After My Husband Spent My Money on His Mistress Chapter 1

I didn't mean to find it.

That's the thing I keep coming back to later, in all the months that follow. I wasn't snooping. I wasn't suspicious. I was transferring quarterly audit files from my work laptop to Everett's because mine was running a system update and I had a 9 a.m. presentation with a client who would not tolerate delays.

It was a Tuesday. Just a regular Tuesday in our apartment on the Upper West Side, the kind of night where Everett had already gone to bed and I was still awake at the kitchen island with my tea going cold, bathed in the blue glow of two screens.

I clicked into his Documents folder. Saw the usual chaos: shoot schedules, half-finished grant applications, folders labeled things like "Spring 2019 Venice Residency (maybe)." And then, near the bottom, a folder icon with no name. Just a lock symbol.

I hesitated. My cursor hovered. Then I thought about all the times Everett had borrowed my laptop, my passwords, my everything. The man used my Anthropic account to order his camera lenses. I clicked.

The folder opened.

For a long moment I didn't understand what I was looking at. A grid of thumbnail images. A woman's face, laughing. A hotel room. Limbs tangled in white sheets. Then I scrolled and saw her wearing the Hermès Birkin bag. The one that showed up on our joint credit card statement six months ago. The one Everett said was a "client gift" for some gallery owner in Brooklyn.

She was posing with it in a mirror. The bag on her arm. Her other hand holding a phone. A text timestamp in the corner: *Your wife has great taste. Too bad she doesn't have anything else.*

I clicked into the messages thread beneath the photos.

Everett: *She's working late again. When does she not work late?*

Yareli: *Does she even know how to have fun?*

Everett: *She knows how to sign checks. That's her superpower.*

Yareli: *I can't believe she doesn't suspect anything.*

Everett: *She won't. She's too busy being competent. Walking ATM with no sex appeal.*

I read that line three times. Then I scrolled further. Hundreds of messages. Photographs time-stamped across three years. Hotel rooms in SoHo, the Hamptons, Miami. Videos I did not click on. Receipts for dinners I never attended. A video tour of an apartment I'd never seen, Yareli spinning in the center of a sun-drenched studio, blowing a kiss at the camera.

*"Thank you, baby,"* she cooed in the video. *"I love our little hideaway."*

I closed the laptop.

I sat in the dark for forty-five minutes. I did not cry. I did not scream. I did not wake Everett. I sat there and felt my entire body go very still and very cold, the way it does when I find a discrepancy in a balance sheet that shouldn't exist.

Then I opened my own laptop. The encrypted one with the fingerprint lock and the client files I would go to jail for leaking.

I worked through the night.

I copied every photograph. Every message. Every receipt. I took screenshots, time-stamped them, and saved them into a private encrypted drive I labeled "Evidence – Hart v. Duncan." I organized the images into folders by date and location. I cross-referenced credit card statements and matched purchase dates to her Instagram posts. The Birkin bag. The Leica camera I saved six months to buy him for our anniversary. Hotel charges in the Hamptons the weekend I was in Chicago auditing a client's books. A $12,000 wire transfer to an account under her name.

By the time the sun started to rise, I had a complete forensic audit of my husband's affair. Over $400,000 in transfers and purchases across three years. All my money. All my bonuses. All the extra shifts and the skipped vacations and the sold Brooklyn condo that was supposed to be my safety net.

I looked at the spreadsheet I'd built. It was color-coded. Thoroughly cited. Court-ready.

And I still had not cried.

I heard Everett's alarm go off in the bedroom. Heard him shuffle into the bathroom. Heard the shower start.

I closed both laptops. Made coffee. Toasted bread. When he came into the kitchen, hair wet and smiling that easy morning smile he always had, I handed him a mug.

"Thanks, babe," he said, kissing the top of my head.

I smiled. "How'd you sleep?"

"Like the dead." He took a sip. "You're up early."

"Presentation today."

"You'll kill it. You always do." He squeezed my shoulder. "I'm gonna be late tonight. Gotta finalize some prints for the exhibition."

"No problem," I said.

He grabbed his jacket and left.

I stood at the kitchen island and finished my tea.

Then I opened my laptop again and got back to work.
