He Stole My Fashion Empire, Then Fell in Love With the Woman Who Destroyed It Chapter 1

SOPHIA'S POV

The last black crystal went into Nocturne's collar at 7:40, twenty minutes before the Maison Vale fall show.

I pushed the needle through with my mother's silver thimble, the same one she'd worn for thirty years in a Lyon atelier that smelled like steam and chalk. The metal was worn thin at the tip. Her finger had shaped it. Now mine did.

Nocturne was the closing gown, black silk organza embroidered with the night-vine print I'd drawn the winter she died. Six years of my life were in this brand. That dress held the last of hers.

Lucas's tablet buzzed on the cutting table beside my silver shears.

I reached over to silence it for him. He was always leaving it unlocked, always too busy to check. My thumb stopped above the screen.

**IP Assignment Confirmed: Maison Vale LLC to Camille Hart Studio.**

The attachment listed the assets. The registered Nocturne illustrations. The night-vine print. The final sketch series from my mother's archive.

Status: Completed.

The fitting room curtain slid open behind me.

Camille Hart stepped out wearing the sample I'd taken in at the waist three separate times because Lucas said our "brand consultant" needed to look perfect for the investors. A laminated badge hung against her chest.

**Camille Hart. Creative Director.**

I hadn't approved that badge. I hadn't even seen one printed.

My shears, my mother's thimble, and that badge were all in front of me now, like someone had laid out the evidence for me.

Lucas came in from the hallway, saw my face, then saw the tablet in my hand. He crossed the room in four strides, took it, and turned it face down on the table. His palm stayed flat on top of it, right where my hand had been.

"What is that?" I asked.

"It's just paperwork, Sophia. Don't make this ugly tonight."

He'd never used that voice on me before. It was the voice he used with late suppliers.

I didn't argue. I picked up the press book from the stack by the door, still warm from the printer, and flipped to the credits page.

*Founder and Creative Director: Sophia Vale.* That was what I'd approved on Monday.

The page read: **Creative Director: Camille Hart.**

My name was gone.

I pulled out my phone and logged into the finance portal. The dashboard loaded slowly, then flashed a gray banner. *Read-only access.* I tapped the vendor payments tab. *You do not have permission to view this page.*

"Lucas."

"You signed the restructuring documents months ago." He said it calmly, almost kindly. "You just never read them. You've only ever cared about fabric and cuts. The capital structure bored you."

Behind him, Camille picked my show headset off the rack, the one with my initials taped to the band, and fitted it over her ear.

"Testing," she said into the mic. Somewhere down the hall, a stage manager answered her.

Something in my chest went very cold and very clear.

Three months ago, in the back of a car on the way to the Fashion Week dinner, Lucas had handed me an iPad and said the bank needed signatures on a refinancing package before midnight. I'd signed six times without looking up from my sketches.

Two months ago, he'd moved my mother's original sketchbooks out of her Queens storage unit for an "insurance inventory." They never came back.

Last month, our CFO stopped copying me on reports.

I'd filed each of those away as separate problems. A busy partner. A cautious insurer. An overworked accountant.

They had never been separate.

"Hold the show," I said. "Fifteen minutes. I need to see what I signed."

Two dressers stopped moving. A model in the doorway froze with one earring in.

Lucas raised his voice just enough for everyone to hear. "The brand isn't going to be held hostage by your emotions. Not tonight." He put his hand on Camille's shoulder. "Camille understands the business side you never cared to learn."

Camille gave me a sympathetic little smile, like I was a client who'd just found out her deposit was nonrefundable.

"Then show me the board packet," I said. "All of it."

He laughed under his breath. "Fine. Diane, bring her the binder."

Our in-house lawyer set a thick black binder in front of me without meeting my eyes. Lucas folded his arms. He thought I'd skim two pages, cry, and give up.

I read every page.

Preferred share financing, opened eight months ago. The operating agreement called the LLC membership units shares and assigned their voting weights. A voting conversion clause buried in an amendment. A trigger record dated last Tuesday: Sophia Vale, voting interest reduced from 51% to 18%.

Then the IP assignment. Every design asset I'd created since founding the company, transferred to Camille Hart Studio for a total consideration of ten dollars.

Ten dollars. Less than the crystals on one cuff of Nocturne.

I turned to the expense ledger. Maison Vale had been paying Camille's studio rent for six months. Her flights to Paris. A security deposit on a private apartment in Tribeca.

I knew the dates without checking a calendar. March 14th, the weekend Lucas said he was in Milan inspecting a mill. May 2nd, our anniversary, when he called from "a supplier dinner in Como" and told me to save him a slice of cake.

I'd saved it. It went stale in the fridge.

The last tab was labeled *Archive Rights Schedule*.

U.S. commercial rights to the Celeste Vale Archive, transferred. My mother's signature was scanned at the bottom of the original license, faint and slanted the way her hand had gotten near the end.

Lucas's signature sat in the approval box beside it.

I pressed my finger to my mother's name. I remembered the hospital corridor in Lyon, the vending machine humming, Lucas holding both my hands and saying, *I'll protect everything she left you. I promise.*

He'd kept the promise. He'd just protected it for someone else.

This wasn't emergency financing. It wasn't Camille overstepping. It wasn't me misunderstanding a spreadsheet.

He'd planned this for eight months while sleeping next to me.

"You read all that?" Lucas asked. He sounded faintly impressed.

"You paid for her apartment with my company."

"Our company." He leaned against the table. "Let's be honest, Soph. You were the talent. I built everything that made the talent valuable."

I didn't answer.

I picked up my encrypted phone and photographed every page in the binder, one by one, while the backstage clock ticked toward eight. Lucas watched, smirking at first, then not.

When I finished, I slid my mother's thimble into my pocket.

Then I worked the engagement ring off my finger. It stuck at the knuckle for a second. I set it on top of the board resolution, centered over the line where my voting rights died.

"Sophia," Lucas said. "What are you doing?"

I dialed a number in Paris. It was nearly two in the morning there. She picked up on the second ring.

"Maître Moreau. It's Sophia."

"Sophia. Is everything all right?"

"I need to confirm something. The Moreau Archive Trust still holds the European registrations independently? The design filings, the trademarks, the cross-border licenses?"

"Of course. Your mother structured it that way. Maison Vale only holds a revocable license."

Lucas went still.

"Then suspend it," I said. "Effective immediately. All European use of trust assets by Maison Vale. And I need every server log preserved."

A short pause. "I'll send the notice within the hour. The certificate is already in your secure inbox."

"Thank you."

I hung up. My phone chimed. The Moreau Trust certificate glowed on the screen.

Lucas reached for my elbow.

I stepped back before he could touch me.

His hand hung in the air between us. His throat moved as he swallowed. For the first time in six years, he looked like a man who'd misread the fine print.

"You're going to wreck tonight's show over a few documents?" he said. "Half the collection ships to Paris next week. Do you understand what you just did?"

"I read it," I said. "Unlike some people, I actually read it."

Camille pulled the headset off her ear. "Lucas, the stage manager's asking if we're still going at eight."

He didn't answer her. He was staring at me.

I picked up my silver shears and tucked my phone into my jacket. The ring stayed on the table, catching the light from the vanity bulbs.

"You can keep the company you stole," I told him. "You don't get to keep the name that made it worth stealing."

I walked past the racks, past Nocturne on her dress form with the last crystal still bright at her collar, past the dressers who parted for me without a word.

Behind me, Lucas's tablet started buzzing on the cutting table.

Once. Twice. Then it wouldn't stop.
