I had one job at Damon Blackwood’s Alpha Ceremony: wait until the boy I’d loved for two years finally said my name.
He’d promised me he would.
Instead, Damon walked onto the platform and held out his hand to my sister, Vanessa.
“Vanessa will stand beside me as my future Luna.”
For one stupid second, I told myself it was politics. A temporary arrangement. Something he would explain.
Then our mate scents collided across the room.
Everyone smelled it.
Vanessa went still. My parents stared at me. Damon looked straight at the Omega he’d hidden for months and said, “Whatever Lena and I had is over.”
He hadn’t missed the bond. He had chosen over it.
So I crossed the room, placed his Alpha pendant back in his palm, and stepped out of the place he’d saved for me.
By the time Damon followed, I was already emailing Ravencrest Academy.
He chose my sister in public.
He was about to find out what losing me looked like.

POV: Lena Parker
The Blackwood pendant rested against my collarbone like a promise I had worn too long.
I kept one hand over the silver disk beneath the neckline of my dress while three hundred members of the Blackridge Pack filled the ceremonial hall. Crystal chandeliers burned above us. Black-and-crimson banners hung from the rafters. Every conversation carried the same excited question.
Who would Damon Blackwood name as Luna tonight?
I already knew the answer.
At least, I thought I did.
Two years ago, Damon had pressed the pendant into my palm beneath the willow behind the packhouse. He had been twenty-two then, still fighting for the council votes that would secure his place as Alpha. I could still hear his voice.
"Wait for me, Lena. When the title is mine, I won't hide you anymore."
I had believed him.
I had even turned down Ravencrest because leaving Blackridge would have meant building a life he could not easily share. The academy had offered better labs, independent clinical rotations, and access to elite athletic programs. I chose the smaller Blackridge program anyway because Damon had asked me to wait.
I believed him through every secret dinner, every midnight training-room kiss, every morning I treated his shoulder before the rest of the clinic arrived. I believed him when rumors linked him to daughters of powerful families. I believed him when my parents praised Vanessa's political instincts and told me sports therapy was a better fit for someone "quiet."
Tonight was supposed to be the last night I stood in anyone's shadow.
The heavy doors opened.
The room fell silent.
Damon entered in a black suit cut to his broad frame. My pulse jumped before I could stop it. His gaze swept the crowd, calm and commanding.
Then I saw the woman on his arm.
Vanessa.
My older sister wore silver, the same shade threaded through the Blackwood crest on Damon's jacket. Her hand rested in the crook of his elbow. She wasn't smiling at him.
She was smiling at the room.
At first, I told myself it was ceremonial. Our family ranked high in Blackridge. Vanessa had been trained for public events since she was sixteen. Maybe the council wanted the appearance of unity before Damon made his real announcement.
Then they reached the dais.
Damon didn't look at me.
"Tonight, I accept the responsibility of leading Blackridge," he said into the microphone. "And I intend to lead with stability, discipline, and strength. A pack this large cannot afford uncertainty at the top."
One of the elders lifted a narrow silver circlet from a velvet cushion.
My stomach dropped.
Damon turned to Vanessa.
"Vanessa Parker has the training and the political support this pack needs. She will stand beside me as future Luna."
The elder placed the circlet on my sister's head.
Applause broke out.
For one terrible second, I heard nothing.
My wolf did.
She recoiled so hard inside me that the control I had kept all evening snapped. My scent surged into the hall—pine after rain, sharp and wild with pain.
Damon stiffened.
Cedar and woodsmoke answered from the stage.
The two scents met in the center of the room and locked together with unmistakable force.
Gasps replaced applause.
"Fated mates."
"It's Lena."
"The younger Parker sister?"
Every head turned toward me.
Damon finally looked at me.
The bond between us pulled so violently that my knees weakened. His pupils widened. His wolf recognized mine. Everyone could feel it now. No rumor, council vote, or political arrangement could erase the truth written into our biology.
For one reckless heartbeat, hope rose in me.
He would stop this.
He would take Vanessa's hand away from his arm.
He would say he had made a mistake.
Instead, Damon tightened his grip on her fingers.
"Whatever Lena and I had is over," he said.
The room went dead quiet.
My mother seized my upper arm from behind.
"Don't make a scene," she hissed. "Vanessa has trained her entire life for this."
My father moved to my other side. "Stand down, Lena. The alliance is already negotiated. You will not humiliate this family because you are emotional."
I looked from them to Vanessa.
My sister didn't look guilty. She looked relieved.
Something inside me stopped hurting.
Not healed. Not forgiven.
Just finished.
I pulled free of my mother's grip and walked toward the stage.
Whispers followed me down the aisle. My heels struck the marble in an even rhythm. Damon watched every step, the muscles in his neck tight as the bond dragged at both of us.
Vanessa shifted closer to him when I climbed the dais.
I ignored her.
I reached behind my neck and unclasped the pendant.
Damon's expression changed.
"Lena—"
I took his hand, turned his palm upward, and dropped the silver disk into it.
"Then keep your Luna."
His fingers closed around the pendant.
The bond lashed between us.
He reached for my wrist on instinct.
I stepped back before he could touch me.
"Don't."
It was one word, but it stopped him.
I turned away.
Behind me, my mother whispered my name like a warning. Vanessa said nothing. Damon said nothing either, and that silence told me more than any promise he had ever made beneath the willow.
I took my phone from my clutch as I crossed the hall.
There was one number I had ignored for three months because accepting the offer would mean leaving Blackridge.
I called it.
"Ravencrest Academy admissions," a woman answered.
The hall was quiet enough that half the room could hear me.
"This is Lena Parker. I was offered a transfer into the advanced sports therapy program."
A pause.
"Yes, Miss Parker. Your place is still open until midnight."
I looked back once.
Damon stood beneath the Blackwood banners with my sister wearing the Luna circlet beside him. The pendant he had given me was trapped in his fist.
"I'm accepting," I said. "I'll be there by morning."
Then I walked through the doors before anyone could decide I needed permission.
