Five Years of Lies: My Brother Stole My Wife Chapter 1

After my younger brother drove drunk and killed my three-year-old son and crippled my left leg, my parents put him behind bars with their own hands.

Rita Henson stood at my hospital bed and swore, "The man who killed our son—I'll never forgive him."

I believed it. I thought they truly ached for me.

Until Barret James finished his sentence, and my mother begged me to come to his welcome-home dinner.

When I refused, she lost her temper with me for the first time.

"All you lost was one child and one working leg. Barret sat in prison for five years."

"He's gone five years without his family caring about him. Can't you stop being so petty?"

Rita talked me around too. "The past is the past. It's time to let it go."

I thought about it all night. In the end I decided to forgive Barret James.

The next day I picked up a gift and hurried to the restaurant.

But when I pushed open the door of the private room, I saw a four-year-old boy sitting in Rita's lap, calling her Mommy and calling Barret James Daddy.

On the screen, Rita cradled him as a newborn while my parents laughed and fastened a lucky pendant around his neck.

And the child's name was the name of my son, the one who died in the crash.

So Barret James had never gone to prison at all.

For five years he had been abroad, raising his child with Rita Henson.

Only I had dragged my ruined leg from room to room, keeping my son's nursery, hurting for five years.

I didn't go in.

I only asked my lawyer to draw up the divorce papers, bought a ticket for that same day, and flew abroad.

They had been one family all along.

So it was time for me to go too.

Through the gap in the door I saw Rita holding Elmer James in the seat of honor.

Barret James sat close beside her.

My parents sat on either side, busy unwrapping the child's gifts.

The photographer lifted his camera and called out with a smile,

"Come on, all five of you, squeeze in a little closer."

When Barret James leaned down toward the boy, Rita slipped her hand through his arm without thinking.

The five of them looked into the lens.

The motion so practiced, as if they had taken family portraits like this a hundred times over.

In the instant the shutter flashed, I caught myself in the reflection off the glass.

Face bloodless, left leg bent at that wrong angle.

Hiding in a dark corner, watching them gathered together and happy under the lights.

Like some dark rat down in a sewer, spying on other people's happiness.

The lights in the room dimmed.

A photo of Elmer as a newborn came up on the screen.

Beneath the photo was a date.

I stared at that string of numbers, and my left leg suddenly throbbed hard.

That day was the day of my third leg surgery.

The crash had shattered my knee, and it had taken from me any chance of ever being a father again.

The first two surgeries hadn't gone well.

Before the third, the doctor told me that if this one failed too, I might not even be able to walk on my own again.

The nurse held the consent form and asked me, "Where's your family?"

I called Rita more than a dozen times.

No one picked up.

My mother said Barret James had suddenly fallen ill in prison, and that she and my father were rushing over.

The surgery couldn't wait any longer.

In the end, on the line for the family member's signature, I wrote my own name in a crooked, unsteady hand.

The nurse looked at me, her eyes full of pity.

"Going through an operation this big all alone—aren't you scared?"

Of course I was scared.

Scared I'd never stand again.

Scared that when I woke, there would still be no one beside me.

But I still made excuses for them.

"My brother had an emergency in prison."

"They didn't stay away on purpose."

So on that day, Barret James had never been in prison at all.

Rita was abroad, giving birth to Barret James's child.

And the people who claimed they couldn't get away—every one of them had been standing at her bedside.
