After My Mate Used the Bond as a Leash Chapter 1

"Kneel."

One word, dropped through the bond like a stone into still water, and my knees hit the marble floor before my mind caught up to what my body had already surrendered.

Two hundred wolves watched. I had built this banquet with my own hands—six months of back-channel calls, three canceled trade routes rerouted, a treaty Braxton hadn't even read before he signed it. And now I was on the ground in front of all of them, palms flat on cold stone, while Elle glided past me in green silk that smelled like him. Like his skin, his sheets, his throat. She sat in the Luna's chair like it had always been hers.

Braxton didn't look away. His eyes were flat, patient, the way you watch an animal you're testing for a limp. Waiting to see if I'd fight for my place.

I didn't fight. My wolf whimpered once, small and far away, then went silent.

When the command released, I rose, walked to the back of the hall, and sat alone. My hands shook under the table where no one could see them.

That night, in my quarters, my wolf spoke to me for the first time in years. Not begging. Not soft. *He used the bond as a leash. In front of everyone.*

I pressed my palm to the mark on my neck. It burned and it was cold at the same time, like a doorway with nothing behind it. I took out my old journal—the one he'd read aloud to prove I never loved him, only wanted him—and I read my own sixteen-year-old handwriting until the words blurred. Then I closed it, packed it in my bag, and opened the quarterly training protocol instead. My hands were steady. I did not sleep.

Braxton came the next morning like nothing had happened. I gave him patrol schedules. Supply counts. Treaty clauses. Nothing that belonged to a wife.

"Tell me you belong to me," he said, and his voice dropped into that register I knew too well.

The bond yanked the words out of my throat like gravel dragged over stone. "I belong to you."

Something in my chest snapped taut and ugly—my wolf, snarling for the first time in a decade, teeth bared at a man she could not reach. I picked up my ledger. I did not look at him again. He stood there a long moment, rattled by a silence he couldn't command his way through, and then he left.

The memo was in the administrative stack two days later. Elle's handwriting, tight and looping. *Trial One: public submission test (complete). Trial Two: isolate the emotional anchor.* A list, like I was livestock being weighed.

I folded it into perfect corners and locked it in my drawer beside the alliance papers I had authored and Braxton had signed his name to. Then I opened my laptop and began copying ten years of work onto a drive no one at Ironridge knew existed—territorial maps, patrol rotations, every alliance condition I'd ever negotiated. My hands moved with a calm I hadn't earned yet, like a woman who had already decided something she hadn't said out loud, even to herself.

I heard them through the wall that evening. Elle's laugh, bright and pleased with itself. "Dropped him at the tree line past the north marker. Rogue territory. He won't find his way back."

Braxton's voice, low. "Good. A real Luna doesn't need a mongrel to feel something."

Rusty. My mark ignited—not my own feeling, his, bleeding through the tether like acid. I walked to the bathroom and gripped the sink until my knuckles went white, watching the mark pulse in the mirror. Then I dug my nails in and tore it open. Not for grief. For something I chose to feel instead of what he was pouring into me.

I cleaned the wound. Changed my collar so it wouldn't show. Then I drove, alone, until the paved road gave out and the trees turned wild and unclaimed.

I parked at the border and stared into the dark for forty minutes. I did not cross.

I opened my phone instead and logged the coordinates into the encrypted drive, right beside the maps I had stolen back from a man who never deserved to own them.

Headlights swung into my rearview mirror—too fast, too close for a patrol route this far out. My phone buzzed against my thigh. Elle's name lit the screen.

*Trial Two starts tomorrow. Don't be late, Luna.*
