BOUND TO THE BLACKWOOD BILLIONAIRE Chapter 1

Lila Hart had imagined her first day at Blackwood Industries too many times to count. In her head, she walked in confident. Collected. Perfectly put together.

Reality?

Her heart hammered so loudly she was certain the security guards could hear it from across the marble lobby.

The building itself felt alive-steel, glass, and gold rising into the sky like a monument built for people far more important than her. Blackwood Industries wasn't just a company. It was an empire. And stepping inside felt like walking into a world designed for people who didn't make mistakes... or spill their coffee on their only blazer twenty minutes before arriving.

She inhaled deeply, brushed invisible lint from her sleeve, and whispered to herself, "You can do this, Lila. Don't freak out. Don't embarrass yourself. Don't-"

Thud.

Her forehead hit something solid.

No-someone solid.

She staggered back, mortified, as her bag slipped from her shoulder, its contents spilling across the polished floor. Pens scattered. Papers slid. Her phone skidded dangerously close to the elevator shaft.

"Oh my God-I'm so sorry!" she blurted, dropping to her knees as she scrambled for her belongings. "I wasn't watching where I-"

"Clearly."

The voice was quiet but cold enough to freeze her mid-reach.

Lila's breath caught. She looked up.

The man towering over her wasn't simply handsome-he was devastating in a way that didn't feel human. His suit was black, tailored with surgical precision. His hair dark, styled effortlessly. And his eyes... sharp, unreadable, with the exact same chill as his tone.

He studied her with the stillness of someone who didn't waste energy unless absolutely necessary.

"I-I'm really sorry," she stammered, cheeks burning. "I didn't see you."

"You should pay more attention."

He didn't raise his voice.

He didn't need to.

Every syllable rolled off his tongue like a command forged in steel.

She forced a painful, flustered laugh. "Right. I'll try to keep my eyes open next time."

No reaction. Not even a curve of the lips.

Lila grabbed her last paper and stood, expecting him to step aside or walk away like normal people.

Instead, he simply... stared.

Not with interest.

Not with annoyance.

But with something quieter, more assessing-like he was calculating her usefulness and finding her lacking.

Embarrassment wrapped around her throat like a tight scarf.

"Um. Sorry again," she whispered.

His gaze swept over her-her cheap bag, her nervous posture, her entire existence-and for a split second, she thought she saw a flicker of something. Recognition? Amusement? Annoyance?

She couldn't tell.

Then he walked away, towards a private elevator guarded by security.

"Mr. Blackwood," one guard greeted.

Lila froze.

Blackwood.

As in... Blackwood Industries.

As in... the CEO.

As in... the extremely powerful man she just collided with like a malfunctioning robot.

Her stomach dropped so far it practically hit the ground.

"Oh no," she whispered to no one.

She managed to get herself onto a different elevator, gripping her bag like it was the only thing anchoring her to the planet. Her heart hadn't slowed by the time she reached the 29th floor.

The doors slid open to a polished hallway lined with glass-walled offices, all sleek and intimidating.

She followed the sign for "HR - Onboarding," repeating a new prayer in her head:

Please don't let him remember me. Please don't let him remember me. Please let the ground swallow me before he does.

Claire from HR greeted her warmly, oblivious to Lila's internal destruction.

"Lila Hart? Welcome! Let me show you around and get you settled."

Lila tried to smile. "Thanks. I'm... excited."

Claire laughed. "You look like you might faint."

"Just first-day nerves," Lila lied.

"Oh, we all had them. But you'll be fine," Claire assured. "Your department moves fast, but once you learn the ropes, you'll do great."

Fast was fine.

Pressure was fine.

Running head-first into the CEO?

Not fine.

Claire led her through the floor, introducing her to team members who shook her hand politely but eyed her with curiosity. She heard whispers of:

"New assistant?"

"Didn't we just get one last month?"

"She looks nervous-poor thing."

Claire finally stopped outside a glass conference room.

"This is where we have our morning briefings," she said. "And you're just in time!"

Lila nodded, wiping her palms discreetly on her skirt.

"You'll meet some of the department heads, and-"

The door opened from the inside.

And Lila's blood turned to ice.

Aiden Blackwood was seated at the head of the table.

His presence swallowed the room whole-cold control wrapped in an expensive suit. Every executive looked toward him as if waiting for permission to breathe.

Lila's heart dropped into her shoes.

Claire smiled brightly, completely unaware of the horror unfolding beside her.

"Everyone," Claire announced, "this is our newest team member, Miss Lila Hart."

The man whose suit she had wrinkled-whose personal space she had invaded-whose shoes she might have stepped on-lifted his gaze.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

His eyes locked onto hers.

Recognition hit instantly.

Then something sharper slipped through his expression-annoyance? amusement? interest?

Lila couldn't tell.

The room held its breath.

Aiden leaned back ever so slightly, voice low and even.

"Miss Hart," he said, each syllable smooth as ice, "we meet again."

Heat flooded her face. She managed a tiny bow of her head.

"Yes, sir. Apparently... we do."

A muscle ticked in his jaw-almost invisible, almost nothing-but enough for her to know he remembered every second of their collision.

Wonderful. Amazing. Fantastic.

She should have stayed in bed.

The meeting began, but Lila barely heard a word. Aiden commanded the room with effortless authority, cutting through false confidence with a single raised eyebrow. When he questioned someone, the air shifted. When he approved something, shoulders relaxed.

The man had presence.

The kind that didn't need volume.

The kind that filled silence with quiet danger.

Every now and then, his gaze drifted to Lila.

Not long enough for others to notice.

Just long enough for her to feel exposed.

When the meeting ended, he spoke without looking up from his documents.

"Miss Hart. Stay."

The rest of the room emptied like someone had yelled fire.

Lila approached, hands clasped tightly. "Sir, I truly want to apologize-"

"Don't," he said sharply, finally lifting his gaze to hers. "I don't need apologies. I need competence."

She swallowed.

"You're new," Aiden continued. "Which means you don't know how this company works. So let me be clear."

His tone dropped.

"No distractions."

"Absolutely."

"No mistakes."

"Of course."

"And most importantly..." His eyes hardened. "No attachments. Understand?"

Attachments.

He said it like it was poison.

"Yes, Mr. Blackwood," she whispered.

His gaze swept over her, lingering for an unsettling second-as if trying to decide if she would be trouble.

"We'll see," he murmured.

Before she could interpret that, Claire reappeared. "Mr. Blackwood, they need your approval for-"

"Later." He rose smoothly. "Miss Hart. Settle in. We'll speak again."

He walked out, but not before casting one last unreadable glance over his shoulder.

As Claire guided Lila toward her desk, someone stepped into the hallway-tall, blonde, beautiful.

Jenna.

Her gaze skimmed Lila from head to toe, lingering with thinly veiled disdain.

"So you're the new girl," Jenna said, her smile cold. "How... interesting."

Before Lila could respond, her work email chimed.
