Chapter 5

The run to Sector 4 felt like an eternity for Terra. Her lungs burned, and the cheap boots had rubbed the skin off her heels, leaving hot, stinging blisters. She tasted blood in the back of her throat. But Terra didn't stop.

While Terra ran, keeping her eyes fixed on Zev’s broad back as he cleared a path through the crowded, filthy streets, she aggressively interacted with the Kore AI in her mind. *Open system shop!* she commanded mentally.

The blue translucent screen flashed across her vision. Row upon row of items appeared. Weapons, blueprints, seeds, and medical supplies. Everything was priced in crypto-credits. *Filter by medical. Immediate trauma stabilization.*

The list narrowed. Her eyes darted to the top item.

[Advanced Medical Nano-gel]

Description: Instant cellular repair and hydration stabilization for severe organ degradation. Specifically effective for aquatic bio-forms experiencing desiccation.

Price: 450 Crypto-credits.

It was extortionate. It would drain almost all her starting funds. But Terra had zero choice. She couldn't buy food or shelter if she was dead. *Purchase.*

[Transaction Complete. Item stored in System Inventory. You may manifest it at will.]

"We're here," Zev stopped abruptly. Terra slammed into his back, bouncing off his hard muscles. She stumbled backward, gasping for air.

They were standing in front of a massive, decaying industrial warehouse. The metal siding was rusted brown, and the large loading doors were chained shut. Standing in front of the side entrance was a man. He was incredibly tall, easily six foot three, with broad shoulders and lean, predatory muscles. He wore a dark, tailored combat uniform that looked entirely out of place in the slums. His hair was a sharp, icy silver, and his eyes were the color of storm clouds.

Corbin Frye. Asset number three. His bio-form was a predatory avian—a silver falcon. He was arrogant, heavily elitist, and held absolute contempt for everything dirty and weak. Which included Terra.

Corbin looked up as they approached. His silver eyes locked onto Terra. She saw his nostrils flare in disgust as he took in her muddy clothes, wet hair, and the lack of toxic makeup on her face.

"You look like a drowned rat, Mason," Corbin said. His voice was smooth, cultured, but dripping with absolute venom. "What are you doing here? Did the Board finally kick you out of your ivory tower?"

"Move, Corbin," Terra ordered, stepping forward. She didn't have time for his elitist posturing.

Corbin didn't flinch. He crossed his arms and leaned back against the heavy metal door. "No," Corbin said simply. "You told me to guard this door. You told me not to let anyone in, especially not you, until Rhys begged for mercy. He hasn't begged. He hasn't made a sound in two days."

Corbin didn't know. He was guarding the door out of spite, strictly following the original Terra's cruel orders to punish her, refusing to break protocol. He thought Rhys was just being stubborn. He didn't realize Rhys was slipping into an irreversible coma.

"He's not making a sound because he's dying," Terra said, her voice shaking with adrenaline. "Open the door."

Corbin’s eyes narrowed. He looked past Terra to Zev. "Is this a trick?" Corbin asked Zev, ignoring Terra completely. "Did she come up with a new game?"

"Just open the door, Frye," Zev said. His voice was tight, anxious. "If he dies, the feedback loop hits us all."

Corbin’s arrogant facade cracked slightly. He stared at Zev for a second, reading the genuine urgency in the serpent's posture. Without another word, Corbin turned around. He punched a complex code into the rusted keypad next to the door. The heavy metal door clicked and slid open with a loud, grating screech. A blast of hot, incredibly dry air hit Terra’s face. It smelled like dust and copper.

Terra pushed past Corbin, ignoring his glare, and practically threw herself down the dark, concrete stairs leading into the sub-basement. The basement was entirely dark, save for a single flickering yellow bulb hanging from the ceiling. In the center of the room, chained to the concrete floor by heavy, energy-dampening cuffs, was Rhys Donovan.

Terra’s breath caught in her throat. He was beautiful, in a tragic, broken way. His human torso was lean and highly defined, but his skin was a sickly, pale gray. It looked like parchment paper ready to crumble. His lower half was a massive, powerful aquatic tail, covered in iridescent blue scales. But the scales were no longer glowing. They were dull, flaking, and cracked. Deep, bleeding fissures ran along his waist where the human skin met the scales. He was entirely motionless. His chest barely moved.

