You Wanted a New Son, So My Daughter Chose the Richest Man Alive Chapter 1

"Is Daddy going to be here soon, Mommy?"

Lily smoothed the skirt of her blush-pink tulle dress, looking up at me with wide, expectant eyes. I had spent three late nights sewing every stitch of that dress by hand, finishing the hem with tiny embroidered pearls just so she could feel like a real princess for her fifth birthday.

"He promised he would, sweetheart," I said, offering her a reassuring smile as I tucked a stray curl behind her ear. "He said he wouldn't miss your special day for anything in the world."

The private dining room at Le Crillon was set for three. In the center of the mahogany table sat a custom two-tiered strawberry chiffon cake, coated in fresh whipped cream and surrounded by spun sugar. Around it, the gourmet dishes we had ordered—roasted duck breast, butter-poached lobster, and garlic parmesan risotto—sat under polished silver cloches, untouched and slowly losing their warmth.

Ethan had sworn he would leave his office early. He had texted me at four in the afternoon: *Wrapping up a board meeting. I'll be there by six, save the first slice of cake for me.*

It was now half past eight.

Lily’s small hands rested on the white tablecloth, her gaze fixed entirely on the five pastel candles waiting on the top tier. "Can we light them yet?"

"Let’s give Daddy just a few more minutes," I murmured, checking my phone for what felt like the fiftieth time. The screen remained blank.

By ten o'clock, the restaurant had grown quiet. The gentle piano music in the background began to feel like a mocking countdown. A waiter stepped in quietly, his expression full of sympathy, and replaced the warped, half-melted candles for the second time.

"Mommy, my eyes feel heavy," Lily whispered, her chin resting against her folded arms on the edge of the table.

"I know, baby. Just rest your eyes for a little bit."

By eleven forty-five, the candles had melted down into the cream again. The fresh strawberries had begun to slump sideways, bleeding red juice across the soft white frosting.

I picked up my phone to dial Ethan’s direct line once more. It went straight to voicemail.

Before I could lock the screen, an incoming call flashed across the display.

*Evelyn.* My mother-in-law.

I answered immediately, pressing the phone to my ear. "Ethan? Where are you—"

"It isn't Ethan, Chloe," Evelyn’s voice cut through the line, sharp and freezing. "Stop blowing up his phone every ten minutes. He is busy with matters that actually require his attention."

A knot formed in my throat. "Evelyn, it's Lily's fifth birthday. Ethan promised her he would be here hours ago. We've been sitting in a restaurant waiting for him since six."

"And you think a child's birthday takes precedence over important family obligations?" Evelyn scoffed, her tone dripping with disdain. "Ethan is in Manhattan at the elite youth fencing championship. Sarah’s son, Leo, made it to the finals tonight, and Ethan needed to be there to support him."

The air left my lungs all at once. "He went to Sarah's son's tournament? On Lily's birthday?"

"Don't take that tone with me," Evelyn snapped. "Leo is an exceptional boy who needs a strong male role model in his corner. A tournament like this sets up his future. Lily is just a little girl having another silly party. She doesn't need Ethan hovering over her when there are real accomplishments to celebrate. Stop making a fuss over nothing and take the child home."

The line clicked dead before I could speak another word.

I sat frozen, the phone still pressed against my ear. The silence in the dining room was deafening.

"Excuse me, ma'am?"

The waiter approached our table with hesitant steps, holding a black leather billfold. The dining room lights had already been dimmed to a soft amber glow, signaling closing time.

"I'm terribly sorry," the waiter said softly. "Our kitchen closed an hour ago, and the staff is finishing closing duties for the night. We need to settle the tab."

"Of course," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. I handed him my credit card without looking up. "Could you please box the cake for us?"

A few minutes later, he returned with a white cardboard pastry box. The beautiful two-tiered cake was ruined, slumped against the cardboard lining in a shapeless heap of cream and melted wax.

Lily sat up in her chair, rubbing her tired eyes. She reached out with both hands and pulled the warm, deformed box into her lap, clutching it tightly against her princess dress.

Tears welled in her big, bright eyes, finally spilling over her flushed cheeks.

"Mommy..." Lily’s voice trembled, breaking on a small sob. "Does Daddy not want me anymore?"

"Lily, no, baby, that's not true—"

"Does he like that boy better than me?" she asked, her lower lip quivering. "He didn't come to my party. He didn't want my cake."

Every word felt like a blade twisting directly into my chest. For five years, I had made excuses for Ethan. When he missed parent-teacher conferences, when he canceled family vacations, when he forgot our anniversaries—I told myself he was just working tirelessly to expand his empire.

I pulled Lily into my arms, pressing her face into my shoulder as she cried softly against my neck.

My phone buzzed on the tablecloth. A social media notification lit up the glass.

*Ethan has just shared a new post.*

With trembling fingers, I tapped the notification.

The picture loaded instantly. Under the bright stadium lights of the Manhattan sports complex, Ethan stood tall and proud in a tailored suit. His arm was wrapped firmly around Sarah’s waist, pulling her close, while his other hand ruffled the hair of eight-year-old Leo, who beamed at the camera holding a gleaming gold fencing trophy.

Sarah was glowing, leaning into Ethan's side as if they were the picture-perfect couple.

Beneath the photo, Ethan had written a single line:

*Supporting my true family.*

I stared at the screen. The glowing words burned into my retinas until every shred of lingering hope, every ounce of patience, and every drop of love I had harbored for this man shattered into dust.

I didn't scream. I didn't break down.

Instead, a strange, hollow quiet settled deep inside my chest.

I took a soft linen napkin and gently wiped the wet tracks from Lily's cheeks.

"Mommy is here," I said, my voice steady, stripped of all warmth. "You will never have to wait for anyone ever again."

I lifted Lily into my arms, picking up the ruined cake box with my free hand. We walked out through the empty restaurant and stepped into the crisp night air of the city.

I buckled Lily securely into the backseat of my car, handed her favorite plush rabbit to her, and watched her drift off to sleep, exhausted from hours of waiting.

Closing the rear door, I stepped onto the pavement and pulled a second phone from the hidden inner pocket of my coat—a matte-black, custom-encrypted device that had remained untouched for five years.

I powered it on and dialed a private global number that connected instantly without ringing.

"Ma'am," an authoritative voice answered immediately on the other end. "We have been awaiting your call."

I looked up at the glittering skyline of Manhattan, my gaze turning completely to ice.

"Initiate full asset audits for Sterling Global's North American division," I said, each word cold and unyielding. "And prepare divorce papers immediately."
