Broken Hand, Unbroken Architect's Spirit Chapter 1

Chapter 1

Charlotte's POV:

For five years, I built a perfect life with my fiancé, Bradley.

That was what made me believe him when he said, "Just a little more, and life will be complete."

We had a dream apartment, an active social circle, and thriving careers. I thought I knew him, understood his pursuit of excellence.

But I was wrong.

That "missing piece" was never about our life. It was about me. I was nothing but a temporary substitute, a character standing in the shadow of another woman—Ariel Fletcher.

She was his former student, and she looked strikingly like me.

Our love story began simply enough. Bradley was a new professor at the university, and he'd been captivated by my presentation at a campus architecture exhibition.

After the show, he walked up to me with a genuine smile and praised my innovative use of sustainable materials.

I had just graduated from grad school, an up-and-coming architectural designer. His attention made me feel flattered and special.

He was elegant, articulate, and brilliant. We fell in love quickly.

One crisp autumn evening, we strolled along the river, city lights shimmering on the water. Bradley held my hand and said softly,

"Charlotte, you complete me. This is everything I've ever wanted."

I smiled and rested my head on his shoulder.

Back then, I was thinking about our shared dreams, our intertwined futures.

Time passed, and we built a life that seemed enviable. We cooked delicious meals together, traveled the world, and supported each other's careers. I landed a position at a top architecture firm, while Bradley's academic career flourished. He published highly regarded papers, secured significant research grants, and became an authoritative voice in his field.

Every achievement felt like a shared victory.

Yet one phrase lingered, a faint undercurrent beneath the surface of our happiness. After Bradley won an important award for his research, I found him standing at the apartment window, his gaze distant. I wrapped my arms around him from behind and pressed a gentle kiss to his shoulder.

"Bradley," I whispered, "you did it. You deserve this."

He turned, his eyes fixed on some far-off point.

"Yes, Charlotte," he said. "It's wonderful. But it's still missing something to be complete."

I frowned slightly, studying his face.

"Missing something?" I asked. "What could possibly be missing? You've achieved so much."

He just shook his head with a faint, bitter smile.

"Nothing to worry about, darling," he replied, pulling me closer. "Probably just my habit of chasing perfection."

I chose not to press further. I believed he simply wanted more.

I worked hard, trying to anticipate his needs, to fill whatever gap he might feel.

I grew my hair out from short to long—the "classic and elegant" style he'd once mentioned in passing.

I adjusted my wardrobe to suit his understated, refined taste. I even learned to appreciate his preferred classical music, replacing my beloved jazz with Bach and Beethoven.

I did all of it because I loved him, because I wanted to be the perfect partner in his perfect life.

That "missing piece" became a recurring theme. When we signed the lease on our ideal penthouse apartment, he stood on the balcony overlooking the city, a glass of champagne in hand.

"Spectacular," he marveled. "Truly spectacular. But it's still missing something to be complete."

When I finally qualified for an international architectural design competition—a major milestone in my career—he congratulated me warmly.

"I always knew you'd make it," he said, his eyes scanning my portfolio. "Your talent is undeniable. But it's still missing something to be complete."

I laughed and teased him, giving him a gentle nudge.

"Your 'missing piece' again," I joked. "What is it this time? A self-cleaning kitchen? A flying car?"

He just smiled, a subtle, private look in his eyes. I didn't dig deeper.

I loved him, so I found reasonable explanations for every vague thing he said. I put his needs first, believing my devotion would eventually make him feel "complete." I thought his words were about dreams, not absence.

Until Ariel Fletcher returned to the States.
