After My Mate Drugged Me to Kill My Wolf Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday night.

I knew the exact moment because I was staring at the ceremonial clock above the platform when Jude opened his mouth and said the words that turned my spine to ice.

"I, Jude, Alpha of Ironvale, reject you, Mia Kelly, as my mate."

The mark on my neck went cold first. Not painful yet—just cold, like someone had pressed a frozen coin against the skin where his teeth should have sealed the bond tonight. Then it went hollow. Empty. Like a door slamming shut in a room that had never existed.

I was on my knees before I understood I was falling.

The ceremonial hall was full. Hundreds of wolves, all dressed for a celebration. Torchlight made the stone walls glow amber. I'd stitched my dress myself over three weeks, white fabric with lace at the sleeves, because I wanted to look like I belonged beside him when he finally claimed me in front of everyone. I'd been so careful with every stitch.

Through the haze of pain ripping through my chest, I watched Jude extend his hand toward the side entrance. Lola Chapman stepped into the light. She wore silver—Thornfield Pack colors—and her smile was sharp enough to cut.

"I present Lola Chapman, daughter of Alpha Aldric of Thornfield, as my chosen Luna," Jude said. His voice carried across the hall without effort. "This union will secure the alliance between Ironvale and Thornfield, and bring strength to both our packs."

The crowd erupted. Applause, howls of approval, the stamp of feet on stone. Lola ascended the platform and took Jude's hand. She looked at me once—just once—and her smile widened.

I couldn't breathe. The hollow space where the mark had been was spreading, cold creeping down my spine and into my ribs. My wolf, silent for six years, slammed against the inside of my chest with a fury I'd never felt before. Not a shift—I still couldn't shift—but a roar that had no sound, only heat flooding my veins like gasoline catching fire.

It got me off my knees.

I stood. My legs shook, but I stood. The hall noise dimmed as wolves nearest the platform noticed. I reached up, fingers clumsy, and unclasped the rank insignia from my throat—the silver pin that marked me as Ironvale's alliance coordinator, the only rank Jude had ever given me. I held it for a moment, feeling its weight. Six years. I'd worn it for six years.

I dropped it at Jude's feet.

The metal hit stone with a bright, ringing crack. The hall went silent.

Jude's eyes snapped to me. "Mia—"

"No." My voice came out steady. I didn't recognize it. "You're done."

His face darkened. He stepped forward, and when he spoke, it was in the Alpha tone—the command voice that bypassed thought and hit the nervous system directly. "You will stop. You will sit down. You will not make a scene."

The command rolled over me like a wave. I felt it—pressure at the base of my skull, weight in my knees trying to drag me down. For six years, that tone had worked on me every single time.

I turned toward the doors and started walking.

Behind me, Jude sucked in a breath. Someone in the crowd gasped. My body didn't stop. My legs kept moving. The Alpha tone cracked against my spine again—"Mia, I command you to stop"—and I felt it shatter like glass hitting concrete.

I pushed through the double doors and into the night.

Rain hit my face immediately, cold and hard. A storm had rolled in while we were inside, the kind that turned the ground to mud in minutes. I walked down the steps, my white dress already soaked through, and kept going. The pack house gates were open. I walked through them.

I didn't look back.

By the time I reached the edge of pack territory, my skin was numb from cold and my lungs burned from walking too fast without enough air. The hollow space in my chest had turned into a constant, grinding ache, like something vital had been scooped out and the edges were still raw. But I was outside Ironvale's borders. I was standing in neutral territory. And Jude's Alpha tone couldn't reach me here even if he tried.

I sank down onto a fallen log just inside the tree line and let myself shake.

My wolf was still thrashing inside me, furious and awake in a way she'd never been. I didn't understand it. I'd never had a wolf. Everyone knew that. Jude had told me years ago that some wolves just don't awaken, that it didn't make me less useful, that he valued my mind more than my strength anyway.

But she was there now. I could feel her. And she was screaming.

I sat in the rain until my dress was ruined and my fingers were too cold to bend, and then I stood up and started walking toward the only place I could think to go—the old supply depot on the edge of the territory, the one I'd used for alliance meetings when I didn't want pack witnesses. I had a key. I had a list in my head of every treaty I'd brokered, every warrior I'd trained, every supply route I'd mapped.

If Jude thought I'd crawl back, he was wrong.

If he thought I'd disappear quietly, he didn't know me at all.

I reached the depot, unlocked the door, and stepped inside. My reflection caught in the window glass—soaked, shaking, still wearing the dress I'd stitched for a ceremony that never happened.

I looked like a drowned thing.

I smiled.
