After My Mate Killed Our Pup Chapter 1

The wine hit my tongue wrong at 8:47 by the banquet hall clock, and I remember thinking: too bitter, too sharp, before my legs stopped answering me.

Vera Holt was still mid-toast, her glass lifted, her voice warm and rolling through the hall—"To Ironveil and Silverfang, bound by blood and by faith"—when the floor tilted sideways and came up to meet my face. I didn't drop the glass. I felt it shatter against stone a half-second after I did, red wine and red blood running into the same crack between the tiles, and for one confused breath I couldn't tell which was which.

Then the pain arrived, and there was no confusing anything.

It tore through me in waves, low and grinding, my body trying to expel something it had carried five months with everything I had. I heard myself make a sound I didn't recognize as mine. Somewhere above me, chairs scraped back, someone screamed, and I reached out—not for a hand, not for help—I reached for cedar and winter smoke, the scent that had lived under my skin since the night my wolf woke and the bond took root.

I found nothing. Empty air where his aura should have wrapped around me like a second skin.

I turned my head against the cold floor and found him across the room, upright, untouched, his hand resting at the small of Sophie's back like it belonged there. He didn't move. Not one step. I watched Emmett Graham, Alpha of Ironveil, my mate, choose to remain standing while I bled out our pup on the floor in front of two hundred witnesses.

My wolf—faint as she'd always been—snapped awake and threw herself against my ribs, a single violent surge of fury that had nowhere to go. Then the sedative Marcus pressed into my arm pulled me under.

I woke to voices, not light. My body was lead, my mouth full of cotton, but my ears worked fine.

"Directly into the mark site," Emmett said. Unhurried. Clinical. The same tone he used for border reports. "Then the wolfsbane, twice daily. I want her wolf dormant. Permanently."

Marcus's instruments clinked against the tray, his breath coming fast and uneven, a man's hands shaking around a job his mouth didn't dare refuse. "Alpha, the concentration—if it's too high, it could—"

"Do it."

I couldn't move. Couldn't open my eyes, couldn't make a sound to tell them I was awake inside my own execution. I felt the needle find the mark on my neck—the mark he'd put there himself, the night he claimed me—and the warmth that had lived under that bite for two years went out like a candle pinched between fingers. My wolf, already faint, sank without a whimper, swallowed by something deep and black.

I lay there and did the only thing left to me. I memorized it. The dosage. The time on the wall clock. The particular hitch in Marcus's breathing when he capped the vial.

The next morning they wheeled me into the great hall, my neck bandaged, my face the color of ash. Emmett stood at the front with Sophie beside him, my Luna pendant hanging openly against her collarbone.

"I, Emmett Graham, Alpha of the Ironveil Pack," he said, without a single tremor, "reject you, Lena Dunn, as my mate and Luna."

The bond didn't just break. It was dragged, blade-flat, the length of my sternum, and my mark went from cold to hollow—a door closing on an empty room. The pack bowed to Sophie. Not one voice rose for me.

Winifred stepped forward before they could wheel me out, plucking the last insignia from my chair with two fingers and letting it drop. "The Omega will be relocated to the servants' quarters," she announced. "She is to be treated accordingly."

I pressed two fingers to the dead mark on my neck and said nothing. In the third row, Reid Calloway looked away—not in submission, in something closer to shame. Vera Holt did not bow at all.

That evening, in the corridor outside the servants' quarters, Winifred produced a branding iron, silver-tipped, crescent-shaped—the mark for rogues. "Discipline," she said, "for the disorder you caused."

The iron smoked against my forearm. I fixed my eyes on the stone above her shoulder and counted until the burn stopped screaming and became only heat.

Alone on the cot that night, I traced the crescent scar with one finger and let the numbers settle into place in my mind—times, dosages, the exact words Emmett had used. Across the narrow room, a security camera blinked red above the door, patient and unremarkable, exactly the kind Marcus and the healers used to log inventory.

I looked at it for a long time before I closed my eyes.
