Chapter 13

Carrick stepped out of the Helios Hotel, his mind buzzing with possibilities. Partnering with Maximus Perch and the KWE Mercenary Guild was a massive step toward building the Zenith Family into an unstoppable force. But the text message Maximus had received lingered in his thoughts.

"Aurum Zenith is dangerous. Take him out before it's too late."

Someone was watching. Someone powerful enough to try and strike before he could rise too far.

Carrick lit a cigarette, inhaling deeply as he scanned the city streets. It was late, but the underworld never slept. He needed to move. If someone was coming for him, he'd strike first.

«Ding! New Mission: Identify and eliminate the unknown threat.»

«Reward: +5,000 EXP, Skill Upgrade – Shadow Steps.»

Carrick smirked. So, the game had already begun.

Thirty Minutes Later.

Carrick waited in the shadows near an abandoned warehouse, his phone buzzing in his hand. He had sent out a few feelers, Jack Harris, Alex, and Lila were already digging for information. He also had one more meeting lined up for the night.

The sound of footsteps echoed in the alley. A figure approached, a tall man with a lean, athletic build, his trench coat swaying slightly as he moved. His face was sharp, his eyes like daggers, constantly assessing his surroundings.

Carrick didn't move. He already knew who this was.

"You're late, Kasper," Carrick said coolly.

Kasper 'The Ghost' Vasquez, an infamous information broker. If there was dirt to be found in the underworld, he could dig it up.

Kasper exhaled a cloud of smoke from his cigarette. "You've been making a lot of noise, Carrick. And noise gets attention."

Carrick crossed his arms. "I'm aware. That's why I called you."

Kasper smirked, tossing a small envelope onto a nearby crate. "Someone put a hit on you. $500,000 bounty. That's serious cash."

Carrick raised an eyebrow. "Half a million?"

Kasper nodded. "And guess who's behind it?"

Carrick picked up the envelope and tore it open. Inside was a single sheet of paper with a name scrawled on it. His eyes narrowed.

"Domino Gale."

His older brother.

A slow, bitter laugh escaped Carrick's lips. "Of course."

Domino wasn't waiting for their father, Zachary, to deal with him. He had taken matters into his own hands, hiring assassins to kill Carrick before he could become a real threat.

Kasper leaned against the wall. "Domino didn't go through the usual channels. He paid off independent killers-no direct links to the Gale family."

Carrick clenched his jaw. His own brother had set a price on his head.

"How many assassins took the job?" he asked.

Kasper shrugged. "At least five confirmed. But the biggest name in the mix? Elias Kane."

Carrick's eyes darkened. Elias Kane. The Butcher of Boston.

A former military black ops soldier turned contract killer. Ruthless. Precise. Unstoppable.

Carrick knew the name well. Elias had a 100% success rate. If he accepted a job, the target never survived.

"I assume he's already in the city?" Carrick asked.

Kasper nodded. "Arrived earlier tonight. He's not the type to waste time. If I were you, I'd expect him within the next few hours."

Carrick smirked. "Good. Saves me the trouble of hunting him down."

Kasper scoffed. "You're insane. That guy's a ghost. If he's after you, you'll never see him coming."

Carrick's system chimed in his mind.

«Ding! New Target Identified: Elias Kane.»

«Sub-Mission: Survive the Night.»

«Reward: Combat Skill Upgrade – Predator's Instinct.»

Carrick cracked his knuckles. "We'll see about that."

One Hour Later.

Carrick walked into an empty warehouse on the city's outskirts. The air was thick with the scent of oil and rust. A single overhead light flickered, casting eerie shadows against the steel walls.

He stood in the center of the room, his heartbeat steady. He knew Elias was already here.

"Come on out," Carrick called. "Or do you only kill from the shadows?"

Silence.

Then,

BANG!

A bullet whizzed past Carrick's ear, grazing the skin. Fast. Precise. Deadly.

Carrick rolled to the side, drawing his pistol, but there was nothing, no movement, no sign of the shooter.

He's good.

The system activated.

«Skill Activated: Shadow Steps – Enhanced Reflexes and Stealth Awareness.»

Carrick's senses sharpened. The faintest creak of metal. The smallest shift in air pressure.

He moved just in time, another shot narrowly missed him, embedding into a wooden crate.

Carrick smirked. "You're not the only ghost here, Kane."

Then he moved, swift, silent, unpredictable. Like a predator.

