I'm already at my desk—two hours in, black coffee going cold, quarterly projections open on one screen and a contract revision on the other. The subject line reads: *For Your Records.* No sender name. Just an address I don't recognize.

I open it.

It takes me a moment to understand what I'm looking at. Then another moment. Then a third.

An invoice. Itemized. Dates going back five years—before Layton was born, before my first cardiac episode, before I signed the company into Cooper's name because he said it would save us money on taxes. Hotel names I recognize. The Carlyle. The Mandarin Oriental. A boutique place in SoHo I once suggested for our anniversary and Cooper said was overpriced.

Room numbers. Dates. Times.

And at the bottom, in clean sans-serif font: *Five years of keeping your husband satisfied. You're welcome. — V.M.*

My smartwatch vibrates against my wrist. Cardiac alert. Heart rate elevated.

I read it again.

Then a third time.

I don't move for a long time.

I wait until evening. I don't know why—some last reflex of the woman I used to be, the one who believed things could still be explained. Cooper is in the living room when I get home, jacket off, drink in hand, looking out at the Manhattan skyline like he owns it.

He does, technically. I let him put his name on everything.

"I need you to tell me this isn't what it looks like," I say.

He turns around. And I know from his face—the absence of surprise, the almost-relief—that he's been waiting for this conversation too.

"It's exactly what it looks like," he says.

The room doesn't spin. I think I expected it to. Instead everything gets very still and very sharp, like the moment before a storm when the air pressure drops and the birds go quiet.

"How long."

"Savannah—"

"How long, Cooper."

"The whole time." He says it gently, like that makes it better. "Violet is—she's the love of my life. I know that's hard to hear. But I think, if you're honest with yourself, you knew something was missing between us."

I look at him. This man whose broken ribs I paid to have treated. Whose $850,000 debt I negotiated away with men who carry bolt cutters. Whose son I carried while working seventy-hour weeks because the company needed me and he needed me and everyone needed me and I told myself that was love.

"I want you to leave," I say.

"That's the thing." He sets down his drink. "I'm not leaving. Violet is moving in. We're all adults. I think we can make this work if you just—"

"She's already here, isn't she."

He doesn't answer. Which is its own answer.

I go upstairs.

The guest suite door is open. Violet Mendoza's clothes hang in the closet—I can see them from the hallway, a row of silk and cashmere arranged like she's been here for years. Her perfume drifts from the bathroom. Her shoes sit by the door in a neat line.

She's standing in the middle of the room, and she looks exactly like what she is: a woman who has already won and knows it.

Then Layton comes around the corner.

My son. Five years old, dark hair, Cooper's jaw and my eyes. He sees Violet and his whole face opens up—that pure, unguarded joy that children do before the world teaches them to be careful with it.

"Mommy!" He runs to her. Wraps his arms around her legs.

I go very still.

I kneel down. I reach for him. "Layton, baby—"

He turns on me fast, faster than I expect, and bites down on my hand. Hard. Hard enough that I feel it in my teeth.

"You're mean!" he screams. "I don't want you!"

I pull my hand back. There's blood.

From the kitchen doorway, Eleanor Andrews—Cooper's mother, a woman who has been smiling at my back for five years—watches with a quiet satisfaction that she doesn't bother to hide. She holds out a glass of wine to Violet.

"Welcome home, sweetheart," she says.

I don't remember getting out of the building. I remember the sidewalk. The cold. My town car at the curb and my driver's face going white when he sees my hand.

My heart is doing something wrong. I can feel it—arrhythmic, lurching, the way it's been doing more and more since the stress started eating through me years ago.

I sit in the private medical suite for three hours. Monitors. IV drip. The particular silence of a room designed to keep you alive.

I stare at the ceiling and I let it all come: the debt I paid, the company I signed away, the health I burned through, the son who just drew blood from my hand while calling another woman Mom.

Somewhere between the second and third hour, something shifts.

The grief doesn't disappear. It freezes.

I sit up. I straighten the IV line. I pick up my phone.

Rachel Hsu answers on the first ring.

"I've been waiting," she says.

"Start tonight," I tell her. "Everything."

I call Marcus Webb next. He picks up in two rings. I give him the same instruction.

My voice doesn't tremble once.
