Beneath The Midnight Mask Chapter 1

The first thing Aria Bennett noticed about the dress was that it was impossible to breathe in.

The second thing she noticed was that Lila Morgan was smiling like someone who had successfully committed a crime and was waiting to see if she would get away with it.

“Don't look at me like that,” Lila said, adjusting the strap of Aria's silver gown before stepping back to admire her work. “That expression is exactly why I knew you needed this.”

Aria looked at herself in the full-length mirror, then looked at Lila through the reflection with a flat stare.

“You tricked me into wearing a dress I cannot sit comfortably in, borrowed a designer mask I am terrified of breaking, and somehow convinced me that attending a billionaire's masquerade party is a reasonable way to spend my Saturday night.”

Lila placed a hand over her chest, pretending to be offended. “First of all, I did not trick you. I persuaded you with friendship, emotional manipulation, and several reminders that you have not had a proper social life since you graduated.”

“That sounds exactly like tricking me.”

“No, tricking you would have been telling you we were going for dinner and secretly bringing you here.” Lila tilted her head. “Which, now that I think about it, would have worked.”

Aria narrowed her eyes. “You are enjoying this too much.”

“Of course I am.” Lila grinned as she picked up the delicate black mask resting on the table. “Do you know how many people would kill for an invitation to the Midnight Masked Gala?”

“People who enjoy standing in rooms full of strangers pretending they are not judging each other?”

“People who understand opportunities when they see them.”

Aria sighed, but the corner of her mouth twitched slightly.

That was Lila's greatest talent. She could turn any argument into something that sounded almost reasonable.

“I still don't understand why you think I need this,” Aria said, reaching for her earrings. “I’ll resume my new job next week. I should probably be reviewing company information, not attending a party where everyone is wearing enough jewelry to buy a small apartment.”

Lila leaned against the vanity table, watching her carefully. “And that is exactly why you need this.”

Aria paused. “What does that mean?”

“It means you spend your entire life preparing for the next responsibility.” Lila's voice softened as she crossed her arms. “You finished school, you fought to get this position, and now you are already stressing about being the perfect employee before you have even stepped into the building.”

Aria looked away because unfortunately, Lila knew her too well. She had always been the person who made lists before making decisions, who planned three steps ahead, who worried about problems that had not happened yet.

Lila walked closer and placed the mask in Aria's hands. “Tonight is not about work. It is not about proving yourself. It is just one night where nobody knows you.”

Aria looked down at the mask. Nobody knows you.

The idea was strangely appealing.

No expectations. No pressure and no one asking about her achievements, her career plans, or what she intended to do next. Just a night where she could disappear.

Lila smiled when she noticed her hesitation. “Also,” she added casually, “you could meet your soulmate.”

Aria immediately looked up. “My soulmate?”

“Yes.”

“At a masked gala where I am not allowed to know his name?”

Lila shrugged. “Very romantic, mysterious, and dramatic.”

“That sounds like the beginning of a terrible decision.”

“It sounds like the beginning of a romance novel.”

Aria laughed despite herself. “You read too many romance books.”

“And you don't read enough.”

Lila stepped behind her and carefully placed the mask over Aria's face. “There. You look stunning."

Aria touched the edge of the mask, still unconvinced. “What if I hate it?”

“Then you leave.”

“What if everyone is intimidating?”

“Then you remember you are smarter than half the people in that room.”

“What if someone tries to talk to me?”

Lila smiled. “That is usually how conversations work, Aria.”

Aria rolled her eyes. “You know what I mean.”

“I do.” Lila's expression softened. “But maybe someone will surprise you.”

Aria wanted to argue. She really did. But deep down, she knew Lila wasn't trying to force her into a party. She was trying to remind her that life was not only made up of responsibilities. Sometimes, it was allowed to be unexpected.

***

The Ashford Global Midnight Masked Gala looked exactly like something Aria had only seen in movies.

The grand entrance alone made her feel like she had accidentally walked into someone else's life.

Crystal chandeliers hung from the ceiling, reflecting against polished marble floors. Guests moved through the ballroom in elegant gowns and perfectly tailored suits, their masks hiding familiar faces and famous names.

Everyone looked wealthy.

Aria immediately felt like the exception..She tightened her fingers around her invitation.

Guest Number 47.

That was her identity for the night..Not Aria Bennett. Not the woman trying to prove herself in a competitive world.

The rules were printed clearly on the invitation. You don't ask for your partner’s name, no personal questions, and no unmasking until midnight. The entire purpose of the event was anonymity.

The city's wealthiest families, executives, and heirs gathered every year to meet without reputation or status influencing their first impression.

At least, that was the idea.

Aria suspected everyone still knew exactly who everyone else was. She accepted a glass of champagne from a passing server but barely touched it.

“One hour,” she whispered to herself.

She could survive one hour. Then she would go home, sleep, and pretend this never happened..She moved toward a quieter corner of the ballroom, relieved to escape the crowd.

For a moment, she simply watched the way people laughed and spoke confidently. They carried themselves like they had never questioned whether they belonged somewhere.

Aria wondered what that felt like. To walk into a room and never wonder if you were out of place.

“You look like you're planning your escape route.”

The voice behind her startled her.

Aria turned. A man stood a few feet away, wearing a silver mask that covered the upper half of his face.

Guest Number 18.

She immediately noticed the small details. The way he stood slightly away from the crowd. The relaxed posture that suggested he was comfortable but not seeking attention. The quiet amusement in his voice.

Aria looked around briefly. “Is it that obvious?”

The man glanced toward the ballroom entrance.

“You looked at the door three times in the last minute.”

Her eyebrows lifted. “You were counting?”

“Unfortunately, yes.”

“Unfortunately?”

He gave a small smile. “I have a habit of noticing things.”

Something about the answer made her curious.

Most people would have said something charming.

Something rehearsed but he said it like it was a fact he couldn't help.

Aria looked at his mask. “Are you always this observant?”

“Only when someone is trying very hard to pretend they are enjoying themselves.”

She almost laughed. Instead, she narrowed her eyes. “And what makes you think I'm pretending?”

The man tilted his head slightly. “Because everyone else here is trying to be noticed.” His gaze shifted briefly around the room. “You are the only person trying to hide.”

For some reason, that answer caught her off guard.

Aria opened her mouth, ready with a sarcastic response. But nothing came.

Because Guest Number 18 had somehow noticed something about her that most people never did.

And she had only known him for less than a minute.

The music changed and the crowd moved around them.

Yet somehow, standing there with a stranger whose name she didn't know, Aria no longer felt like leaving.

The man extended his hand. “Guest Number 47,” he said, his voice carrying quiet amusement beneath the mask. “Would you like to spend the next hour pretending this place isn't terrifying with someone who feels exactly the same way?”

Aria stared at his hand. Then at the mysterious man behind the silver mask. She had come here counting the minutes until she could leave. So why was she suddenly wondering what would happen if she didn’t?
