Boyfriend Griped I Saved Only $750, Then Stole $430K Gold Chapter 1

1: 1

Once he found out how much money I actually got each month, my boyfriend, Lambert Lambert, slammed the menu down right there at the table.

"You get thirteen hundred dollars a month for living expenses, and you just got a five-hundred-and-twenty holiday cash gift on top of that, and you only put a hundred and ten into our joint account?"

I stared at him, baffled.

"You only put in a hundred and ten too, didn't you?"

Lambert's voice shot up.

"How is that the same? My whole allowance is three hundred a month!"

"Do you have any idea what I go through every single day just to save up that hundred and ten?"

"Ada Fisher, I honestly never imagined it. Your family has money, and you can just sit there and watch your own boyfriend suffer?"

I was quiet for a few seconds, then asked him seriously,

"Lambert, did you drink too much cheap booze and fry your brain?"

……

A week before the harvest festival break, Lambert had asked me to get barbecue with him on the strip behind campus.

Six months earlier, we'd made plans to go to Charleston over the holiday to see the lantern show.

Originally I'd only invited my two roommates. Lambert heard about it and insisted on coming along.

He said couples should travel together, and he was the one who suggested setting up a joint account, each of us putting in a hundred and ten a month to cover train tickets, lodging, and admission.

I thought clean and clear like that was a good idea, so I agreed.

Lambert's family didn't have much. His monthly allowance was only three hundred dollars.

When we went out, I usually covered most of it.

Sometimes I paid directly; sometimes he'd pay and I'd quietly make it up to him some other way.

But a meal never cost much, and I'd never kept score with him about it.

That day, over dinner, Lambert said there was a coupon on the group-buy app, and asked me to hand him my phone to use it.

I didn't think twice and passed it right over.

I didn't expect that just as he was claiming the coupon, a message from my mom popped up at the top of the screen.

【Ada, I sent the harvest festival cash gift over, five hundred and twenty. Don't be stingy with yourself while you're traveling.】

Below it was the bank deposit alert.

Lambert stared at the screen for several seconds, his face slowly darkening.

"Ada Fisher, have you been hiding something from me this whole time?"

His tone was grave, like he'd caught proof I was cheating.

I blinked.

"Hiding what?"

Lambert went straight into my transfer history.

"Your mom sent you thirteen hundred for living expenses this month, and now another five hundred and twenty."

"You've got thirteen hundred a month, and you never once told me?"

I looked at the phone gripped in his hand, and something turned uneasy in me.

Set aside that my allowance was none of his business.

What gave him the right to go through my transfer records without asking?

The barbecue place was right by campus, and there were plenty of students inside.

Lambert didn't lower his voice. If anything, he grilled me like he was the one who'd been horribly wronged.

People around us started turning to look.

I didn't want to argue in public, so I just reached for my own phone.

"Give it back first. Whatever it is, let's sit down and talk it through."

Lambert pulled it away from my hand.

"My allowance is three hundred a month, and to go to Charleston with you, I put in a hundred and ten every month. That leaves a hundred and ninety for food, transit, and study materials."

"I stretch every dollar in half."

"And you?"

"You get thirteen hundred a month and still only put a hundred and ten into the account."

"Watching me eat the cheapest combo at the dining hall every day, do you think that's fun?"

I looked at him, hardly believing it.

"Lambert, in the first place, I was planning to go to Charleston with Josie and Celeste. You're the one who said you wanted in."

"Setting up the joint account was your idea too."

"We take the same train, share the same room, buy the same tickets, and each of us covers the same cost. What's the problem?"

Lambert let out a cold laugh.

"You think equal amounts means fair?"

"I put in a third of my allowance. You didn't even put in a tenth."

"You keep saying you love me, and then you just sit back and watch me struggle?"

A girl at the next table couldn't hold it in and muttered,

"Is this a relationship or a charity drive?"

Another girl laughed too.

"So because the girlfriend gets a bigger allowance, she's supposed to pay her boyfriend a tax based on the percentage?"

Lambert's face went from red to white and back.

He set the phone down on the table and stuck his neck out, arguing back,

"What do you people know?"

"I'm willing to put in a third of my allowance because I love her."

"Since she loves me too, she should put in the same percentage."

When he finished, he turned back to me, his tone softening a good deal.

"Ada, I'm not trying to take advantage of you."

"I just want you to prove you're as serious about this relationship as I am."
