Betrayed by Blood and Bond Chapter 1

Nova's POV

The doorbell rings at the worst possible moment.

Damien has just walked through the front door. He's standing in the dining room doorway looking at the candles, the good dishes, the card at the centre of the table  "Dad," in my handwriting... and something is shifting in his face.

Not his tired end-of-day expression. Something deeper. The look he gets when the world surprises him gently, when he forgot he was still allowed to hope.

"What is all this?" Quiet. Careful.

"Sit down." I'm smiling so hard my face hurts. "I have something wonderful to tell you."

He takes one step toward me.

Then the doorbell rings.

One minute, I tell myself. Just one.

I open the door.

My sister is standing on my doorstep, and my wolf goes still before I can even process why.

Lyra is always beautiful. She walks into rooms like she owns the air inside them... head up, eyes steady, smile already waiting.

She gives me that smile now. Warm. Practised.

The same one she has worn since we were girls stealing fruit from our mother's kitchen. The smile that has never once meant sorry.

But there is a scent underneath her perfume. Familiar in a way that makes my skin feel wrong.

Not dangerous-wrong.

Displaced-wrong.

Like touching something you've held a thousand times and finding it somewhere it was never supposed to be.

My wolf presses against my ribs and says nothing.

Just watches.

I should pay attention to that.

I don't.

"Hey. Sorry to just show up. Can I come in? I need to talk to you."

This is my sister. My blood.

I push the feeling aside and step back.

"Of course."

I should tell you what today was, before it became this.

Four hours ago, a doctor said four words and my world quietly shifted.

You are pregnant. Congratulations.

Two years of silence at dinner tables.

Two years of Damien setting down negative tests like fragile things, saying nothing because there was nothing left to say.

The pack whispering behind cupped hands... the Beta's mate is barren, maybe the moon chose wrong.

I heard it at every gathering.

I swallowed it every time.

And lately there had been something else to swallow too... rumours, half-heard things at the edges of pack gatherings.

My father's name mentioned in the same breath as the Council. Words like petition and bloodline and irregular bond.

The kind of talk I told myself was gossip.

The kind I was too careful to ask about directly, because part of me already knew I wouldn't like the answer.

But today there had been a heartbeat.

Small. Impossible. Real.

I drove home with the windows down even though it was cold.

I spent the afternoon making everything perfect...  his favourite meal, tall white candles, the wedding gift dishes we almost never use.

And one small white card at the centre of the table.

Dad.

That was today.

Before the doorbell.

Now Lyra is inside my house, and my wolf is no longer warm.

She sees Damien across the room.

Something moves across her face... fast, controlled, gone before most people would catch it.

But I have been reading my sister's face since before I could read words.

I know that look.

I have watched it appear at every pack gathering for six years... the sharp sideways glance she thinks nobody notices.

The way her chin lifts when she looks at him, like a woman measuring something she believes was always hers.

I always told myself I was imagining it.

"Hey, Damien."

"Lyra." His voice is easy. Family-easy.

But his jaw is tight.

A small thing. The kind only a mate would notice.

Something cold turns over in my chest.

I take Lyra to the sitting room and close the door.

She stands in the middle of the floor and does not sit.

The practised smile is gone.

What has replaced it has been living behind her eyes for a long time... finally too heavy to hold back.

Something almost like grief.

And beneath it, something fiercer.

The look of a woman who has decided she has waited long enough.

"Lyra." My voice comes out softer than I want. "Just say it."

She looks at the floor.

Takes one breath.

Forces herself to meet my eyes.

And slowly... like a woman carrying something she can no longer hold alone... she raises her hand and places it against the curve of her stomach.

Small. Round. Unmistakable.

The world tilts.

My wolf rises so fast I almost choke on her.

Heat floods my skin.

My nails sharpen against my palms... small, hot points of pain I welcome because they are the only real thing in the room right now.

The space becomes too loud... Lyra's heartbeat, the candle flames in the next room eating air, the blood moving through my own ears.

And that scent... the wrong scent I have been swallowing since the doorstep... splits open in my nose and becomes one word.

Mate.

My mate's scent. On my sister's skin. Inside my sister's belly.

I bite down on the inside of my cheek until I taste blood.

The pain drags my wolf back just far enough to keep her behind my teeth.

Just far enough to keep me standing.

"Who?"

One word. Almost no sound.

Lyra's eyes fill.

She gives me silence... the careful kind. The cowardly kind.

For just a second, her face breaks.

Not the composed woman who walked through my door... just my sister.

The girl who climbed into my bed during thunderstorms.