Elias fired again, but Carrick was already gone, weaving through the darkness like a shadow.

Finally, he heard it, the controlled breathing of a trained killer.

Above.

Carrick spun, firing upward. His bullet struck something, a grunt of pain followed, and a dark figure dropped from the rafters.

Elias Kane rolled to his feet, blood dripping from his shoulder. His cold, blue eyes locked onto Carrick.

"Not bad, kid," Elias muttered, flexing his fingers. "You're better than I expected."

Carrick grinned. "Disappointed?"

Elias chuckled. "No. Just more interested now."

Then he charged.

Fast. Brutal. Deadly.

Carrick barely had time to block as Elias swung a knife at his throat. He dodged, feeling the blade slice through the air, missing him by inches.

They exchanged blows, punches, kicks, dodges, each movement sharp, precise, lethal.

Carrick could tell why Elias had never lost a target. He fought like a machine, efficient and unstoppable.

But Carrick wasn't just any target.

With a sudden shift, he trapped Elias's wrist, twisting hard. The knife clattered to the ground.

Elias grunted, but his eyes remained cold, calculating.

"You're strong," he admitted. "Stronger than I thought."

Carrick held him in a chokehold, his grip tightening. "Then let me make you a deal, Kane."

Elias smirked despite the pressure on his throat. "I'm listening."

"You work for me now," Carrick said. "Forget the contract. Forget the money. Join me, and I'll offer you something better."

Elias raised an eyebrow. "And that is?"

Carrick leaned in. "A chance to kill without limits. Without rules. A place at the top of the new order I'm creating."

Silence.

Then, Elias laughed.

"You're crazier than I thought, kid," he said. "Fine. You've got my attention. But if you ever show weakness... I'll kill you myself."

Carrick grinned. "Deal."

System Notification

«Ding! Elias Kane has joined the Zenith Family.»

«Reward Unlocked: Combat Skill – Predator's Instinct.»

Carrick exhaled, wiping blood from his lip. He had won.

The Gale family had sent an assassin.

Instead, Carrick had recruited a monster.

And this was just the beginning.

Chapter 14

Carrick watched as Elias Kane rolled his shoulder, testing his wound. The assassin's sharp blue eyes locked onto him, a mixture of amusement and intrigue flickering behind them.

"I hope you know what you're doing, kid," Elias said, wiping the blood off his knife before tucking it back into his belt.

Carrick smirked. "I always do."

Elias chuckled, shaking his head. "Cocky. You remind me of someone I used to know... until I killed him."

Carrick's smirk didn't waver. "Good thing I don't plan on dying anytime soon."

Elias shrugged. "We'll see."

The warehouse was silent, the scent of oil and blood thick in the air. The fight had been intense, but Carrick had gotten what he wanted. He had recruited one of the deadliest assassins alive.

Now, it was time to set his next move.

He turned to Kasper, who had been watching from the shadows. "Find out where Domino is right now. I need to know every step he takes."

Kasper exhaled a cloud of smoke, his sharp gaze never leaving Carrick's. "You're not wasting time, huh?"

Carrick shook his head. "Domino made the first move. I'm just finishing the game."

Kasper smirked. "I like your style. I'll have the intel by morning." He flicked his cigarette away and disappeared into the night.

Elias cracked his neck. "So what's next, boss?"

Carrick eyed him carefully. The assassin had agreed to work with him, but he knew Elias wasn't loyal-not yet. He was testing him, waiting to see if Carrick was truly worth following.

"Next," Carrick said, slipping his hands into his pockets, "we send a message."

Elias raised an eyebrow. "To Domino?"

Carrick shook his head. "To everyone."

Three Hours Later.

The Black Lotus Casino was one of the Gale family's largest money-laundering fronts. Located in the heart of the city, it was a high-end establishment, filled with politicians, businessmen, and criminals alike.

And tonight, it was about to become a battleground.

Carrick stepped out of a sleek black car, adjusting the cuffs of his suit. Elias stood beside him, now cleaned up and dressed in all black, blending into the night.

"Bold move, hitting one of Domino's key assets," Elias murmured.

Carrick smirked. "That's the point."

The two men strode toward the entrance, passing by a pair of heavily armed guards. The moment they stepped inside, Carrick's presence turned heads.

Whispers spread. People recognized him.

The dead son of the Gale family had returned.

