The pendant felt heavier than it should.
Kairi stood at the center of the Silverfang Pack Banquet hall, surrounded by cheering wolves, their howls of celebration echoing off the high timber beams. Alpha Liam Parker—her mate, her Alpha, the father of the pup growing in her belly—had just fastened the ornate silver pendant around her neck. It was beautiful. Intricate wolf designs curled across its surface, catching the firelight.
"This bond is unbreakable," Liam announced, his voice carrying that Alpha authority that made every wolf in the room straighten instinctively. "Blessed by the Moon Goddess herself. My Luna. My mate. Forever."
The pack roared approval. Kairi's fingers found the pendant, pressing it gently against her collarbone. Her throat felt tight. She smiled up at Liam, and he smiled back—that commanding, composed expression that had always made her feel safe. Protected.
She should have felt happy. She was happy. Wasn't she?
Liam's hand rested briefly on her rounded belly before he turned to accept congratulations from the Beta. The gesture looked affectionate. It felt... performative. Kairi pushed the thought away. Pregnancy hormones made everything feel strange lately.
The banquet continued for hours. Food, music, laughter. Kairi played her role perfectly—gracious Luna, devoted mate, glowing mother-to-be. She thanked pack members for their gifts. She laughed at the right moments. She kept one hand on her belly and the other near the pendant.
By the time they returned to the pack house, exhaustion had settled deep into her bones. Liam kissed her forehead in the foyer. "I have late patrol tonight," he said. "Border check. Don't wait up."
"Again?" The question slipped out before she could stop it.
His expression didn't change. "It's my responsibility, Kairi. You know that."
She nodded. He left through the side door, and she stood alone in the quiet house, one hand pressed to the pendant that suddenly felt cold against her skin.
An hour later, Sloan Mitchell arrived.
"I brought you something!" Sloan's voice was warm, familiar, as she swept into the sitting room carrying a soft bundle wrapped in lavender tissue. "For the nursery. I saw these blankets in town and thought of you immediately."
Kairi smiled. Sloan had been her best friend for years—long before Liam, long before the Luna title, back when they were just two she-wolves trying to figure out their place in the world. Sloan always brought gifts. Always visited. Always played the role of devoted friend.
"You didn't have to," Kairi said, but she was genuinely touched. She set the bundle on the side table and opened her arms for a hug.
Sloan stepped into the embrace, wrapping her arms around Kairi's shoulders. The hug lasted longer than usual. Sloan's hair brushed against Kairi's cheek.
And then Kairi smelled it.
Pine and leather. Rich, unmistakable, saturated deep into Sloan's neck and hair. Not a passing trace from a casual encounter. This was the scent of prolonged, intimate contact. This was the scent that clung to skin after hours together, after closeness that left no space between bodies.
This was Liam's scent.
Kairi's breath caught. Her heart slammed against her ribs. For one terrible moment, the world tilted.
She pulled back slowly, carefully, and fixed her expression into something warm and grateful. "Thank you," she said. Her voice sounded normal. Steady. "These are perfect."
Sloan beamed. "I'm so glad! You look tired, though. Should I let you rest?"
"Yes," Kairi said. "The pup's been active tonight."
Sloan hugged her again—briefly this time—and left with a cheerful wave. Kairi stood in the sitting room, one hand pressed to her belly, the other finding the pendant at her throat.
Pine and leather. On Sloan's neck. On her best friend's neck.
Liam was supposed to be on border patrol.
Kairi's fingers tightened around the pendant until the edges bit into her palm.
She didn't sleep that night. She lay in bed staring at the ceiling, her mind racing through explanations that didn't hold. Innocent reasons that dissolved under scrutiny. By the time dawn light crept through the curtains, she had made a decision.
She needed proof.
The Luna's administrative terminal sat in the small office off the main hall—a space Liam rarely used, preferring to conduct Alpha business from his own study. Kairi logged in using her Luna credentials. Her hands were shaking.
She pulled up the pack's mind-link security archive. Every unshielded conversation was automatically recorded as a safety measure, a system designed to protect the pack from rogue infiltration or internal threats. Alphas were supposed to shield their private links. It was basic protocol.
Kairi searched Liam's ID. She told herself she was reviewing border patrol logs. Routine Luna business.
What she found instead made her stomach drop.
Dozens of unshielded private link sessions. Timestamps that didn't match border patrol schedules. Coordinates that traced not to the territory edge, but to an address in town. Sloan's apartment.
Night after night. For months.
Kairi's vision blurred. She clicked on the most recent archived exchange, dated two nights ago. Liam's voice filled her ears through the terminal's audio feed—that same voice that had declared their bond unbreakable at the banquet.
"Once the pup is born, I'll reject her at the next Pack Banquet," Liam said. His tone was calm. Matter-of-fact. "You'll be my Luna before the moon cycle ends. I promise."
Sloan's voice answered, breathy and eager. "And she won't fight it?"
"She can't," Liam replied. "Her wolf awakened late. She's weak. The pack knows it. Once I reject her, she'll have no standing. We'll petition the Council to demote her to Omega. She'll leave quietly."
The recording continued. Kairi couldn't hear the rest. A roaring sound filled her ears, drowning out everything else.
Her hands gripped the edge of the desk. The pendant hung heavy around her neck—that beautiful, ornate lie.
And then something inside her cracked open.
It wasn't grief. It wasn't despair.
It was rage.
Pure, white-hot, clarifying rage that tore through her chest and ignited something that had been sleeping for years. Her wolf—the wolf that had awakened so late, the wolf everyone dismissed as weak—surged to the surface with a power so sudden and overwhelming that Kairi gasped.
Her vision sharpened. Her senses exploded. She could smell everything—the faint residue of Liam's scent on the chair, the pine cleaner the Omegas used on the floors, the distant scent of the forest beyond the territory line.
And beneath it all, she could feel her wolf's voice, clear and furious and hers.
*They think we're weak,* the wolf growled. *Let's show them what weak really looks like.*
