Betrayed by My Fated Mate Chapter 1

The Blue Moon hung heavy and luminous in the night sky, casting silver light across the ceremonial grounds. I stood before the full-length mirror in my chambers, smoothing down the white silk dress my mother had commissioned months ago for this exact moment. The fabric clung to my curves, elegant and pure—the perfect dress for a Luna-to-be.

My wolf stirred restlessly beneath my skin, practically purring with anticipation. Tonight. Finally, tonight.

"You look beautiful, sweetheart," my father said from the doorway, his Alpha presence filling the room with warmth. Marcus Patterson, leader of the Crescent Moon Pack, looked at me with such pride that my chest tightened.

"Do you think he'll finally do it?" I whispered, hating how vulnerable I sounded. "Mark me?"

Dad's expression softened. "The mate bond doesn't lie, Chloe. Landon is your Fated Mate. The Moon Goddess chose you for each other."

I nodded, trying to ignore the nagging doubt that had been growing these past weeks. Landon had been so distant lately. And Jesiah, Rhodes, Onyx—the four men who'd been my protectors, my friends, my family since that terrible night in the woods—they'd all pulled away. Cold shoulders. Clipped responses. Eyes that wouldn't quite meet mine.

But tonight would change everything. The Blue Moon Mating Ceremony was sacred. Binding. Once Landon marked me in front of the assembled packs, I would finally be his Luna. We would finally be whole.

The ceremonial grounds blazed with torches when we arrived. Visiting Alphas from up and down the East Coast had gathered to witness the mating of two powerful bloodlines. I felt their eyes on me as I walked through the crowd, my father's steady presence at my side.

Then I saw him. Landon stood on the raised dais, magnificent in his formal Alpha attire. His dark hair was swept back, his jaw set with determination. Jesiah, Rhodes, and Onyx flanked him like sentinels, their expressions unreadable.

My wolf surged forward, recognizing her mate. The bond thrummed between us, electric and undeniable. I could feel it pulling me toward him, a golden thread connecting our souls.

This was it. This was everything I'd dreamed of since I was old enough to understand what Fated Mates meant.

I climbed the steps to the dais, my heart hammering. Landon's eyes finally met mine, and for just a moment, I saw something flicker there—pain? Regret? But then his expression hardened into something cold and resolute.

"Chloe Patterson," he said, his voice carrying across the silent crowd. "Daughter of Alpha Marcus Patterson."

I smiled, reaching for his hand. The mate bond sang between us, urging us together.

He stepped back.

"I, Landon Pierce, future Alpha of the Crescent Moon Pack, hereby reject the archaic concept of Fated Mates."

The words hit me like a physical blow. The crowd gasped. My wolf howled in confusion and pain.

"What?" The word came out broken, barely audible.

"The old ways are outdated," Landon continued, his Alpha tone making every word a command that reverberated through my bones. "We choose our own path. We protect those who truly need us—the fragile souls who cannot protect themselves."

Jesiah stepped forward. "We stand with our Alpha in this decision."

"For the good of the pack," Rhodes added, his tactical mind reducing my devastation to a strategic calculation.

"For Faye," Onyx finished, and that name—that name—felt like silver burning through my veins.

Faye O'Brien. The wolfless she-wolf they'd been fawning over for months. The one they called their savior.

I stood there, frozen on the dais, in my white dress meant for a mating ceremony, while four hundred wolves watched the Alpha's daughter get publicly rejected by her Fated Mate. Humiliation crashed over me in waves. My wolf whimpered, confused and hurt, not understanding why our mate was pushing us away.

The whispers started immediately. Sneers and pitying looks from visiting packs. My father's hand on my shoulder was the only thing keeping me upright.

Then the alarm bells shattered the night.

"Rogues at the eastern border!" someone shouted.

Landon's head snapped up, his Alpha instincts overriding everything else. "Rhodes, Onyx, with me. Jesiah, secure the grounds."

He leaped from the dais without a backward glance at me, shifting mid-air into his massive wolf form. The patrol thundered after him into the darkness.

I stood alone in my white dress under the mocking Blue Moon, my world shattered into pieces I didn't know how to put back together.

Two hours later, they brought Landon back on a stretcher, his body torn and bloodied, barely clinging to life. And despite everything—despite the rejection, the humiliation, the pain—my wolf surged forward with one desperate thought:

Save him. Save our mate.
