After My Husband Locked Me Away for His Mistress Chapter 1

Three years ago today, Amos married me in a small stone church upstate. I still remember the smell of the candles. I still remember his hands shaking when he put the ring on my finger.

So for our anniversary, I sent the private chef home early. I wanted to cook his favorite meal myself — braised short ribs, the recipe his grandmother taught me the second year we were married. I set the table with our wedding china, the one with the thin gold rim we never used because Amos said it was "too precious for a Tuesday." Tonight wasn't a Tuesday.

I also had a gift. A vintage watch, restored by a specialist in the Diamond District, engraved on the back with the church date. Our date. I wrapped it in navy paper and tied it with a white ribbon and set it on the table like a promise.

Then I came home early to surprise him before dinner.

The apartment was quiet when I walked in. Too quiet. I climbed the stairs to the primary suite, already smiling, already imagining his face.

The door was open.

Amos was sitting on the edge of our bed, shirt unbuttoned. Cheyenne was standing by the window in my robe. My silk robe, the pale blue one with my initials on the pocket. She didn't even flinch when she saw me. She just tightened the belt a little, like she was cold.

I didn't scream. I didn't cry. Every judge I'd ever skied in front of taught me that — keep your face still, even when your legs are shaking underneath you.

"Get out," I said to her. My voice came out steady. I was proud of that, in some small broken way.

Cheyenne looked at Amos. He nodded, and she slipped past me without a word, leaving a trail of my own perfume behind her.

I turned to my husband. "Three years, Amos. Today."

He didn't stand up. He rubbed his face with both hands like I was the one who'd interrupted something reasonable. "I know what today is, Vivienne."

"Then explain this to me."

"There's nothing to explain." He finally looked at me, and there was no shame in his eyes. None. "I'm tired of being the man who married Vivienne Harper. Do you know what that's like? Every dinner party, every gala — I'm a footnote. 'Oh, and this is her husband.' Cheyenne doesn't do that to me. Cheyenne makes me feel like a man."

I stood there holding a wrapped watch like an idiot.

"I'm not ending it," he added, standing now, buttoning his shirt like this was a business meeting. "But we'll figure out how the house runs. I'll have Marguerite talk to you about the schedule." Then his phone rang, and he actually answered it, and walked out of the room talking about a wire transfer.

I set the watch on the dresser. I didn't unwrap it. I just set it down, next to his cufflinks, and I walked to the guest floor and closed the door.

At three in the morning, I couldn't sleep, so I opened an account I hadn't touched in three years — my old athlete profile, still sitting there with two hundred thousand followers who thought I'd retired for love. There was a notification. A handle I half-recognized, *LivingForViv*, one of those accounts that used to message me every season opener back when I still competed. *The season's starting. Still hoping.*

I stared at it for a long moment. Then I closed the app without answering.

Lylah called the next morning. My sister always knew when something was wrong before I said a word.

"You sound weird," she said. "Flat. What happened?"

"Nothing happened."

"Viv."

"I'm fine, Lylah."

"I'm coming into the city," she said, and hung up before I could argue.

She showed up by noon, still in her college hoodie, dropping her bag in the foyer like she still lived here. She found Cheyenne curled up on my living room sofa in my cream cashmere sweater, scrolling her phone like she owned the place.

Lylah didn't say anything to her. She just grabbed my wrist and pulled me into the kitchen, her voice dropped to a furious whisper.

"That's the housekeeper. Viv, that's the *housekeeper*, wearing your sweater, sitting in your house like she belongs there."

"I know who she is."

"I'm calling a divorce lawyer in the morning," Lylah said. Her eyes were wet, but her jaw was set, stubborn the way it always got when she'd made up her mind about something. "You are not staying with him. You are not doing that thing you do where you go quiet and small and pretend it's fine. I know you, Viv. Let me fight for you. Please. Just this once, let someone fight for you."

I looked at my little sister, twenty-two years old and already braver than I'd been in three years of marriage, and I didn't know yet how much I would need to remember her face exactly like this.
