After My Husband Pushed Me for His Pregnant Mistress Chapter 1

The garage smelled like rain and cold concrete, the way it always did on Mercer Island in October. I ducked into Adrian's Audi looking for my phone charger, the one I swore I'd left in his cupholder that morning. Instead my fingers closed around a small black box wedged under the passenger seat — his dashcam, the one his insurance company insisted on after a fender-bender last spring.

I almost put it back. Almost.

But I wanted to check the timestamp, make sure the battery hadn't died, some small domestic reflex I couldn't explain later no matter how many times people asked. I plugged it into my laptop at the kitchen island, headphones still around my neck from a call an hour earlier.

And then I heard his voice.

Not the voice he used on me. Not the clipped, clinical cadence I'd built a marriage around. This was warm. Coaxing. "Zip it slow," he was saying. "Something beautiful. Something you deserve far more than she ever did."

Silk rustling. A breathless laugh — not mine. And then the details clicked into place like a lock turning: the beading, the hand-sewn tulle, the exact French seam my Vera Wang team had fussed over for six months. My gown. My hundred-and-twenty-thousand-dollar gown. Being worn inside his autopsy suite, of all places, a room he wouldn't let me kiss him in because I might be carrying "outside contaminants."

I played it three times. I didn't move.

The next morning I sat in my OB-GYN's parking lot with a printed report on the passenger seat. Seven weeks. Strong heartbeat. I stared at the little flutter on the ultrasound printout and felt something crack open in my chest that had nothing to do with joy and everything to do with math — the timeline, his hands, that room.

I didn't cry. I drove home.

***

I found Adrian in his study that evening, hunched over his private sink, scrubbing his hands for exactly ninety seconds like he did before dinner, after dinner, before touching a doorknob that wasn't his own. I set my phone on his desk and hit play.

His hands kept moving under the water.

When the recording ended, he turned off the faucet and dried his hands on the monogrammed towel he kept for himself alone. He didn't flinch. He didn't even turn around right away.

"Milana is someone pure," he said finally, folding the towel into thirds. "She doesn't reek of new money the way you do."

"That's what you have to say."

"You want me to apologize for giving someone beauty untainted by commerce? You wouldn't understand that if I drew you a diagram. Everything with you comes back to a ledger." He finally looked at me, and his eyes had the same flat patience he probably used on cadavers. "You've never once experienced something without pricing it."

I pulled the folded ultrasound printout from my coat pocket and held it up between us.

"Seven weeks," I said. "Strong heartbeat."

He glanced at it. Actually glanced — a half-second, no more — before his gaze slid back to my face.

"That changes nothing about what I've said."

I didn't answer him. I turned, walked down the hall, and locked the master bedroom door behind me. I sat on the edge of the bed with my leather notebook open on my knees and wrote the date, the time, and everything he'd said, word for word, the way I logged every board decision that mattered. Paper trails save lives. My first company taught me that the hard way. I intended to remember it now.

***

At breakfast the next morning, I told him in the same voice I used with my board.

"I've had my accountant separate the joint accounts. Your access to my personal finances is revoked as of nine a.m. Household expenses split fifty-fifty going forward. Receipts required."

Adrian set down his coffee cup with a click that was probably meant to sound like restraint. "You're weaponizing money like the merchant she is."

"I'm itemizing," I said, and slid a printed notice across the table — account numbers, effective date, my attorney's name at the bottom in bold. "Sandra's been copied on everything. She'll be in touch about the rest."

He didn't pick it up. He looked at it the way he looked at things he considered beneath sterile handling.

I poured my coffee — black, the way I always drank it, pregnant or not, because ordering anything softer in front of him felt like conceding ground I wasn't ready to give — and opened my laptop.

"You'll want to eat something," I said, not looking up. "Long day ahead."

He didn't answer. Outside, the lake was gray and flat, and somewhere across it, in a sterile drawer in his own study, I knew there were photographs of a woman he'd never once described to me as anything but a childhood friend. I typed the first line of a message to Sandra Choi and did not let my hands shake.