The one who held my hand at our grandmother's funeral and didn't let go for an hour.

Her chin trembles... once, only once... and something in her eyes looks almost like an apology.

Like she has spent a long time learning to live with what she's about to do, and she is not as at peace with it as she wants me to believe.

Then she swallows.

Her shoulders pull back.

And it is gone.

What stands in her place is older. Harder.

The daughter of an Elder, finally remembering exactly who she is.

"He was never yours to keep, Nova." Soft. Almost kind.

The worst kind of cruelty... the kind delivered gently.

"Father petitioned the Council two years ago. They agree... the bond was irregular. A Beta mated outside the bloodline weakens the whole pack. The Alpha knows. Everyone knows."

A pause... deliberate, precise, like a blade finding the exact right spot.

"I'm not destroying your marriage. I'm correcting a mistake the moon made six years ago."

Two years ago.

The same two years I spent watching Damien hold negative tests like fragile things.

Something closes inside me.

Final and absolute.

Like a lock turning in a door that will never open again.

"Go home, Lyra."

"Nova, please... just let me expl..."

"Go home."

She goes.

I close the front door and stand with my hand still on the handle.

Five slow breaths.

My hands are not shaking.

I expected them to.

They don't.

The house smells like candle wax and his favourite meal.

A whole evening I built with my own hands for a man who has been living a secret inside our walls.

I think about the card on the table.

I think about the heartbeat I listened to this morning... that small, impossibly fast flutter... and how I sat in my car afterward and cried because I was so happy.

Because I thought everything was finally starting.

I press my forehead against the door.

Ten seconds.

I give myself exactly ten.

Ten seconds to grieve the evening I planned, the candles still burning in the next room, the card that will never be read the way I imagined.

Then I straighten.

I breathe.

And I walk back down the hall.

I pick up the card... "Dad," in my own handwriting... and place it face-down on the table.

The candles are still burning.

The food still warm.

The world completely unbothered by what just ended in the sitting room.

Damien appears in the doorway.

"Nova? What did she want?"

He walks in, looks at my face, and stops smiling.

"How long have you been sleeping with my sister?"

The silence is the longest of my life.

The candle flames do not move.

And then... slowly, like a man watching the ground open beneath his feet... his face changes.

Not into denial.

Not into anger.

Into something that looks almost like relief.

Like a man who has been holding something underwater for a very long time, and his arms have finally given out.

That look destroys me more than any lie could have.

"How long, Damien?"

"Nova." His voice breaks on my name. "There are things you don't know. Things I should have told you... I wanted to, I just..."

He stops.

Runs a hand over his face.

When he looks up, his eyes are not the eyes of a guilty man.

They are the eyes of a man who has been outmaneuvered, backed into a corner by people far more patient than him.

"Your father went to the Alpha. There are formal proceedings... they're trying to have the bond declared void. Not just our marriage. The bond. And if they succeed..."

"Don't."

I reach across the table and blow out the candle.

One small, deliberate act.

The room dims.

"Don't use my name to soften it."

"Five minutes."

Something in his face sharpens... not guilt, but urgency.

The face he wears when a negotiation is about to collapse and he is the only one who sees it.

"There are things about Lyra you don't know. About what she agreed to give them, who she has been talking to, how long this has been planned. You don't have the full picture, and I need you to hear me before you walk out that door."

I stop with my keys in my hand.

Because that is not the voice of a man making excuses.

That is the voice of a man who is afraid... not for himself.

For me.

I turn slowly.

"Then talk."

He opens his mouth.

His phone buzzes on the counter.

One notification.

He doesn't move to check it... but I can see the screen from where I stand.

A message.

From Lyra.

Don't tell her yet. She's not ready.

The air changes.

Everything changes.

I look at Damien.

He looks at me.

And in the space between us I see it clearly... not a guilty man, not a stranger, but something far worse.

A man who made a terrible choice to protect something.

A man who has been on the wrong side of a plan that was never his, running out of time to fix what he should have broken the moment it began.

"Nova, listen..."

I walk out.

Because I am done learning things on other people's schedules.

Done waiting to be told how much truth I deserve.

Done being the last person in my own pack to understand what is happening to my own life.

I step into the cold night.

My wolf is wide awake.

Sharp. Ready.

Behind me, through the closing door, I hear his voice one last time... low, urgent, stripped of everything except fear.

"If you leave right now, you are walking straight into what they want. Nova... don't go to her. Whatever Lyra told you to do next... don't."

I keep walking.

But my steps slow.

Because I had not told Damien where I was going.

I hadn't told anyone.

So how does he already know?