A pit boss, an older man with a scar across his cheek, approached with a nervous smile. "Mr. Carrick, I wasn't expecting you tonight."

Carrick smiled. "Neither was Domino when he put a hit on me. Imagine his surprise when he finds out I'm still alive."

The pit boss paled. "I... I don't know what you mean, sir."

Elias scoffed. "Save the act. We know this place is Domino's piggy bank."

Carrick stepped closer, lowering his voice. "Tonight, it belongs to me."

The pit boss swallowed hard. "Sir, you can't just,"

Before he could finish, Elias stabbed his knife into the man's hand, pinning it to the table. The pit boss let out a strangled scream.

The casino went silent.

Carrick leaned in, his voice calm. "I can. And I will."

He turned to the stunned guards. "You have two options. Swear loyalty to me, or walk away and never come back."

One of the guards hesitated, glancing at the pit boss. The other immediately dropped his weapon. "I'm in."

The first guard followed suit a moment later. "I... I'll work for you."

Carrick nodded. "Smart choice."

Elias yanked the knife out of the pit boss's hand, letting him collapse to the floor.

"You.." Carrick pointed at the wounded man. "..go tell Domino what happened here. Tell him his empire is crumbling."

The pit boss clutched his bleeding hand, nodding frantically before scrambling away.

Carrick exhaled, taking in the casino floor. His first territory.

Elias smirked. "That was fun."

Carrick grinned. "We're just getting started."

Meanwhile.. The Gale Family Estate

Domino Gale slammed his fist against the marble desk, his face twisted in rage. "HE DID WHAT?"

The pit boss knelt before him, his injured hand wrapped in bloodied bandages. "Carrick took the casino, sir. He... he made the guards swear loyalty to him."

Domino's breathing was heavy. His dead brother had just stolen one of his most profitable businesses.

Zachary Gale, their father, sat calmly in his chair, swirling a glass of whiskey. "I warned you, Domino. You should have handled him yourself."

Domino clenched his jaw. "I did handle it. I hired the best assassin money could buy!"

Zachary smirked. "And yet, Carrick is still breathing. Interesting."

Domino slammed his hands on the desk. "I want him dead. I don't care how much it costs!"

Zachary exhaled slowly. "No. Killing him now would be a mistake."

Domino turned sharply. "What?"

Zachary stood, his gaze cold. "Your brother just did something remarkable. He stole from you. And now, everyone in the underworld is watching."

Domino growled. "So what?!"

Zachary stepped forward. "So now, we wait. We let Carrick rise a little higher, let him think he's winning. And then..."

A slow smile spread across his face.

"We crush him."

Domino clenched his fists, but nodded. "Fine. But if he takes one more step toward my assets, I'm ending this."

Zachary chuckled. "Oh, Domino... this war has just begun."

Carrick sat in the VIP lounge, sipping whiskey as he watched the casino continue to operate under his control.

Elias leaned against the bar, watching him carefully. "You really think Domino is gonna let this slide?"

Carrick smirked. "Of course not. He's probably losing his mind right now."

Elias chuckled. "You're enjoying this, aren't you?"

Carrick took another sip. "I've been on the receiving end for too long. Now it's my turn to make them suffer."

Elias tilted his head. "So what's next?"

Carrick's eyes darkened.

"Next, we take everything."

Chapter 15

The air inside The Black Lotus Casino buzzed with newfound energy. The staff and guards, once uncertain of their fate, had quickly adapted to their new boss, Carrick Gale.

Seated in the VIP lounge, Carrick surveyed his latest conquest. His fingers tapped idly against his whiskey glass as he listened to Kasper deliver his report.

"The Gale family isn't taking this lightly," Kasper muttered, leaning back in his chair, a cigarette dangling from his lips. "Domino's already mobilizing. Word is, he's tightening security around his other businesses. He knows you're coming."

Carrick smirked. "Good. I want him to know. Let him spend resources guarding what he can't protect."

Elias Kane chuckled from the side. "Damn, kid. You've got balls." He leaned forward, elbows on the table. "But what's the play here? You hit his casino, pissed him off, and now he's going to come at you swinging. Are we gonna wait for that?"

Carrick took a slow sip of whiskey before setting the glass down. "No," he said simply. "We strike first."

Elias raised an eyebrow. "Where?"

Carrick tossed a file onto the table. Kasper picked it up, flipping through the pages, before letting out a low whistle. "The Iron Fang Warehouse? That's one of Domino's biggest weapon storage facilities."

