After My Husband Used My Womb for His Affair Baby Chapter 1

Three days before Christmas, the first crack appeared.

Esteban left his phone on the nightstand and went into the bathroom. The shower started running. A cloud of warm steam drifted under the door.

I sat on the edge of the mattress, rubbing my sore lower back. I was twelve weeks pregnant. It had taken five grueling rounds of IVF, hundreds of hormone shots, and four years of quiet heartbreak to get here. My body felt bruised and heavy, but I was happy. I thought we were happy.

Then, Esteban’s phone lit up on the dark wood.

I looked over. The screen wallpaper was different. For five years, it had been a photo of the Manhattan skyline from our terrace. Now, it was a close-up of two hands. Esteban’s large fingers were intertwined with a woman’s delicate, slender hand. She had soft pink polish on her nails. A thin silver band rested on her pinky finger.

It wasn't my hand. I don't wear pink polish. I never have.

My chest went cold. The water kept running in the bathroom, loud and steady.

My fingers shook as I picked up the phone. I tapped in his passcode—our anniversary. It unlocked instantly.

There was an unsaved contact at the top of his messages. The latest text read: *I miss your touch already. Don’t stay in that bed too long.*

Below it was a picture. It was taken in the Carroll penthouse living room, right by the fireplace, showing bare legs tangled in a cashmere blanket. My stomach flipped. I opened the cloud backup settings. Buried beneath a hidden photo album was an account profile name.

*Araya.*

Araya Morales.

My breath stopped. Araya was Esteban’s late brother’s adopted daughter. The Carroll family took her in ten years ago when she was just seventeen. I had welcomed her into our home. I had cooked dinners for her, bought her coats, and comforted her when she cried about feeling like an outsider.

She was our niece.

The bathroom door clicked open. Esteban stepped out, a white towel wrapped around his waist. He looked at me, then down at his phone in my hand.

I locked the screen and put it down. My voice wouldn’t work. He didn't even notice my pale face. He just picked up the phone, slipped it into his robe pocket, and smiled his smooth, practiced smile.

"Get some rest, Hadley," he said, kissing my forehead. "Think about the baby."

The next morning, I couldn't breathe in that penthouse.

I got into my coat, grabbed my purse, and drove straight to Carroll Enterprises headquarters in Midtown. My heart hammered against my ribs the entire ride. I kept telling myself there had to be a mistake. A misunderstanding. A sick joke.

The elevator took me to the top executive floor. I stepped out onto the plush carpet and walked toward Esteban’s corner office.

The outer walls were pure glass. Through the pane, I saw him.

Esteban was standing by the window. Araya stood right beside him. She wore a cream cashmere sweater that fell slightly off one shoulder.

He wasn't standing like an uncle. His large hand rested firmly on the small of her back, just above the curve of her hip. His thumb stroked her waist through the fabric. He leaned down, whispering into her ear. Araya tilted her head and let out a soft, breathy laugh. It was the intimate rhythm of two people who knew each other's bodies by heart.

Then, Araya looked up. Her eyes caught mine through the glass.

The laughter died on her lips. But she didn't look terrified. Instead, her face shifted in half a second into wide-eyed, fragile innocence. She stepped back quickly, dropping her eyes like a frightened child.

Esteban turned and saw me.

He came out into the hallway, shutting the heavy glass door behind him.

"Hadley?" His voice was cold. "What are you doing here?"

My hands trembled inside my coat pockets. "What was that, Esteban? Why was your hand on her?"

He didn't flinch. Instead, his eyes hardened. He looked around the open floor. Several assistants and analysts had stopped typing.

"Are you insane?" Esteban said loudly, his voice echoing across the open desks. "You're coming to my office and making wild accusations?"

"I saw you," I whispered, tears burning my eyes. "And I saw your phone last night. Araya's name—"

"Stop it!" he barked. He took a sharp step toward me, towering over me. "Look at yourself. You're hysterical. The doctor told you that high hormone levels from the IVF would cause mood swings, but this is ridiculous."

"Esteban, please—"

"You're completely paranoid, Hadley!" he shouted, turning so every employee could hear. "You're embarrassing yourself, and you're putting our child in danger. I won't let your delusions hurt my baby."

He turned to his assistant. "Call building security. Have them escort my wife to the hospital right now. Call Dr. Vance. Tell him she needs to be admitted for observation before she harms the pregnancy."

Two security guards stepped forward. "Mrs. Carroll. Please come with us."

"Don't touch me," I choked out.

Esteban didn't look at me again. He straightened his cufflinks, turned on his heel, and walked back into his office. Behind the glass, Araya stood quietly, looking down with a trembling bottom lip. But in her eyes, there wasn't a trace of fear. Only victory.

An hour later, I was lying in a private hospital room.

The walls were sterile white. Beside the bed, the fetal monitor gave a steady, mechanical sound. *Thump-thump. Thump-thump.*

The heartbeat of the baby inside me.

I stared at the ceiling tiles. I didn't cry. The humiliation had burned away, leaving a hollow, freezing numbness.

I picked up my phone and dialed.

"Hadley?" Freya’s voice came through, loud and energetic. "Aren't you supposed to be resting?"

"Freya," I said. My voice was completely flat. "I need you."

She heard it instantly. The line went quiet for two seconds. "Where are you?"

"Lenox Hill. Room 412."

Freya arrived thirty minutes later. She pushed the door open, wearing her black leather jacket, her face tight with worry. She looked at the hospital bed, the monitor, and the dead look in my eyes.

She walked over, pulled up a metal chair, and sat down. She didn't ask silly questions. She didn't offer empty hugs.

She leaned forward, her eyes sharp as glass.

"How deep do you want me to dig?" she asked.

I looked at her.

"All the way down."