"Rhys," Terra whispered, dropping to her knees on the hard concrete next to him. The air was so dry Terra’s own eyes stung. She reached out and pressed her fingers to his neck. His skin was terrifyingly hot and completely bone-dry. His pulse was a faint, erratic flutter, like a dying moth.

Corbin and Zev walked up behind Terra. She heard Corbin suck in a sharp breath. "He's... dried out," Corbin said, his cultured voice cracking. "I didn't know. The dampening cuffs suppressed his energy signature. I couldn't sense his decline."

"Get back," Terra ordered sharply. She didn't look at them. She kept her eyes on Rhys's chest.

Terra focused her mind. *Inventory. Manifest Nano-gel.* She reached into the pocket of her jacket. She felt the cold, metallic surface of a small cylinder materialize in her hand. She pulled it out. It was a heavy, military-grade syringe filled with a glowing, bright blue gel. Terra popped the cap off with her thumb.

"What is that?" Zev demanded, stepping forward. His massive hand gripped Terra’s shoulder. "You're not injecting him with more of your chemical trash!"

"It's medical grade nano-gel!" Terra yelled, shaking off his hand. "It will stabilize his cellular hydration! If you stop me, he dies in ten minutes!"

Zev hesitated. His grip loosened. Terra didn't wait for him to make up his mind. She leaned over Rhys. She found the thickest cluster of cracked scales near his waist, where his major arteries ran. Terra pressed the tip of the syringe against his skin and drove the plunger down.

Chapter 6

The thick, glowing blue gel expelled from the syringe, immediately absorbing directly into Rhys’s cracked, gray skin. It didn't pool or drip; his severely dehydrated body drank it in like a sponge in a desert. For three terrifying seconds, absolutely nothing happened. The basement was dead silent, save for Terra’s own ragged breathing.

Then, Rhys violently convulsed. His massive blue tail slapped against the concrete floor with a deafening CRACK. The chains attached to his heavy dampening cuffs snapped taut, grinding against the metal loops bolted into the ground. He gasped. It was a horrific, wet, tearing sound, like a man pulling his head above water after drowning. His chest heaved violently. The sickly gray pallor of his skin immediately began to flush with a deep, furious red as the nano-gel forced his stalled circulatory system back into overdrive.

"Rhys!" Corbin shouted, stepping forward, his silver eyes wide with shock.

Rhys’s eyes snapped open. They were completely black, totally pupil-less, the eyes of a deep-sea predator pushed to the absolute edge of survival. He thrashed wildly, his hands tearing at the heavy cuffs. The chaotic energy in the room spiked. Terra’s skin prickled as the ambient air grew heavy and damp, reacting to his recovering biological frequency.

"Hold him down!" Terra yelled at Zev. "His nervous system is rebooting! He's going to tear his own arms off!"

Zev didn't hesitate. He lunged forward, grabbing Rhys by the shoulders and using his massive strength to pin the thrashing aquatic male to the floor. Terra crawled closer, her knees scraping against the rough concrete. The nano-gel had stabilized his internal organs, but the external damage—the deep, bleeding fissures where his scales met his human skin—was still exposed.

Females were the evolutionary catalysts. Their physical touch carried a biological frequency that soothed and repaired the chaotic energy inside males. Terra didn't fully understand the science yet, but she knew the rule. She reached out and pressed both of her palms flat against his chest, right over his frantically beating heart.

The moment Terra’s skin made contact with his, Rhys let out a sharp, ragged hiss. His entire body arched upward. The violent thrashing stopped instantly. His muscles locked tight, trembling under Terra’s hands. His black eyes lost their predatory glaze, narrowing as they focused entirely on Terra.

Terra could feel his body temperature dropping rapidly under her palms, shifting from a feverish, dying heat to a cool, stable chill. The connection felt bizarre—like plunging her hands into a pool of cool, vibrating water. Without thinking, Terra’s left hand slid downward, moving from his chest to the deep, bleeding cracks along his waistline to apply direct pressure. Her fingers brushed against the soft, highly sensitive webbing at the very base of his lateral fins.

