Betrayer Pays the Price Chapter 1

The morning sun cast long shadows across Oakridge Elementary's parking lot as I checked my watch for the third time. Payton's first day of school was running late, and I needed to make sure everything was perfect for her big day.

"Mommy, do I look okay?" Payton tugged at her new uniform, her eyes bright with nervous excitement.

"Perfect, sweetheart." I smoothed her hair and straightened her little collar. "You're going to have the best first day ever."

As we approached the school entrance, a familiar sleek black shape caught my eye—my Tesla. The car I'd specifically told Miles not to touch this morning since I needed it for Payton's special day.

My stomach tightened as I saw him standing beside it, one hand resting possessively on the door handle. But it wasn't Miles who made me stop dead in my tracks—it was the woman leaning against the car as if she owned it.

Giana Lawrence. Her son Reece stood beside her, wearing a private school uniform that probably cost more than most people's monthly rent.

"Payton!" Principal Foster called, waving us over. "We're just about to start the welcome ceremony."

I forced a smile, keeping my hand firmly on Payton's shoulder as we approached the small crowd of parents and teachers. Miles's eyes met mine briefly before sliding away, a smirk playing at the corner of his mouth.

"Everyone," Miles announced, his voice carrying across the gathering, "I'd like you to meet my wife, Giana."

The world seemed to slow down as Giana stepped forward, her red lips curving into a triumphant smile.

"Mrs. Johnson and I are so excited for Reece's first day," Miles continued, placing his hand on Giana's lower back.

Payton's small hand tightened around mine. "Mommy," she whispered, "why is Daddy calling that lady Mrs. Johnson?"

Before I could answer, Principal Foster turned to me with a confused expression. "And you are...?"

"Just the nanny," Miles cut in smoothly. "Stephanie helps with Payton sometimes."

The blood rushed to my face as several parents exchanged glances. Giana's smile widened as she leaned into Miles.

"Well, it's lovely to meet you all," I said, my voice steadier than I felt. "I should get Payton to her class."

"No need," Miles said, his tone dripping with false warmth. "Giana and I can handle it. You should probably head home."

I felt something inside me snap. Not in anger—in clarity.

"Actually," I said quietly, "I think we need to talk about this."

Miles's laugh was sharp and dismissive. "There's nothing to talk about. You're just the gold digger who couldn't let go."

The crowd fell silent. Even the children stopped fidgeting.

"What did you just say?" My voice was barely above a whisper.

"You heard me." Miles's face hardened as he stepped closer. "Everyone knows what you really are—a crazy woman who trapped me into marriage. Giana is my real wife in every way that matters."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out my car keys—my Tesla keys—and dangled them in front of me.

"Oops," he said with mock concern. "Looks like you won't be needing these anymore."

With deliberate slowness, he bent the metal back and forth until the plastic casing cracked. Then he dropped the broken pieces at my feet.

"Giana is the mother of my son," he declared, gesturing to Reece. "She's the one who deserves respect, not some opportunistic—"

"That's enough."

My voice cut through his tirade like a blade. The crowd of parents and teachers stared at me, some with pity, others with barely concealed amusement.

I reached into my purse and pulled out my phone, my fingers steady despite the rage building inside me.

"Richard? It's Stephanie." I spoke clearly into the phone. "I need you at Oakridge Elementary immediately. We have a defamation situation that requires your attention."

A murmur rippled through the crowd. Principal Foster's eyebrows shot up.

"Who's Richard?" Miles sneered, but there was a flicker of uncertainty in his eyes.

I ended the call and slipped the phone back into my purse before answering.

"Richard Chen," I said calmly. "Chief legal counsel for Prestige Corporation."

The name hung in the air for a moment before recognition dawned on Miles's face.

"Prestige?" he stammered. "What does that have to do with—"

"I'll let him explain everything when he arrives," I interrupted, my voice cool and precise. "In the meantime, I suggest you reconsider your position, Miles."

Giana stepped forward, her perfectly manicured hand gripping Miles's arm. "What is she talking about?"

I smiled—the kind of smile that never reached my eyes. "Exactly what I said. Richard will be here shortly to handle the legal aspects of this... situation."

As if on cue, a sleek black Bentley pulled into the parking lot, and Richard Chen stepped out, his tailored suit and confident demeanor commanding immediate attention.

"Stephanie," he called, making his way through the now-silent crowd. "I understand we have work to do."
