After My Husband Rebuilt Me as Another Woman Chapter 1

The terrace glows with candlelight. White gardenias everywhere. My favorite. I smile at Dorian across the table and lift my champagne flute. The crystal catches the light and throws tiny rainbows across his face.

"Five years," I say softly. "Can you believe it?"

He's watching me with that look he gets sometimes. Like I might disappear if he blinks. "Best five years of my life," he says. His voice is rough. Honest.

I believe him. Of course I believe him. He's my husband. My whole world. I don't remember much before him. Just fog and fragments. The doctors said it was trauma. An accident. Dorian saved me. He tells me that story sometimes when I wake up confused. He pulled me out of the water. He brought me here. He gave me a life.

The string quartet starts a new piece. Something slow and old. The melody wraps around me like smoke. I freeze with the glass halfway to my lips.

I know this song.

My hand starts shaking. Champagne sloshes over the rim. Dorian leans forward. "Claire? What's wrong?"

Claire. That's my name. Claire Snow. But the song keeps playing and something in my chest cracks open. Sunday mornings. A brownstone with tall windows. A man at a record player, humming off-key. Pancakes burning in the kitchen. A woman's laugh.

Daddy.

The word rises in my throat like broken glass. I set the flute down hard. It tips. Champagne spreads across the white linen like blood.

"Claire." Dorian stands. He's coming around the table. "Baby, talk to me."

A scent hits me. Subtle. Expensive. French perfume from the gardenias or the candles or somewhere. I know that smell. I know it the way I know my own heartbeat.

Mom wore that perfume.

The fog doesn't lift. It explodes.

I see my father in a hospital bed. Wires and machines. His face gray. I'm running down a hallway but I'm too late. I'm always too late. A woman's voice on a phone. Cruel and smooth. "Your daughter was never enough." The flatline scream of a monitor.

I see my mother. Blank eyes. A facility with white walls. She doesn't know me. She doesn't know anyone. She's gone and I can't bring her back.

I see a church. White roses. A wedding dress. I'm walking down the aisle and Dorian's at the altar and then he's not. He's walking away. A woman in red stands in the doorway. Pregnant. Smiling.

I see a parking garage. Headlights. Too fast. Impact. The baby. Oh god the baby.

I see black water. A yacht. Jumping. The cold swallowing me whole. Peace. Finally peace.

And then I see him. Dorian. Pulling me out. Not to save me. To keep me.

"Claire." He's right in front of me now. His hands reach for my shoulders. "You're scaring me. What's happening?"

I look up at him. My husband. The man I love. The man who destroyed everything I ever was.

"My name," I say quietly, "is Alayna Reed."

His face goes white. Just for a second. Then he's shaking his head. "No. Baby, no. You're confused. The doctors said this might happen. Memories get tangled. It's not real."

"My father's name was Arthur." My voice is steady. Calm. I feel calm. I feel nothing. "You killed him."

"Claire—"

"My mother's name is Virginia. You broke her."

"Stop." His hands tighten on my shoulders. "Stop this. You're my wife. We're happy. You love me."

I reach up. Slow. Careful. My fingers find the crystal hairpin holding my hair in place. It's heavy. Sharp. I pull it free. My hair falls around my shoulders.

Dorian sees the hairpin. His eyes go wide. "Don't."

I drive it into his chest.

He makes a sound. Shocked. Small. His hands fly to the wound. Blood wells between his fingers. Dark and fast. He stumbles back. Hits the table. Champagne and gardenias crash to the terrace floor.

I watch him fall. I feel nothing.

He's gasping. Staring at me. "Why?"

I kneel down. Take his phone from his jacket pocket. My hands are steady. I dial 911. A woman answers.

"My name is Alayna Reed," I say clearly. "My husband has been keeping me prisoner for five years. I've stabbed him. Send an ambulance and a detective."

Dorian's still staring. Blood spreads across his white shirt. He's trying to say something. My name maybe. Claire or Alayna. I don't know. I don't care.

I stand up. Walk to the terrace steps. Sit down. The Pacific stretches out black and endless. I stare at it and wait.

Sirens come fast. Red and blue lights wash over the house. Paramedics rush past me. A woman in a blazer walks up the steps. Detective's shield on her belt. She's older. Tired eyes. She's seen things.

She sits down next to me. Doesn't say anything for a long moment. Just looks at the blood on my dress. The hairpin still on the terrace floor. Dorian being loaded onto a stretcher.

"Alayna Reed," she says finally. Quiet. Like she's testing the name.

"Yes."

"I'm Detective Piper Williamson."

I nod. The paramedics are shouting. Something about the hairpin missing his heart. Two centimeters. He'll live.

Of course he will.

"How long?" I ask. My voice cracks for the first time. "How long has it been? How long since I was real?"

Piper looks at me. Really looks. And I see it in her face. She believes me. She knows.

"Let's get you inside," she says gently. "And then we'll figure it out. All of it."

I stand. My legs shake. Piper steadies me. We walk past the paramedics. Past Dorian on the stretcher. He's reaching for me. Saying my name. Claire. Always Claire.

I don't look back.
