Blessed Luna Rise Chapter 1

The scent of rain-soaked pine and wet fur clung to the air the moment I stepped through the back door of the pack house. My boots left muddy prints across the polished oak floor I had scrubbed three days ago. No one looked up.

Lila sat at the kitchen table with a half-eaten plate of eggs, her dark hair loose around her shoulders, Marcus's shirt slipping off one collarbone. The pup-Noah, three years old and already the image of his dead father-babbled something about wolves while Marcus laughed and wiped jam from the boy's chin with a careful thumb. The sound was soft. Familiar. The kind of sound that used to belong to me.

I set the empty water bucket down harder than I meant to. The metal rang against the floorboards.

Marcus glanced over. His golden eyes softened for half a second, then cooled the way they always did now. "You're late."

"The pump seized again." My voice came out flat. I didn't bother explaining how long I'd stood in the freezing stream wrestling the handle until my fingers went numb. "I'll fix it after dinner."

Lila smiled at me the way people smile at furniture. "I can make you a plate if you're hungry, Elara."

"I'm fine."

I wasn't. My stomach had been empty since noon, but the thought of sitting at that table-watching Marcus feed another woman's child with the same gentle patience he once reserved for me-made the empty ache feel safer.

Noah reached for Marcus's hand. "Daddy, more."

Marcus didn't correct him. He never did.

I turned away before the burn behind my eyes could become anything visible. The hallway smelled of Lila's lavender soap and the faint metallic trace of Marcus's dominance that used to wrap around me like a second skin. Now it slid past me as if I were nothing more than another shadow on the wall.

Upstairs, my room still held the scent of the cedar chest at the foot of the bed and the old quilt my mother had stitched. I closed the door and leaned against it, forehead pressed to the wood, breathing through the tight band around my ribs. Three months. Three months of shared meals, shared laughter, shared everything that had once been mine. Three months of Marcus's mark on my neck growing colder every night while he slept down the hall with the widow and her pup.

A soft knock came later than I expected.

Marcus stood in the doorway, shoulders filling the frame, the same height and breadth that once made me feel safe. His dark hair was damp from a shower. He smelled of cedar and the soap Lila preferred.

"You didn't eat."

"Not hungry."

He stepped inside without asking. The door clicked shut behind him. For a moment neither of us spoke. Rain tapped the window in uneven rhythms. Somewhere downstairs Noah laughed again, high and bright.

Marcus's jaw flexed. "She's still adjusting. The boy needs stability."

"I know."

"You're my mate."

The words landed like stones dropped into still water. I waited for the ripple. Nothing came. Only the hollow space where the bond used to hum.

I met his eyes. "Am I?"

Something flickered there-guilt, maybe, or the old protectiveness that used to make him growl at anyone who looked at me too long. It vanished under the practiced calm he wore now.

"Elara-"

"Don't." I turned toward the window so he wouldn't see my face. The forest beyond the glass was a wall of black trunks and dripping needles. "Just... don't."

He stood there another minute. I counted the raindrops sliding down the pane until the door opened and closed again. His footsteps faded down the stairs. The house settled around the quiet that always followed him when he left me alone.

I stayed at the window until the sky shifted from indigo to the deep blue that comes just before true night. Then I pulled on my jacket, laced my boots, and slipped out the back door the way I had every night this week.

The forest received me without judgment. Pine needles muffled my steps. Cold air scraped my lungs clean. I walked until the pack house lights were only a distant glow and the only sounds were the drip of rain from branches and the distant call of a night bird.

I didn't hear him until he was already too close.

A low growl rolled through the trees-not Marcus's familiar rumble, but something deeper, rougher, edged with a dominance that pressed against my skin like a physical weight. I spun, heart slamming once against my ribs.

He stood between two pines, bare to the waist despite the cold, rain tracing the hard lines of his chest and the dark ink of the tattoos that curled over one shoulder. Black hair fell into eyes the color of wet slate. The rival Alpha. Kael. The one Marcus had warned the pack about for months. The one whose territory bordered ours on the northern ridge.

His gaze locked on mine and didn't move.

"You're a long way from home, little ghost."

The nickname should have stung. Instead it settled somewhere under my sternum, strange and almost welcome. I didn't answer. My wolf stirred for the first time in weeks, ears pricked, curious rather than afraid.

Kael stepped closer. The air between us thickened. Rain slid down his throat and disappeared beneath the waistband of his dark pants. He smelled of storm and iron and something darker I couldn't name.

"Your mate keeps a widow in his bed while you wander the woods alone." His voice was quiet, almost conversational. "Interesting choice."

"It's not your business."

"Isn't it?" He stopped an arm's length away. Close enough that I could see the faint scar cutting through his left eyebrow. Close enough that the heat of him reached me through the cold. "You're bleeding loneliness into the trees. Half the forest can smell it."

I should have turned and run. Pack law demanded it. Rival Alpha. Enemy. Threat. My feet stayed rooted.

Kael's head tilted. The movement was slow, predatory. "He marked you. I can see the bond. It's fading."

My hand rose without thought, fingers brushing the place on my neck where Marcus's teeth had once broken skin. The mark felt cold under my touch.

Kael's eyes tracked the motion. Something hungry and carefully controlled shifted in his expression.

"I didn't come here to fight," I said.

"I know." He took one more step. Rain dripped from the ends of his hair onto my jacket. "You came here to disappear. I came here because the forest told me something interesting was walking alone."

Thunder rolled far off, a low warning. Neither of us looked away.

His hand lifted. I should have flinched. Instead I watched as his fingers brushed a strand of wet hair from my cheek. The touch was light, almost careful, but the contact sent a jolt straight down my spine. My wolf surged forward, pressing against the inside of my skin, wanting more.

Kael's pupils dilated. The slate of his eyes darkened until almost no color remained.

"Your mate is a fool," he said, voice rough now. "Leaving something like you to starve."

I opened my mouth to deny it, to defend Marcus, to say anything that would put distance between us. The words never came.

Because in that moment the wind shifted, carrying a new scent through the trees-Marcus's scent, sharp with fury and the metallic edge of a partial shift. Howls rose from the direction of the pack house, one after another, rising in pitch until they became a single, furious cry.

Kael's lips curved, not quite a smile. His hand remained against my face, thumb resting just below my cheekbone.

"Listen to that," he murmured. "He finally noticed you're gone."

The howls grew closer. Branches cracked under heavy paws. Marcus was coming, and he was coming fast.

Kael's gaze never left mine. The hunger in it no longer carefully controlled. It burned open and raw, the kind of hunger that didn't ask permission.

"Run back if you want," he said, soft enough that only I could hear. "Or stay. But understand this-once I claim what's already slipping through his fingers, I don't give it back."

My pulse hammered in my throat. The bond with Marcus tugged weakly, a frayed thread trying to pull me home. Underneath it something older and sharper stirred, answering the dark promise in Kael's eyes.

The first flash of golden fur broke through the trees thirty yards away.

Kael's fingers tightened just slightly against my skin, not enough to hurt, only enough to keep me from looking away.

"Choose, little ghost," he whispered. "Before he reaches us."

Marcus's roar split the night, full of jealous, belated rage.

And I realized, with a clarity that left me breathless, that the taste of a King was already on my tongue.