Rhys violently jolted. It wasn't a convulsion of pain. It was a massive, uncontrollable full-body flinch. A deep, guttural groan ripped from his throat, a sound so raw and intensely physical that it made Terra’s own face flush hot. Terra snatched her hand back like she had been burned. In the beast world, the base of a male's ears, wings, or fins were intensely dense nerve clusters. They were extreme erogenous zones, hyper-sensitive to a female's touch. Terra had just casually stroked the equivalent of an exposed, highly charged live wire.

Rhys stared up at Terra. His chest was rising and falling in deep, even rhythms now. The bleeding at his waist had coagulated into a dark, healthy crust. The dull blue of his tail scales was slowly beginning to catch the dim yellow light, regaining a faint iridescence. He looked at Terra’s face, realizing she had no toxic makeup on. He looked at her hands, which were shaking. His expression contorted into a mask of pure, absolute revulsion.

"Don't," Rhys whispered, his voice incredibly hoarse, scratching like sandpaper. "Don't touch me." He pulled away from Terra, dragging his heavy tail across the concrete until his back hit the far wall. He curled his shoulders inward, creating physical distance.

The Kore AI pinged softly in Terra’s mind.

[Notice: Asset 2 (Rhys Donovan) physical status stabilized. Affection metric remains at -99.]

Rhys was alive, but he still hated Terra’s guts. Fair enough. Terra was the one who locked him in here, as far as he was concerned. Before Terra could say anything, the heavy metal door at the top of the stairs banged open. Rapid, frantic footsteps echoed down the concrete steps.

"Rhys! Oh my god, Rhys!" A high-pitched, painfully sweet voice filled the basement.

Terra turned her head. Running down the stairs was a petite, exceptionally beautiful woman. She wore a pristine white dress that looked completely untouched by the slum's filth. Her blonde hair was perfectly styled, and tears were already streaming dramatically down her flawless cheeks.

Sylvie Chandler. The memories flooded Terra’s brain like a toxic spill. Sylvie was the original Terra’s "best friend." She was a lower-tier socialite who had used Terra’s wealth to elevate her own status. More importantly, Sylvie was the one who had manipulated Terra into kidnapping these males in the first place. She had constantly whispered in Terra's ear, telling her she deserved powerful assets, fueling Terra's sadistic tendencies while maintaining a facade of pure innocence herself.

Sylvie reached the bottom of the stairs and immediately gasped, covering her mouth with both hands in a theatrical display of horror. She stared at Terra, then at Rhys huddled against the wall.

"Terra!" Sylvie cried out, her voice trembling with perfectly calibrated outrage. "What are you doing to him?! Haven't you tortured him enough? You're a monster!"

Sylvie rushed past Terra, intentionally shoving her shoulder hard against hers. She threw herself onto the concrete floor next to Rhys, reaching out as if to cradle his face. "Rhys, I'm here," Sylvie cooed, her voice dripping with fake, sugary sympathy. "I came as soon as I heard the Board exiled her. I'm going to save you from this psycho."

Terra sat back on her heels. She wiped the sweat off her forehead with the back of her hand, staring at the absolute audacity unfolding in front of her.

Chapter 7

Sylvie reached her perfectly manicured hands out, aiming to gently cup Rhys’s pale, sweat-slicked face. She leaned in close, ensuring the low cut of her pristine white dress was highly visible. "It's okay, Rhys," Sylvie whispered, projecting her voice just loud enough so Zev and Corbin could hear her benevolence. "I brought clean water. I'll take over your contract. You'll be safe with me."

Rhys didn't move toward Sylvie. He didn't look relieved. His dark, deep-set eyes flicked from Sylvie’s extended hands to Terra's face.

The original Terra Mason would have exploded. She would have screamed, thrown a tantrum, and ordered Zev to rip Sylvie’s hair out for touching her property. Terra didn't do any of that. She slowly stood up. She brushed the rough concrete dust off the knees of her muddy pants. She crossed her arms and looked down at Sylvie.

"Take over his contract?" Terra asked, her voice completely flat and calm. The acoustics of the basement amplified the coldness in her tone. "With what money, Sylvie?"

