After My Husband Gave My Song to His Mistress Chapter 1

I woke up on an ordinary Tuesday morning and stared at my hands.

They were smooth. No swollen joints. No pale scars. I pressed the pads of my left fingers against my palm, one by one. The skin was warm and pink. Sensation shot straight up my arm, sharp and alive.

The frostbite was gone.

In my past life, I lost feeling in those three fingers during a February blizzard. I had walked thirty blocks through freezing sleet to get antibiotics for my son, Maddox, while my husband refused to leave his studio. My violin career died that night.

Now, I was twenty-six again.

Fifty years of memories crashed into my skull all at once. Every ironed shirt. Every uncredited melody stolen from my notebooks. Every cold look from Beckett. The weight of it pressed down on my chest like lead.

Tears spilled over my cheeks. I wasn’t crying from relief. I was crying from pure, burning rage.

I got out of bed and walked through the Brooklyn brownstone. The floorboards were cool against my bare feet. Morning light cut through the tall windows, hitting the high crown moldings and polished floors. Beckett always acted like this place was his artistic sanctuary. But I bought it. My Juilliard prize money and early concert tours paid for every single brick.

I stepped into his studio. On the shelf sat my locked leather journal, thick with original scores I had scribbled late at night.

Then I walked into the kitchen. Above the espresso machine, a yellow sticky note hung at eye level: *Oat milk, half a teaspoon of honey.*

I had made his coffee like that every morning for decades.

I reached out, ripped the paper off the cabinet, and tossed it into the trash.

Beckett came home around six. He wore his favorite corduroy jacket, looking comfortably rumpled and self-satisfied. He tossed his keys onto the marble counter and loosened his tie.

"The faculty meeting ran late," he said, not looking at me. "Listen, Everly. We need to talk about the Lincoln Center gala next month."

I stood by the stove, holding a mug of black coffee. "What about it?"

"I talked to the board today. You should step aside and let Yasmin take the violin solo."

The room went still. He said her name with a low, reverent warmth. It was a tone he had never once used for me.

"Yasmin needs the exposure more," Beckett continued smoothly. He walked over to the cabinet for a glass. "Her career is just getting off the ground. You have plenty of time. You can always perform next time."

Next time. In my first life, *next time* never came.

I looked at him. I saw the slight puffiness under his eyes, the weak chin, the absolute certainty that I would roll over.

"No," I said.

My voice was quiet, but it cut through the room like a blade.

Beckett stopped mid-reach. He turned and let out a short, patronizing laugh.

"Don't be childish, Everly," he said. He shook his head like I was a difficult toddler. "This isn't about your pride. Yasmin has a certain... presence. She's simply the better choice for the room. You're being territorial and small."

He reached past me, grabbed a bottle of bourbon, and poured two fingers into his glass. He didn't even care enough to look at my face. He assumed the matter was settled.

I set my mug down on the counter. The ceramic clicked against the stone.

I walked over to the dining table, opened my laptop, and pulled up a contact page I already knew by heart: Sarah Vance, the sharpest family law attorney in New York.

"What are you doing?" Beckett asked from the kitchen, swirling his ice.

"Nothing you need to worry about," I said.

***

By nine o’clock, my retainer was wired to Sarah's firm. By ten, I had pulled every bank statement, deed, and closing document from our safe. The paperwork proved what Beckett had spent years ignoring: the down payment and the mortgage were paid entirely out of my solo performance accounts before our marriage was finalized. Legally, the brownstone was mine.

A 24-hour locksmith arrived at eleven.

I had one of Beckett’s suitcases packed by eleven-thirty. I threw in his corduroy jackets, his fountain pens, and his sheet music. I left the suitcase squarely on the front stoop and locked the heavy front door behind me.

Midnight came and went. The Brooklyn street was quiet under the yellow streetlights.

At twelve-forty, a yellow cab pulled up to the curb. Beckett stepped out, laughing on his phone with someone from the music department. He bounded up the front steps, slid his brass key into the deadbolt, and twisted.

The key didn't turn.

He frowned, pulled it out, and tried again. He jiggled the brass handle. Nothing moved.

Then his foot bumped against the suitcase.

I watched him through the sheer curtains of the second-floor parlor.

Beckett dropped his phone. He looked down at his bag, then up at the fresh, silver lock plate gleaming under the porch light. His eyes went wide. His mouth fell open.

He pounded both fists against the heavy oak door.

"Everly!" he shouted into the empty street. "What the hell is this? Open the damn door!"

I didn't move. I didn't blink.

He thought this was a tantrum. He thought I was just throwing a fit that he could outlast in a week.

Down on the stoop, Beckett yanked at the doorknob again, red-faced and furious. Up in the dark, I pressed my left fingertips against the cold window glass. All five pads pressed flat, steady, and strong.

His time was over. Mine was just beginning.
