside me, matching my own growing anger. But beneath it all was something else – a cold certainty. These people had no idea who they were truly dealing with. They saw only what they expected to see: a rejected, broken she-wolf who had fallen from grace.

Little did they know that the Moon Goddess had blessed me with a fate far greater than anything the Silver Moon Pack could offer. As Ashley's cruel laughter echoed in the parking lot and Ryan's smirk widened, I thought of Alexander – my true mate, my king – and the sweet justice that would soon unfold.

The cash at my feet fluttered in the breeze, but I made no move to pick it up. Some things were beneath even a beggar's dignity. And I was no beggar – I was a queen in waiting.
