Betrayed by My Boyfriend, Married to the Billionaire CEO Chapter 1

Adalyn Foster carefully placed the last candle in the center of the dining table. Its gentle flame flickered, casting a warm, hopeful glow in her hazel eyes. Tonight was the five-year anniversary of the day she and her boyfriend, Eden, had become a couple — exactly five years since they had started dating.

She smoothed a non-existent wrinkle on her dress, her gaze drifting to the small, exquisitely wrapped blue box on the sofa. Inside rested a pair of silver cufflinks she had saved up three months to buy—a subtle token of support for his recent promotion.

The clock on the wall ticked past eight. He was half an hour late. A familiar, tiny knot of anxiety tightened in her stomach. She picked up her phone to text him, then put it down. She didn't want to be that kind of girlfriend.

A key turned in the lock. Adalyn shot to her feet, a wide smile erasing all her unease.

Her boyfriend, Eden, a project manager at a mid‑sized investment firm, stumbled in, smelling of exhaustion and stale liquor. His eyes widened slightly at the sight of the candlelit dinner. "Wow, Addy. You went all out. Oh, wait — is today something special? I completely forgot it's our five‑year anniversary. "

Her smile froze for a fraction of a second. He had forgotten.

He tossed his coat onto the sofa, his phone slipping from the pocket and falling between the cushions. "Gotta take a shower," he mumbled, heading for the bathroom. "Rough day." He didn't notice the disappointment clouding her face.

On the sofa, Eden's phone screen lit up, a stark blue in the dim room. A name glowed: Bambi Steele, followed by a deer emoji. Adalyn's heart skipped a beat. Bambi. The "talented but fragile" intern Eden often mentioned.

The screen went dark, then lit up again. Same name. Adalyn forced herself to look away. It lit up a third time. A message preview hovered on the lock screen: "Eden, honey, are you home yet? Still thinking about what you said in the car..."

Adalyn's breath caught in her throat. The word was a physical blow. Her fingers were cold, trembling as she reached for the phone. Her mind was a warzone. Respect his privacy. A louder voice screamed, You need to know.

She typed in a familiar sequence of numbers. Her birthday. The screen unlocked immediately.

She opened the message thread with Bambi. The words and images flooded her vision, sucking the air from her lungs. A selfie of Bambi in a low-cut dress, the background unmistakably Eden's office sofa.

Eden's reply: "You looked incredible today, Bambi. Like a lost fawn. Makes a man want to protect you."

She scrolled up, her thumb moving mechanically through weeks of late-night conversations. They talked about art, about life, about being "soulmates."

"Addy is great," Eden had written. "But she doesn't get me. It's more like we're family now."

Bambi's reply: "I get you. I feel like we're the same kind of person."

A wave of nausea washed over Adalyn. She kept scrolling, drawn to the final, fatal blow sent just an hour ago.

Bambi: "Do you love her?"

Eden: "I don't know. I just know that when I'm with you, I feel alive. Sometimes I think the connection my soul has with yours is more real than my five years with her."

The world went black for a second. The phone slipped from her numb fingers, landing softly on the carpet.

The shower water stopped. "Addy? You out there?" Eden's voice called out.

Slowly, Adalyn bent down and picked up the phone. She walked to the table and, with her bare fingers, snuffed out the candle. The wick hissed, a final, dying breath. She left the wrapped cufflink box on the table right next to his phone, grabbed her coat and purse, and walked out without a word.

When Eden emerged from the bathroom, a towel wrapped around his waist, he found an empty living room, a table of cold food, and the soft click of the apartment door closing.
