After My Husband Framed Me to Protect His Mistress Chapter 1

The rain came down in sheets across the windshield as I navigated the FDR Drive, my wipers struggling against the downpour. I was running late for our anniversary dinner—seven years since Cullen had walked away from everything to be with me, and I'd spent the afternoon choosing the perfect gift: a vintage watch he'd once admired in a shop window. The traffic ahead had slowed to a crawl, red brake lights bleeding into the wet darkness. I reached for my phone to text him I'd be a few minutes late when the world exploded into chaos.

The delivery truck came from nowhere, barreling through the red light with its horn blaring. I swerved, but the asphalt was slick, my tires lost their grip, and then my car was spinning, the world a blur of headlights and rain and the sickening screech of metal. The impact threw me forward against the steering wheel, pain blooming across my ribs like fire. Something warm trickled down my temple. I tasted copper.

'Hello? Hello, can anyone hear me?' My voice sounded thin in the crushed stillness of the car. The driver's side door was jammed, the window spiderwebbed with cracks. I fumbled for my phone, miraculously intact in my coat pocket. The screen was fractured but still functioning. I dialed Cullen's number with trembling fingers.

One ring. Two rings. Three. The call went to voicemail. 'Cullen, it's me. I've been in an accident on the FDR. I need—I need help. Please call me back.' I hung up and dialed again. And again. And again.

By the time the first responders arrived, I had called him twenty-seven times. Each call rang out, unanswered, while I sat trapped in the wreckage, my ribs screaming with each breath, blood pooling beneath me. The paramedics worked quickly, cutting through the crushed metal, stabilizing my neck, lifting me onto a gurney. Their voices were professional, detached. 'BP's dropping. Possible internal bleeding. We need to move now.'

The ambulance siren wailed as we raced through the rain-slicked streets toward Mount Sinai. I drifted in and out of consciousness, my phone still clutched in my hand, the screen showing Cullen's contact with twenty-seven missed calls beside it. Where was he? Why wasn't he answering?

The emergency bay was a blur of fluorescent lights and urgent voices. I was wheeled into a curtained alcove, a doctor's hands pressing against my ribs, his face grave. 'Multiple fractures. Possible splenic rupture. We need to get you to CT, stat.' I nodded weakly, still clutching my phone. 'Has anyone called my husband?' I asked. The nurse shook her head. 'We'll try again,' she promised.

As they prepared to move me, I heard voices from the adjacent bay—separated from mine by nothing more than a thin blue curtain. A woman's soft laugh, then a man's voice, low and intimate. I froze, my body suddenly cold despite the pain radiating through me.

'It's just a little paper cut, baby. Don't cry over it.' Cullen's voice. My Cullen's voice, warm and tender in a way I hadn't heard in months. 'I know, but it hurts.' A woman's voice—young, petulant, familiar. Sasha Reyes. 'Here, let me kiss it better.' The sound of a soft kiss, followed by more giggles.

I lay perfectly still, my eyes fixed on the ceiling, my heart hammering against my broken ribs. The nurse returned, checking my IV. 'Your husband is just through there,' she said, gesturing to the curtain. 'He came in with another patient. Should I tell him you're here?'

Through the curtain, I heard her speak to him. 'Mr. Gray? Your wife Marlee has been brought in from an accident on the FDR. She's right here.' There was a pause, and for one breathless moment, I thought he would rush to my side. Instead, his voice was cool, distant. 'I'll deal with it later.'

Something inside me shifted then—a tectonic plate moving deep beneath the surface. The tears that had been threatening dried up instantly. I stopped shaking. The pain in my body receded, overshadowed by a cold, crystalline clarity that spread through my chest.

Later that night, as I lay in a hospital bed with my ribs wrapped and my temple stitched, a nurse—Nora, according to her badge—quietly slipped a phone charger through the gap in my curtain. Our eyes met briefly in the dim light. She gave me a single, small nod—a silent acknowledgment that she had heard everything. It was the first human decency I'd received in hours, and it anchored something cold and certain inside me.

Three days later, I was discharged. Cullen was conveniently at a 'work dinner,' so I took a cab back to our Williamsburg apartment alone. The place felt hollow, every photo of us now a potential lie. I moved through the rooms like a ghost until I reached his study—a room I rarely entered.

In the false bottom of his desk drawer, beneath a stack of innocuous papers, I found lace lingerie that wasn't mine, a burner phone filled with explicit messages between him and Sasha, and Polaroids of them together in hotel rooms, on yachts, in our own bed. My hands were steady as I photographed each item with my phone, documenting every detail. I replaced everything precisely as I'd found it, then walked to the kitchen.

I poured a glass of water, drank it in silence, and picked up the landline. I dialed the number I'd memorized years ago but never used. When Titan Gray answered, his voice cold and imperious, I spoke without hesitation. 'Mr. Gray. This is your daughter-in-law. I'd like to discuss a transaction.'
