Discovering Fiancé's Hidden Marriage Chapter 1

I hummed softly to myself as I rummaged through Ryan's nightstand drawer. The melody was from our first dance—a piece I'd chosen for our upcoming wedding. One month. Just one more month and I would finally be Mrs. Mitchell after six long years together.

My fingers brushed past his collection of expensive watches, searching for the antique silver cufflinks he needed for tonight's networking event. They were a gift from me on our third anniversary—back when I could barely afford them on my music instructor's salary.

"Where did you put them, Ryan?" I muttered, pushing aside papers and receipts.

My hand froze when I touched something unusual—thick, official-looking paper. Curious, I pulled it out, expecting maybe a business contract or property deed.

The ornate border caught my eye first. Then the official seal. Then the words that shattered my world in an instant.

*Certificate of Marriage*

My eyes frantically scanned the document, certain there was some mistake. But there it was in black and white: Ryan Mitchell and Isabella Ross, wed six months ago.

Isabella Ross. The Instagram influencer whose posts Ryan occasionally liked. The woman he'd dismissed as "just a business contact" whenever I asked.

The room tilted as I sank onto the edge of our bed—the bed we'd picked out together for *our* home. Six years of memories flashed before me: helping Ryan draft his first business plan at my tiny apartment table; using my savings to help him open his first coffee shop; putting my career at the Conservatory on hold to help him expand.

I don't know how long I sat there, the certificate trembling in my hands. The Ryan I thought I knew—the man I'd sacrificed everything for—couldn't possibly have done this. There had to be an explanation.

But the document in my hands told a different story.

The next evening, I slipped into the networking event at the downtown Seattle Marriott. I'd spent the day in a daze, unable to confront Ryan, needing to see him first—to watch him—before the words could come.

Ryan stood in his element at the center of a circle of investors, his tall frame commanding attention in the suit I'd helped him select. He hadn't noticed me yet.

I moved closer, staying just behind a large floral arrangement. Close enough to hear.

"Mitchell Digital has exceeded projections for the third quarter running," he was saying, swirling the amber liquid in his glass. "We're positioned to expand into the Los Angeles market by year's end."

"And what about your personal life?" asked an older gentleman. "Heard you're finally tying the knot with that lovely music teacher. Smart move—she's been with you since the beginning, hasn't she?"

Something shifted in Ryan's expression—so subtle that only someone who had studied his face for six years would notice. A tightening around the eyes. A calculated pause.

"Natalie?" He chuckled, and the sound cut through me like glass. "She's been... useful. A stable companion during the growth phase."

Another man laughed. "Don't tell me you're getting cold feet?"

Ryan lowered his voice, but not enough. "Between us, I'm just being practical. A split now would mean dividing assets I've worked too hard to build. She's comfortable. Predictable. Why rock the boat?"

My knees nearly buckled. The certificate had been a knife to the heart. These words were the twist of the blade.

"That absolute bastard," Chloe hissed, placing a steaming mug of chamomile tea in my trembling hands. My best friend had arrived twenty minutes after my tearful call, still wearing her gallery curator clothes, her dark curls windblown from rushing over.

I sat cross-legged on my couch, staring at the marriage certificate now laid out on the coffee table like a bomb that had already detonated.

"Six years, Chloe," I whispered. "Six years of my life. I left the Conservatory for him. I believed every word."

"You need to confront him," Chloe said firmly, sitting beside me. "Tonight. Don't give him time to spin some elaborate lie."

"He's already married," I said, the words still feeling foreign on my tongue. "And today I heard him call me a 'useful companion.' Like I'm some... some asset on his balance sheet."

Chloe's eyes flashed with anger. "Then it's time to show Ryan Mitchell exactly who he's been underestimating."

I took a sip of tea, feeling something shift inside me. The numbness was receding, replaced by a calm, cold clarity I'd never experienced before.

"You're right," I said, setting down the mug. "It's time."

As if on cue, I heard his key in the lock.
