After My Husband Planned My “Accident,” I Destroyed Him Chapter 1

I set the last fork down with a soft click. The dining table stretched out in front of me, long and polished, reflecting the afternoon light coming through the penthouse windows. Twenty place settings. Crystal glasses. White linen napkins folded into perfect triangles. A centerpiece of winter roses and holly that cost more than most people spent on Christmas dinner.

I stepped back and looked at it. Everything in its place. Everything ready.

This penthouse was mine. I bought it six years ago with money I earned before I ever met Desmond Bell. My parents made sure I documented that. At the time, I thought they were being paranoid. Unromantic. I told my mother it was insulting to ask for a prenup, that it meant I didn't trust him.

She looked at me across the table that day and said, "Trust him all you want, Giana. Protect yourself anyway."

I wished I'd listened sooner.

I walked into the study and opened the bottom drawer of my desk. Inside were three years of work. Color-coded folders. Printed bank statements. Medical records in a manila envelope with a date I could never forget. A laptop with files labeled by month and incident. A burner phone with recordings I'd made when Nancy thought I was too stupid to operate a voice memo app.

I checked each one. Then I closed the drawer and went back to the kitchen.

The turkey was in the oven. The side dishes were warming. Everything looked perfect, like I'd spent all day trying to please them. I had. That was the point.

The doorbell rang.

I didn't move right away. I stood at the counter and took a breath. Then I walked to the door and opened it.

Desmond came in first. He didn't wait for me to step aside. He just walked past me into the foyer, already talking. "There she is. My beautiful wife." He said it loud, turning back to smile at me in front of the crowd behind him. "Sweetheart, you didn't have to go to all this trouble."

I smiled. "It's no trouble."

Nancy Bell swept in next, trailing perfume and fur. She wore pearls. She always wore pearls. She looked around the penthouse like she was appraising it for auction, her eyes moving over the furniture, the art on the walls, the view of the city through the floor-to-ceiling windows.

"Lovely as always, Giana," she said. Her tone suggested it wasn't a compliment. "Though I do think the place could use a woman's touch. A real family feel, you know."

I nodded. "I'll keep that in mind."

Then Milani Chavez stepped through the door.

She was younger than me. Prettier, maybe, in the way that confidence makes people pretty. She wore a red dress that hugged her belly. Five months along. She smiled at me slowly, like she'd already won something.

Desmond put his hand on her back and guided her into the living room. "Milani, sit here. You need to rest."

She sank into the armchair by the window — the best seat in the room — and touched her stomach. She did that a lot. Every time I walked past, her hand moved to her belly like she was reminding me.

I turned back to the door. Desmond's relatives poured in behind them. Uncle Walter, loud and red-faced, already talking about the stock market. Aunt Deborah, thin-lipped and sharp-eyed, scanning the penthouse like she was making a mental list of everything she'd change. Cousins I barely knew. Friends of Nancy's who weren't really friends, just people who liked being seen at the right gatherings.

They shed their coats onto my furniture. They speculated loudly about how much the penthouse was worth. They asked Desmond if he was planning to sell it, like it was already his.

He laughed. "We'll see. Giana and I haven't decided yet."

I carried their coats to the closet. I smiled. I offered drinks.

Nancy took over my kitchen without asking. She opened the oven and frowned at the turkey. "The seasoning's all wrong. Didn't I tell you to use rosemary?"

"I did," I said quietly.

"Not enough." She waved me off. "Go check on the champagne. And make sure it's cold this time."

I went to the bar. The champagne was cold. It had been cold for an hour. But I checked it anyway.

Aunt Deborah cornered me by the stove. She stood too close, her voice loud enough for the whole room to hear. "You know, Giana, a real wife would have given her husband a child by now. Five years is a long time. People talk."

I looked at her. "I'm sure they do."

"Desmond deserves a family," she continued. "A man like him needs an heir. It's a wife's duty."

I nodded. I didn't say anything. I just turned back to the stove and stirred something that didn't need stirring.

Nancy's voice rang out from the living room. "Everyone, I have an announcement. Milani is practically family now. She'll be staying in the master bedroom tonight."

She looked directly at me when she said it.

Uncle Walter laughed. A few others joined in. Milani smiled and touched her belly again.

Desmond didn't say anything. He just sipped his drink and looked out the window.

I refilled glasses. I apologized for the champagne being the wrong brand, even though it wasn't. I smiled until my face hurt.

Then I excused myself to the study.

I opened the drawer. I pulled out the stack of documents I'd printed that morning. Twenty copies. One for every person at the table.

I walked back into the dining room. No one noticed at first. They were too busy laughing, drinking, talking about how generous Desmond was to host Christmas this year.

I moved around the table. I placed one document at every place setting. Desmond's. Nancy's. Milani's. Every single relative who'd walked through my door like they owned it.

Then I stood at the head of the table. My table. In my penthouse.

I didn't raise my voice. I didn't need to.

"Before we eat," I said, "I'd like everyone to read what's in front of them."

The room went quiet.

"Desmond will be leaving this marriage tonight," I continued. "He will leave with nothing."

I looked at him. He stared at me like he didn't recognize me.

I smiled.

"Let's begin."
