Cursed Me to Die Early: Why Were You Crazy When I Died? Chapter 1

On the seventh day after my diagnosis of end-stage kidney disease, I picked out a grave plot.

Just as I signed the purchase contract, my husband appeared – with his soulmate Claire and her dog in tow.

“Claire is all alone, and that dog’s the only family she’s got left. The vet says it only has three months to live – do you really have to fight her for this burial spot?

“Amy, you better make sure you die before her dog does!”

Well, I did exactly that. I left before the dog. And when I did, he lost his mind.

I chose this spot after consulting with a feng shui expert to make sure it aligns with my energies and prevent me from marrying Luke ever again in my next life.

Just for that reason alone, I would never, ever give it up.

“You’re buying this exact plot now, in the middle of all this?” Claire practically screamed. “You’re deliberately trying to leave my dog without a final resting place!”

Her voice rose. “Is it money you want? I’ll pay ten times the price to buy this plot from you – is that enough?”

I couldn’t help it; I laughed.

“Where’s a bar hostess like you getting 20 thousand from? Of course, it’s Luke’s money.

“You’re really going to use our shared marital assets to buy my grave plot for your dog? Do you even hear yourself?”

Seeing she wasn’t getting anywhere with me, Claire turned her pleading eyes to Luke.

“Please, Luke, help my poor dog. If it can’t rest in peace, I’ll feel guilty for the rest of my life.”

She looked ready to pass out from the sheer emotional exertion, sobbing into his shoulder.

Luke’s expression hardened as he dabbed her tears away and turned to me with a look of cold disgust.

“Amy, what gives you the nerve to speak to Claire like that? She’s using money I’m perfectly happy to give her. Don’t think I don’t know that the money you used came straight out of my account!

“If you know what’s good for you, you’ll give up that plot right now. Otherwise, I have a thousand ways to take it from you.”

Despite all the disillusionment I felt, the thought of them taking this plot still clawed at me, suffocating like a weight on my chest. If they took this, I’d never break free of him – not even in my next life.

I forced myself to stay calm. “Luke, I earned that money. The kidney I gave you was worth a lot more than twenty thousand.”

“If I hadn’t been blinded by love back then, I’d never have gone through with that surgery – and I sure wouldn’t be needing this grave so soon. Do you really think that what you owe me can be settled with 20 thousand?”

Luke froze, his confident sneer faltering. He had always believed that Claire had donated the kidney, so my words clearly shook him.

“Oh, Luke,” Claire sighed weakly, clutching her side. “Since I lost my kidney, I just haven’t felt the same. Everything hurts... Would you take me to the hospital?”

His momentary confusion faded as he glanced down at her pale face, then fixed me with an icy glare.

“Amy, you’re despicable! First, you try to take over Claire’s dog’s grave, and now you’re trying to steal credit for her life-saving kidney transplant? You couldn’t be more heartless.”

Scooping Claire into his arms with a gentle reverence, Luke shot me a look of loathing over his shoulder as he left.
