After My Mate Chose the New Luna Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday night.

I felt it the way you feel a door closing in an empty house — not loud, just final. The mark on my neck went cold first. Then hollow. Like someone had scooped out the space beneath my skin and left nothing but air.

Three hundred wolves stood in a circle around us under the full moon. The ceremonial candles flickered. Weston's hand had been on my shoulder a moment ago. Now it was gone.

Morgan Carr walked through the parted crowd in ceremonial white.

The dress was custom. I knew because I'd seen the invoice — Johanna had it made at the same boutique that did mine, two weeks after my final fitting. Morgan's train dragged through the grass, picking up dew and dirt, and she didn't seem to notice. Her eyes were on Weston.

His hand moved to her waist.

I stood three feet away, still holding my ceremonial bouquet. White roses and wolfsbane. The irony wasn't lost on me now.

"Audrey." Weston's voice carried the Alpha tone — not harsh, just absolute. The crowd went silent. "I need to speak."

I said nothing. There was nothing to say. I'd known this moment was coming the second Morgan walked onto the ceremonial ground. I'd known it before that, maybe. Some part of me that still worked.

Weston turned to face the assembled pack. His jaw was set. Morgan's hand rested on his chest, fingers spread over his heart like a claim.

"I, Weston Davis, Alpha of Shadowridge," he said, and the formal cadence made my wolf — the wolf I didn't have — go still inside me. Except I didn't have a wolf. So the stillness was just me. "Reject you, Audrey Daniels, as my mate."

The mark on my neck turned to ice.

I waited for the pain everyone talked about. The soul-deep agony of a severed bond. The screaming collapse that always followed a public rejection.

I felt cold. Distant. Like I was watching myself from across the clearing.

Three hundred wolves stared at me. Waiting.

I looked down at the bouquet in my hands. The white roses were wilting at the edges. I'd picked them up from the florist myself this morning. Paid for them with my own account. Just like I'd paid for the candles, the ceremonial arch, the catering, the musicians.

I set the bouquet on the altar.

Then I walked to the microphone.

The crowd shifted. Murmurs rippled through the circle. Morgan's triumphant smile froze halfway.

I pulled my leather notebook from my clutch. The same notebook I'd been keeping since I was sixteen. Every expense logged. Every debt tracked. Every hour of work I'd done for this pack, itemized.

I opened it to the marked page.

"Ceremony candles," I said into the microphone. My voice came out flat. Precise. "Four hundred seventy-three dollars. Floral arrangements, six hundred twenty. Catering deposit, two thousand. Musician retainer, eight hundred. Ceremonial arch rental, three fifty."

Someone in the crowd coughed.

I kept reading.

"Territorial improvements funded from my inheritance trust over the last seven years: training ground expansion, forty-two thousand. Pack house roof repair, eighteen thousand. Security system upgrade, thirty-one thousand. Legal fees for the border dispute with Crescent Falls, sixty-seven thousand."

Weston's face had gone carefully blank.

"Administrative labor," I continued. "Logged at the regional standard rate for a Beta's assistant. Three thousand two hundred hours over seven years. At sixty dollars per hour, that's one hundred ninety-two thousand dollars."

I closed the notebook.

"Total debt owed to Audrey Daniels by Shadowridge Pack and Alpha Weston Davis: three hundred sixty-one thousand, six hundred forty-three dollars. Payment is due within thirty days per the standard pack contract clause 14-B. Failure to pay will result in formal arbitration before the regional council."

I set the notebook on the altar next to the wilting bouquet.

The silence was absolute.

Morgan's mouth had fallen open. Johanna stood near the front of the crowd, her Luna's composure cracking at the edges. Nelson — my father — looked at the ground.

Weston found his voice first. "Audrey—"

"The debt notice is formal," I said. "It's already filed with the council. You'll receive the official copy tomorrow."

I turned and walked toward the edge of the ceremonial circle.

No one moved to stop me.

I crossed the boundary line — the invisible border that separated pack territory from neutral ground — and kept walking. The bond mark on my neck stayed cold and hollow. My chest felt empty. My hands didn't shake.

Behind me, three hundred wolves stood in silence.

I made it to my car before the first tear came. Just one. I wiped it away and started the engine.

The notebook was still on the altar. But I had copies. Three of them, in three separate locations.

I'd learned a long time ago that the only thing I could trust was documentation.

As I pulled onto the main road, my phone buzzed. A text from an unknown number: *Lockout effective immediately. Pack house access revoked. Collect your belongings by Friday.*

I deleted it.

Then I opened my glove compartment and pulled out a manila envelope. Inside: my mother's original territorial deed. The one Johanna thought was locked in the pack vault.

The pack house sat on my land. The training grounds. The ceremonial clearing they'd just used to reject me.

All of it. Mine.

I set the envelope on the passenger seat and drove toward the property lawyer's office. He kept late hours. I'd called ahead.

Behind me, Shadowridge Pack was celebrating a new Luna.

Ahead of me, the road stretched dark and empty.

Something stirred in my chest. Not pain. Not grief.

Something that felt almost like a growl.
