From a poor girl to a wealthy heiress, I became the center Chapter 1

"We’re closed," I said, wiping espresso grounds off the stainless steel counter.

It was five minutes past midnight. My nineteenth birthday. A three-dollar slice of grocery store cake sat in a plastic container beside the register, waiting for my shift to end.

"Vivian?"

The voice belonged to a woman standing by the glass door. She wore a tailored camel coat that screamed money. Beside her stood a tall man with silver hair and a rigid jaw.

"Store's shut down," I said. "Register is locked."

"We aren't customers," the man said. He pulled a thick manila folder from his leather briefcase and laid it flat against the sticky counter. "My name is Richard Sterling. This is my wife, Eleanor."

"Congratulations," I answered dryly. "Do you want coffee or directions?"

"We want you," Eleanor whispered. Her hand shook as she reached across the counter, stopping inches from my wrist. "Look at the files, Vivian. Please."

I frowned, peeling back the folder's flap.

Medical records. Birth certificates with gold state seals. And clipped on top, a certified DNA profile from a private lab in Boston.

*Probability of maternity: 99.98%. Probability of paternity: 99.98%.*

"Your adoptive parents lied to you," Richard said, his tone clipped, like he was negotiating a merger. "You were stolen from St. John’s Hospital nineteen years ago. We’ve spent millions tracking you down. You are our daughter."

I stared at the numbers on the paper. My fingers pressed into the counter until my nails turned white.

"I have five hours left on my shift," I muttered.

"Leave the apron," Richard ordered. "You're never working behind a counter again."

By dawn, a private car carried me through the wrought-iron gates of a massive estate in Los Angeles. The Sterling mansion rose like a white fortress against the sunrise.

The front doors swung open before we even stepped out of the vehicle.

A girl stood at the top of the marble steps. She had golden hair styled to perfection and wore a cream silk dress.

"Mom! Dad!" she called out, running down the steps to wrap her arms around Eleanor's neck.

Eleanor patted her back gently. "Victoria, sweetheart. She’s here."

Victoria pulled back. Her blue eyes fixed on me, sweeping over my faded thrift-store jeans and scuffed sneakers. A glossy, practiced smile stretched across her face.

"So this is Vivian," Victoria said, stepping closer. "Welcome home, sister. God, it must have been horrific growing up in those dingy foster rooms."

"I survived," I said.

Victoria touched the heavy diamond choker resting against her collarbone. "Dad bought me this when I turned eighteen. Right before we took the Gulfstream to Milan for fashion week. It’s hard to imagine nineteen years apart. Mom always says blood doesn't make a daughter. Presence does. Memories do."

She tilted her head, watching me like a hawk waiting for a flinch.

"You must feel so out of place here," Victoria added, lowering her voice. "Like a stray walking into a palace."

I met her stare without blinking.

"If this is really my home," I said, "I don't need anyone's permission to stay."

Victoria's smile froze. Her jaw clenched tight, the warmth draining entirely from her eyes.

"We'll see how long you last," she whispered.

Three days later, I was enrolled at the private university on the coast. Tuition cost more than my foster parents made in five years.

"Take these room keys up to suite 402," Eleanor had told me that morning, handing me a brass ring. "Victoria left her spare tablet there. Be a darling and bring it to her before her seminar."

I took the elevator to the fourth floor of the luxury campus hotel.

The door to suite 402 stood slightly ajar.

Low moans echoed down the hallway.

"Harder, Ethan. Right there, fuck—"

I pushed the door open an inch, intending to call her name, but the words died in my throat.

Victoria was bent over the dark mahogany desk near the window, her skirt pushed up around her hips. A guy with dark, messy hair and broad shoulders stood behind her, his jeans dropped to his knees. His hands dug into her bare ass, slapping his pelvis against her violently.

"You like that, Victoria?" he grunted, his voice ragged. "Fuck, you're so wet."

"Ethan, faster," she gasped, her knuckles white against the desk. "Fuck me harder, come on!"

He drove into her with a harsh, rhythmic slap of skin, sweating, his jaw tight as he fucked her deep.

I stood frozen in the doorway.

Ethan Cole. The golden boy of the university soccer team. Victoria's picture-perfect boyfriend, plastered all over her social media.

Then, a screen lit up on the side table right beside me.

Victoria’s phone.

A notification buzzed across the glass:

*From: Damon*

*Can’t wait to taste you tonight, baby. Tell Ethan you’re studying at the library.*

A floorboard creaked beneath my sneaker.

Ethan stiffened. He pulled out of Victoria abruptly, cursing under his breath as he yanked his jeans up over his hips. "What the fuck?"

Victoria spun around, breathing heavily, her face flushed red and her blouse completely undone. Her eyes locked onto mine.

Shock flickered across her face for half a second. Then it vanished, replaced by venom.

"Get out, Ethan," Victoria commanded, straightening her skirt.

"Who is that?" Ethan asked, glaring at me.

"I said get the fuck out!" she snapped.

Ethan grabbed his jacket from the floor and shoved past me into the corridor, slamming his shoulder against the doorframe on his way out.

The suite went dead silent.

Victoria smoothed down her silk blouse, her fingers trembling with fury. She walked straight toward me, stopping inches away.

"You think you’re smart snooping around?" she hissed.

"Mom told me to bring you your tablet," I said evenly. "And your phone just buzzed. Damon says hi."

Her face went pale, then violently red. She grabbed my wrist, digging her manicured nails deep into my skin.

"You listen to me, you gutter rat," Victoria whispered through clenched teeth. "You didn't see anything. You tell anyone—you tell Dad, or Ethan, or anyone on this campus—and I will ruin you. You'll be back in that roach-infested apartment before the semester ends."

"Let go of my arm," I said, my voice steady.

"You better forget everything you saw today," she snarled. "Or I swear to God—"

"Room service, or did I miss the party?"

A deep, drawling voice cut through the tension.

I turned around.

Standing in the open doorway was a guy leaning against the jamb. He wore a heavy black athletic jacket with an ice hockey crest across the chest. His dark eyes moved from Victoria’s disheveled hair down to my wrist, which Victoria still held in a vise grip.

Jason King. Captain of the university hockey team. The one person nobody on this campus dared to cross.

He pushed off the wall and stepped inside, his gaze locked directly on mine.

"Looks like I got here right on time," Jason said.
