After My Mate Used the Bond Against Me Chapter 1

The bond broke at exactly 9:47 p.m., three seconds after Alexander leaned close enough that I could smell Arianna's perfume on his collar.

His breath was warm against my ear. His hand rested on my shoulder—light, almost affectionate, the kind of touch three hundred wolves would read as a mate's gentle guidance. But the voice that came through the bond wasn't gentle at all.

"Go to the east chamber. Bare your neck to Alpha Gregor."

It wasn't a request. It was Alpha tone, threaded directly through the mate bond like a hand closing around my throat from the inside. My wolf—silent for five years, so silent I'd stopped listening for her—didn't stir. My legs moved before my mind caught up. I stood. The chair scraped back. Conversations around us continued without pause.

I looked at Alexander. His eyes were on the high table, where Alpha Gregor sat with his Gamma, both of them watching. Alexander's expression was calm, almost bored. He lifted his wine glass and took a slow sip.

"Now, Serena."

The bond pulsed. My body obeyed.

I walked. The great hall stretched endlessly ahead of me. Chandeliers glittered overhead. Laughter rose and fell in waves. I passed the Beta's table, the Gamma's table, the rows of Deltas in their formal dress. No one stopped me. No one asked where I was going. The Gamma—Derek, Alexander's second—rose from his seat near the door and fell into step beside me without a word. His face was carefully blank.

Behind me, I heard the scrape of another chair. I didn't need to turn around to know Arianna Dixon had just slid into my seat.

The corridor outside the hall was cold. My heels clicked against the stone floor. Derek walked two paces ahead, leading me toward the east wing where visiting Alphas were housed during formal events. The private chambers. I knew what they were for. Everyone knew.

My hands were shaking. I pressed my fingertips against the inside of my wrist—an old habit, something I'd done since I was a Healer's apprentice—and felt my pulse hammering under the skin. The bond was still there, live and pulsing, but it felt wrong. Like a leash pulled taut.

Derek stopped in front of a heavy oak door. He didn't look at me. "Alpha Gregor will arrive shortly," he said quietly. Then he turned and walked back the way we'd come.

I stood alone in the corridor. The door was closed. I could hear music drifting faintly from the banquet hall—violins, laughter, the clink of glasses. I thought about running. My wolf didn't answer. She hadn't answered in five years.

I pushed the door open.

The chamber was cold and empty. A single lamp burned on a low table. Stone walls, a narrow window, a chair pushed against the far corner. The kind of room designed for transactions, not comfort. I stepped inside. The door closed behind me with a soft click.

I knelt.

It wasn't a conscious choice. The bond was still pulling, Alexander's command still threaded through my nervous system like a live wire. My knees hit the floor. I tilted my head back, baring my neck the way unmated she-wolves did when they submitted to a visiting Alpha. The way a Luna never did. The air was cold against my throat.

I waited.

My mind was screaming. My body was still. I could feel the bond humming faintly in my chest, Alexander's presence on the other end of it—distant, distracted, already turning his attention back to the banquet. He wasn't even thinking about me anymore. I was a task he'd delegated. A diplomatic token. A gift.

The door opened.

I didn't move. Footsteps crossed the room—slow, deliberate, too light to be Alpha Gregor's heavy military stride. I kept my eyes on the floor. The footsteps stopped in front of me.

"Serena."

The voice wasn't Gregor's.

I looked up.

Lycan Prince Colson Howard stood three feet away, his hands loose at his sides, his expression calm and cold in a way that made the temperature in the room drop. His aura filled the chamber like a physical pressure—royal, ancient, the kind of power that didn't need to announce itself. He wasn't wearing formal court dress. Just dark trousers and a shirt with the sleeves rolled back, as if he'd come here in a hurry.

He crouched slowly, bringing himself to my eye level without touching me.

"What Alexander just did," he said quietly, "violates the Luna Accord. Do you understand what that means?"

I stared at him. My throat was tight. I couldn't speak.

"It means he used the mate bond as a weapon," Colson continued. His voice was steady, precise, the tone of someone delivering a legal verdict. "He commanded you through Alpha tone to submit sexually to another Alpha. That's not pack discipline. That's prostitution under duress. The Lycan Council has jurisdiction."

I found my voice. It came out hoarse. "You recorded it."

"I recorded the resonance through the bond," he said. "The Alpha tone leaves a signature. I've been monitoring Alexander's use of it for two years. This is the first time he's crossed into criminal violation." He paused. "I've been waiting for the moment inaction became complicity."

I looked at him—really looked at him—and for the first time in five years, someone looked back at me as though I wasn't small.

Colson stood and extended his hand. Not a command. An offer.

I took it.

He pulled me to my feet. His grip was warm and steady. The bond with Alexander pulsed faintly in my chest, confused, searching for the command it had expected me to complete. I felt it flicker. Colson's aura wrapped around me like a shield, and the bond's pull weakened.

"You have options now," Colson said. "Legal ones. I'll walk you through them. But first, we're leaving this room."

He opened the door. The corridor was empty. Music still drifted from the banquet hall. Somewhere in that hall, Alexander was laughing. Arianna was sitting in my chair.

Colson's hand rested lightly on my shoulder—nothing like Alexander's touch, nothing like a leash—and we walked.
