My Fiancé Kissed His Assistant, So I Took His Rival’s Offer at Midnight Chapter 1

Halfway through my engagement party, my fiancé disappeared.

Two hundred guests were drinking champagne in the Larkspur Hotel ballroom, and nearly every one of them had asked me where Graham was. His mother asked twice. The photographer asked three times, because the cake cutting was scheduled for nine and it was already ten past.

"He's probably on a call," I kept saying, smiling the way I'd been smiling all night.

Graham Whitmore was always on a call. That came with being the heir to the Whitmore Group, and I'd known it when I said yes.

So I went to find him.

The private lounge sat behind the ballroom, down a carpeted hallway the staff used to bring out the dessert trays. The door was open a few inches. I heard Graham's voice first, low and warm, the voice he used when he was trying to talk me out of a bad mood.

Then I heard a woman laugh.

I knew that laugh. Natalie Price had been Graham's personal assistant for a year and a half. She'd booked our cake tasting. She'd picked up my dress from the tailor when I was stuck in a client meeting.

Through the gap in the door, I saw her hand resting flat on Graham's chest, right over the pocket square I'd picked out for him that morning.

She tipped her face up.

He didn't step back. He lowered his head and kissed her, one hand sliding to her waist like it already knew where to go.

On the table beside them sat the framed engagement photo we'd taken that afternoon. Me laughing at something he'd said. His arm around my shoulders. The photographer had printed it for the welcome display, and someone had carried it back here and set it down next to a half-empty bottle of Krug.

Graham saw me first.

He let go of Natalie so fast she stumbled.

"Evelyn."

Natalie spun around, her face going white. "Ms. Shaw, it's not what it…"

I didn't wait to hear what it wasn't.

I turned and walked back down the hallway. Graham called my name again, sharper this time. I didn't answer, and I didn't go back to the ballroom either. I wasn't going to stand under those chandeliers while two hundred people watched me figure out how to breathe.

I took the service elevator to the fourth floor.

The indoor pool closed at nine. A small sign on the glass door said so, but the door wasn't locked, and nobody was there to stop me. The lights under the water were still on, turning the whole room a soft, unreal blue. It smelled like chlorine and cedar. After the noise upstairs, the quiet felt almost loud.

I walked to the edge and pulled off my ring.

Four carats. Platinum. Graham had told me the price once, proudly, like it was a measure of how much he loved me. I'd spent three years building my life around that man. I'd turned down two clients in Europe so I could work on Whitmore projects. I'd rebranded three of his hotels without ever asking for a title.

I held the ring over the water and stood there for a long time.

Behind me, something splashed.

I jerked around. A man was in the far lane, cutting through the water in long, easy strokes. I hadn't even noticed him. He reached the wall, turned, and swam toward me.

When he surfaced at the edge and pushed his dark hair back, I recognized him.

Sebastian Cole. CEO of Cole Hospitality.

For the past two years, every time Graham chased an acquisition, Sebastian's name came up. Graham cursed it over dinner. He'd once thrown his phone across our kitchen because Cole Hospitality had outbid him by two percent.

Sebastian rested his forearms on the tile and looked at the ring in my hand.

"Planning to throw it?"

I didn't answer.

He climbed out of the pool, water running down his shoulders, and took a white robe from the lounger beside him. He tied it at the waist without hurrying. He didn't ask why my mascara was running. He didn't pretend he had no idea whose party was happening two floors up.

"If you came down here to enjoy this," I said, "go ahead. Get it over with."

"I came down here to swim. You walked in on me." He picked up a towel and dried his hands. "But since you're here, I'll be direct. If you're really ending the engagement, hear my offer first."

I laughed. It came out wrong. "You're recruiting me. Tonight. While my future mother-in-law is upstairs looking for me."

"Is she still your future mother-in-law?"

That shut me up.

"I'm bidding on the Marisol Coast portfolio," he said. "Six beachfront properties, all of them tired, all of them losing money. Whoever wins needs a brand strategy that can turn them around in eighteen months. I want you leading it."

"You know who I've been working for."

"I know you built the Aurelia launch in Monaco before you ever met Graham. I know you've been quietly fixing his hotels for three years without your name on anything." His gray eyes stayed on mine. "I want you as an independent Brand Strategy Lead. Your title, your team, your call."

"And the catch?"

"You sign a clean-room agreement. A strict one." He counted it off without looking away. "You don't bring a single Whitmore document. You don't tell me anything about their unannounced bid. You don't use anyone you know to get us an edge. If you break any of it, the contract's void and I'll pull you off the project myself."

I stared at him. "You think I'd sell Graham out?"

"I think plenty of people would assume you would, after tonight. That's why it goes in writing." He paused. "I don't need anything Graham knows. I want your judgment."

He let that sit for a second.

"Not his secrets."

I looked at him then. Really looked, for the first time since I'd turned around. Nobody had talked about my work that way in years. At Whitmore, my ideas became Graham's ideas by the time they reached the boardroom, and I'd told myself that was what partners did.

The pool door slammed open.

Graham stood in the doorway, breathing hard, his tie pulled loose. His eyes went from me to Sebastian, to the wet hair and the robe and the two feet of space between us.

His face changed completely.

"Stay away from my fiancée," he said.

Sebastian didn't say a word. He just glanced at me, like whatever happened next was mine to decide.

Graham crossed the tile toward us. "Evelyn, come on. Whatever he's been telling you…"

I closed my hand slowly around the ring until the diamond bit into my palm.

Then I looked at him.

"Five minutes ago, when you were kissing someone else," I said, "why didn't you remember I was your fiancée?"

Graham opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

In three years, I had never once seen him without an answer.
