After My Husband Faked My Miscarriages for His Mistress Chapter 1

Five years today. I still remember the sound the hospital made when they told me — not words, just a low hum in my ears, like the world had been turned down to static. I drove to Greenwood Cemetery every year on this date with white peonies on the passenger seat, because peonies were my mother's favorite. Margaret Payne loved things that bloomed big and then let go easily. I never understood that until I got older.

Traffic crawled through Seattle's midday drizzle. At a red light on Aurora, I reached for my phone out of habit, the way you scratch an itch without thinking. I opened Instagram. My thumb moved on its own.

The post stopped me cold.

It was from an account I didn't recognize — no profile picture, a string of random letters for a username. But the picture was clear enough. A wrist, pale and manicured, wearing a Cartier bracelet I knew down to the clasp, because I'd seen the receipt in Ledger's email folder eight months ago. He'd told me it was a gift for a client's wife. Next to it, a caramel-colored Hermès bag, tag still swinging.

The caption read: *Five years with my man and his boring little wife still doesn't have a clue 💋*

The light turned green. Someone honked behind me. I didn't move.

I pulled onto the gravel shoulder just past the cemetery gates, engine still running, and scrolled. My hands were steady in a way that scared me later, when I thought back on it — like my body already knew something my mind was refusing to catch up to.

There were more. A story, saved to highlights, captioned *raising someone else's baby while I live my best life 🍾*, tagged at a rooftop bar in Bellevue I'd walked past a hundred times. A DM, sent to me two weeks ago from an account with a stock photo avatar, dripping with fake concern: *hey hun, I know this might be hard to hear, but maybe motherhood just isn't meant for some people. sending love.*

I knew that voice. I'd grown up hearing it needle me across a dinner table.

Sariyah.

My half-sister had never been subtle. Even hiding behind a burner account, her cruelty had a signature, sweet and venomous, like poison dressed up in a bow.

I sat there with the wipers ticking against the windshield, Margaret's headstone visible through the glass fifty yards ahead, gray and small among the wet grass. I waited to cry. I always cried on this day. But nothing came. Instead, something in my chest went quiet, the way a room goes quiet after a door slams shut somewhere far away.

I took screenshots of everything. Every post, every timestamp, every tagged location. My thumb didn't shake once.

Then I got out of the car, peonies in hand, and walked to my mother's grave. The ground was soft from the rain, mud soaking through the knees of my slacks as I knelt.

"I'm going to find out everything," I whispered. "And I'm going to make them pay."

The wind moved through the cedars behind the headstone, and for a second I thought I heard something answer. But it was just branches.

---

By the time I got home to Mercer Island that evening, I'd rebuilt my face into something normal. Ledger was already there, jacket off, sleeves rolled, texting someone with his brows drawn in that focused way that used to make me think, *look how hard he works for us.*

He looked up and smiled when I walked in. "There she is." He crossed the room, took both my hands in his — a gesture he'd done a thousand times, warm palms folding over mine like he was cupping something fragile. "I made a reservation at Canlis. Thought you could use a nice night. I know today's hard."

He kissed my forehead.

I used to melt into that. Tonight I watched it happen from somewhere outside my own body, cataloguing it like evidence. *Both hands. Forehead kiss. Soft voice.* He did this every time before he lied to me. I just hadn't known to count it before.

"I went to the cemetery," I said. "Left her flowers."

"Good." His thumb brushed my knuckle. "She'd be proud of you."

Something flickered behind his eyes — quick, gone in half a second. Not grief. Not even sympathy. Calculation. The look of a man doing math.

I smiled back at him, the way I always did, easy and grateful.

Five years, and I had never once seen him clearly until tonight.

"Canlis sounds lovely," I said.

He kissed me again, longer this time, certain of his victory.

I let him. I had all the time in the world now.
