Divorce: A Gateway to a New Future Chapter 1

At my birthday bash, my wife of nine years, Elara Blake, boldly brought her old flame.

During the party, he suggested he share a toast with my wife.

She didn't skip a beat before agreeing.

As jaws dropped around the room, I didn't cause a scene or make a dramatic exit. Instead, I clapped and called out, "Is this the party theme now? How about an encore kiss?"

"Mr. Blake, Elara's three sheets to the wind. I'm taking her home. Hope I'm not crashing your night?"

I watched with narrowed eyes as another man scooped up my wife to take her home.

I stepped up to lend a hand.

But Elara brushed me off.

Clinging to him, she whispered, "Leo, stay with me. You know how much you mean to me? I really do..."

Her declaration floored me.

It was like a punch to the gut, each word twisting the knife deeper.

In that moment, she seemed more isolated and daunting than ever.

"Mr. Blake, keep tabs on Elara. Letting her roam drunk at this hour is playing with fire. Catch you later, Mr. Blake."

He dumped her in my arms with a smirk that was a mix of triumph and scorn.

How could I miss the play he was making?

That was pure hostility.

He wasn't just her fantasy anymore; he was throwing down the gauntlet, aiming to replace me.

I ushered my wife to bed.

She was totally plastered.

Yet, she kept mumbling, "Leo, you're way better than him."

"You get me more than he ever did."

"Over the five years we've been together, he's never tuned into what I need."

"He's all about his business and his cash."

"He doesn't know me at all..."

"You're the only one who really sees me..."

Listening to her babble in her drunken stupor, I slumped to the floor, back against the wall.

As she spilled her guts, my own heart shattered.

I've known her since high school.

I crushed on her for three long years. I had the chops for an Ivy League spot—think Harvard or Yale.

But I chose her college just to stay close.

Once there, I went all out to win her over, and by sophomore year, she was mine.

I treasured her like gold.

I doted on her, met her every whim, and held her like something precious.

Senior year, I popped the question.

But she laid it on thick, "No man conquers me easily. If you want a 'yes,' scale Everest first."

I dove headlong into that challenge.

Nearly met my maker on that peak.

Moved by my ordeal, she said "yes" to marriage.

And I've been off-kilter ever since.

Post-wedding, she always pitted me against the world.

"See Aurora Sinclair? Her hubby pulls in over 20 grand a month, and you're scraping by? How can you even face yourself?"

"Remember Seraphina Blackwood? Her guy's a big shot with a BMW—pretty slick."

"Celeste Ravenscroft's beau snagged a pad in Manhattan. I hear it's sky-high per square foot. Isn't it time we ditch this dump?"

"You never care about what's on my mind, just your games and streams!"

Her constant digs and airs pushed me to the edge.

I ditched my day job and bet it all on a startup.