Carrick nodded. "If we take it, we cripple his firepower. No weapons, no war."

Elias let out a short laugh. "And here I thought this would be boring."

Carrick's gaze hardened. "It's time we remind the Gale family what happens when they try to bury me."

*

Midnight.

The warehouse loomed in the darkness, surrounded by high fences and patrolling guards armed to the teeth. Floodlights illuminated the perimeter, and cameras monitored every corner.

Carrick, Elias, and a team of KWE mercenaries watched from a nearby rooftop.

Elias adjusted the scope on his silenced rifle. "Tight security. Domino wasn't kidding around."

Carrick smirked. "Makes it more fun."

Beside him, Lila, his newly recruited sniper, set up her rifle. "I have a clear shot on the two guards by the gate."

Carrick nodded. "Take them."

Lila inhaled sharply, then..

Pfft. Pfft.

Two bodies crumpled to the ground before anyone inside the warehouse could react.

Carrick turned to the rest of the team. "Move in."

Like shadows, the mercenaries slipped through the darkness. Jack Harris, the seasoned veteran, led the ground team, taking out another guard with a quick blade to the throat.

Carrick and Elias followed close behind, moving toward the warehouse entrance.

As they reached the doors, Kasper's voice came through the earpiece. "We've got movement inside. Heat signatures indicate at least twenty hostiles."

Elias grinned. "Twenty? That's it?"

Carrick pulled out his pistol. "Let's make it zero."

Inside the Warehouse..

The moment Carrick and his team entered, chaos erupted.

Gunfire rang out as the guards inside realized they were under attack. Bullets whizzed past Carrick as he dived behind a stack of crates.

Elias, unfazed, snapped off precise shots, dropping enemies one after another.

Jack and his men moved through the warehouse like a well-oiled machine, eliminating guards with ruthless efficiency.

Carrick spotted a large man wielding a shotgun taking cover behind a forklift.

He moved fast. Rolling out of cover, he fired three precise shots..

Bang! Bang! Bang!

The guard's body slumped against the forklift.

Kasper's voice crackled in the earpiece. "Two more coming from the left."

Lila's sniper rifle answered before Carrick even turned.

Pfft. Pfft.

Two more bodies hit the ground.

Elias whistled. "Damn, I like her."

Carrick didn't respond. He was already moving toward the main storage area.

The warehouse was a treasure trove of high-grade weapons, assault rifles, explosives, and military-grade equipment.

This wasn't just a warehouse. It was a war chest.

Jack inspected a crate, whistling lowly. "Domino really stocked up for a war, huh?"

Carrick smirked. "Too bad he won't get to use any of it."

He turned to Elias. "Blow it all."

Elias grinned like a kid in a candy store. "Now we're talking."

Within minutes, C4 explosives were planted around the warehouse. The team gathered at the exit as Elias held up the detonator.

Carrick took one last look at the weapons before giving the nod.

Boom!

The explosion lit up the night sky as the warehouse went up in flames.

Carrick watched the inferno, his expression unreadable.

Elias clapped him on the back. "That's one hell of a message."

Carrick's voice was cold. "Domino will get the message loud and clear."

*

Domino stood frozen as the news came in. His jaw clenched, rage boiling beneath his skin.

"He took Iron Fang?" His voice was low, dangerous.

The informant trembled. "Y-yes, sir. The warehouse is completely destroyed."

Domino's hands shook with fury. "That little bastard..."

Zachary Gale, seated across the room, took a slow sip of whiskey. "I told you he'd come for more."

Domino spun around. "And you just let it happen?"

Zachary sighed. "I let it happen because it's not over yet."

Domino slammed his fist into the wall. "Then what's the next move?!"

Zachary smiled, setting down his glass.

"We set a trap."

Domino's eyes darkened. "What kind of trap?"

Zachary leaned forward. "Carrick wants to take everything from us. Let's give him something he can't resist... and crush him when he comes for it."

Domino's lips curled into a wicked grin. "I like the sound of that."

Back at the Black Lotus Casino

Carrick stood on the rooftop, the city skyline stretching out before him.

Elias joined him, lighting a cigarette. "So, what's next?"

Carrick's eyes burned with determination.

"Next, we take the Gale family's beating heart."

Elias raised an eyebrow. "You mean..?"

Carrick smirked.

"We're going after their money."