Sylvie froze. Her hands stopped inches from Rhys’s face. She looked over her shoulder at Terra, her big blue eyes widening in feigned innocence. "I... I have my family's backing," Sylvie stammered slightly, clearly caught off guard by Terra's lack of hysterics. "The Board knows I am a compassionate caregiver. They will transfer his bio-seal to me for a minimal fee."

Terra let out a short, harsh laugh. It wasn't funny. It was deeply cynical. "Compassionate caregiver," Terra repeated, tasting the bile in the words. She took a slow step forward. "That’s hilarious. Considering it was your idea to put him in this basement."

The basement went dead silent. Zev shifted his weight, his heavy combat boots scraping against the floor. Corbin narrowed his silver eyes, staring intensely at Sylvie’s back.

"T-That's a lie!" Sylvie gasped, her face flushing a deep, ugly red. She stood up, spinning to face Terra, playing the ultimate victim. "How dare you! You're trying to blame your sadistic crimes on me because you lost your corporate backing! I told you to treat them gently!"

"Did you?" Terra tilted her head. She walked right up to Sylvie. Terra was three inches taller, and right now, she felt zero need to shrink herself. "Because I clearly remember sitting in the VIP lounge of the Apex Club last Tuesday. You drank my imported wine, and you said, 'Aquatic beasts are too proud, Terra. You have to dry him out for a few days to break his spirit. Then he'll grovel.'"

Terra quoted the memory perfectly. The original Terra had a photographic memory for conversations, a trait that finally proved useful.

Sylvie’s mouth opened, but no sound came out. Panic flashed in her eyes. She glanced nervously at Corbin and Zev, realizing the massive, lethal males in the room were now listening very closely.

"You're crazy," Sylvie spat, her sweet facade cracking. "The toxic energy has rotted your brain!"

Terra ignored Sylvie. She looked past Sylvie's shoulder, directly at Rhys. "She didn't bring any water, Rhys," Terra said quietly. "Look at her hands. Look at her dress. She walked through Sector 4, the filthiest slum in the Enclave, and there isn't a speck of dust on her."

Rhys’s dark eyes slowly moved to assess Sylvie.

"She didn't come here to save you," Terra continued, her voice brutally direct. "She waited until I stabilized your vital signs. She waited outside until the energy spike died down, confirming it was safe. She wants your Level 5 combat output, but she didn't want to risk her own bio-energy field healing a dying mutant."

Every word Terra spoke was a surgical strike against Sylvie's white lotus persona.

Sylvie’s hands balled into tight fists. "Shut up! Rhys, don't listen to this exile! I can give you a clean home! I can give you a warm bed!" Sylvie turned back to Rhys, reaching down to grab his arm.

The moment Sylvie's fingers brushed his skin, Rhys moved. He didn't speak. He just whipped his massive blue tail. The thick, heavy muscles of his aquatic form slammed against the concrete floor, sending a violent splash of the residual blue nano-gel straight up onto Sylvie’s pristine white dress.

"Get away from me," Rhys rasped. His voice was weak, but the absolute disgust in it was undeniable. "Your perfume smells like rotting chemicals."

Sylvie shrieked, jumping backward. She stared down at the glowing blue stain ruining her expensive dress. She looked at Rhys’s cold, rejecting eyes, and then at Corbin, who was now sneering at her with open contempt. Her public performance had utterly collapsed.

"You're all going to rot down here!" Sylvie screamed, her face twisting into something ugly and hateful. "The Board will starve you out! You'll be begging me for a crust of bread by tomorrow!"

She turned and ran up the concrete stairs, her high heels clicking frantically as she fled the basement. The heavy door slammed shut behind her.

Terra let out a long, exhausted breath. Her shoulders slumped. The adrenaline crash hit her like a brick wall.

DING.

[Notice: Asset 2 (Rhys Donovan) Trust Metric increased by 2 points. Current Trust: 2.]

Terra blinked, looking at the blue screen flashing in her vision. Two points. It wasn't much. It was barely a drop in the ocean. But it wasn't zero anymore.

Terra looked back down at Rhys. He was staring at the floor, his breathing steady, his chest rising and falling rhythmically.

"Corbin," Terra said, her voice heavy with exhaustion. "Unlock his dampening cuffs."

Corbin didn't argue this time. He stepped forward, pulling a heavy, magnetic key-card from his uniform pocket.
