After My Husband Trusted His Mistress With Our Child Chapter 1

The courthouse smelled like coffee and old paper. I signed my name with the pen I use for case filings, the cheap one with the chewed cap. No flowers. No guests. Just a clerk with tired eyes and Ryan standing too close, like proximity might mean something.

"Second chance," he said, low, like it was a secret between us.

I didn't look up from the line where my signature went. "It's a custody document, Ryan. Nothing more."

He laughed, short and confused, like he expected me to argue. I didn't. I capped my pen and moved my single suitcase and Wrenlee's things back into the Brooklyn apartment that same evening. I'd already fought this war in private, alone, five years ago, on a bathroom floor he never saw. There was nothing left to fight now. Just logistics.

The first week, I built the routine the way I build a case — brick by brick, no gaps for anyone to slip through. I cooked. I kept the counters clear. I refilled his coffee before he asked, because a wife who anticipates needs looks devoted, and devotion is armor if you wear it right.

"How was your shift?" I asked one night, setting a plate down.

"Fine." He watched me the way you'd watch a door you weren't sure was locked. "You don't have to do all this."

"I know." I sat across from him and ate. I didn't touch him. I didn't avoid him either. I was just there — present in a way that gave him nothing to push against, like trying to grip water.

By the second week, he got creative.

I came home to find a blazer draped over the kitchen chair. Red, tailored, definitely not mine. I lifted it, folded it along the seams, and set it on the entry table like a delivery waiting for pickup. I didn't ask whose it was. I already knew.

That night his phone rang loud in the living room, volume turned up just enough to carry. "Hey, hey, slow down," he said, voice gone warm and urgent. "I'm here. Tell me what happened."

I poured myself tea. I refilled his mug too, setting it by his elbow while he murmured comfort into the phone. When he hung up, I looked at him with the mild, practiced concern of a woman who has nothing invested.

"Is Kassidy feeling better?"

He stared at me like I'd spoken another language. I picked up my file folder from the table and went back to the paragraph I'd been reading before he sat down. There was nothing else to say. He wanted a reaction. I'd stopped generating those five years ago, on a night he wasn't there for.

Work, at least, gave me somewhere to put my hands.

Maximilian Ross had been the firm's new senior partner for three weeks when he called me into his office for the Hargrove custody file. His office had sunflowers in a glass vase on the windowsill — strange, in November, and strange for a man whose reputation preceded him as surgical and unsentimental in court.

"You wrote the brief on the Delacroix evidentiary motion," he said, not as a question. "The chain-of-custody argument. That was yours."

"It was."

"It was good." He said it plainly, no flourish, and slid a folder across the desk. "I want your read on this deposition before Thursday."

We worked past seven that night. He asked precise questions — not about my life, not about the ring still on my hand from a signature I'd made that morning, just about inconsistencies in a father's testimony, about what the transcript wasn't saying. He listened the way people listen when they actually want the answer, not when they're waiting for their turn to talk.

"You caught the discrepancy in paragraph twelve," he said. "Most associates miss that."

"I read things twice. People rarely say exactly what they mean the first time."

Something in his face shifted, just slightly — not surprise, more like recognition. He didn't ask about the remarriage everyone in the office was already whispering about. He didn't ask why a woman who argued evidentiary procedure like a scalpel had gone back to a husband who'd made her name a cautionary tale five years ago. He just closed the folder, said, "Same time tomorrow," and let me leave.

I walked to the elevator, and for the first time in longer than I could count, I noticed the quiet wasn't lonely. It was just quiet. I filed the feeling away the way I file everything — noted, dated, not yet actionable. There would be time to look at it later, if there was ever a later worth looking at.

At home, the blazer was gone from the entry table. Ryan didn't mention it. Neither did I.
