After My Husband Covered Up My Mother’s Murder Chapter 1

Rain slicked the SoHo streets, reflecting the neon signs in blurry streaks. I held my umbrella tight and walked past the high-end boutiques. Then I saw it. Dorian’s black Bentley. It was idling outside a boutique hotel I didn't recognize. I pulled out my phone and checked his shared calendar. Nothing was listed.

I walked closer, my heels splashing in the puddles. Through the rain-streaked glass, I saw them. Ryleigh, my estranged half-sister. Her hand was gently cupping Dorian’s jaw. His forehead rested against hers. It wasn't a sudden, frantic passion. It was worse. It was the quiet, habitual intimacy of people who had done this a thousand times.

My chest went completely hollow. I stepped off the curb and rapped my knuckles hard on the wet glass.

Dorian’s head snapped up. His eyes widened in pure panic. But he didn't look at me. He looked at Ryleigh. He grabbed her shoulder, pulling her down to shield her face from view. Then, the engine roared. He gunned the accelerator.

The heavy car lurched forward. The side mirror clipped my hip hard. I spun, lost my footing, and hit the wet pavement. My umbrella flew into the street. The rough asphalt shredded the palms of my hands. The silk of my dress tore at the knee. I lay there in the freezing rain, gasping for air. The Bentley’s red taillights disappeared around the corner. He didn't stop.

I sat up slowly. The rain mixed with the blood on my hands. I pressed my thumb hard against the inside of my wrist to stop the tears from falling. Then, I got up alone.

Hours later, Dorian walked into our penthouse. His suit was perfectly dry. His face was composed. He started speaking right away, his voice smooth with rehearsed excuses. “Savannah, about earlier. Ryleigh was having a panic attack. I had to get her out of there fast—”

I cut him off. I didn't scream. I didn't cry. My voice was dead calm. “I saw her hand on your face, Dorian. I saw you lean into her. And then I saw you run me over to protect her.”

I held up my hands. The white bandages were stained with faint spots of red.

He looked away. His jaw tightened. He shifted immediately to his permanent defense. “She saved my life, Savannah. You know the story of the fire. I was twelve. I owe her.”

“You owe her your marriage?” I asked coldly.

“You're being irrational,” he snapped. A sharp edge of anger entered his voice. “Your jealousy is making you crazy. You don't understand what it means to owe someone your existence.”

He delivered the words like a final verdict. The conversation was over. I kept my face completely blank. I refused to give him the satisfaction of seeing my pain. That night, I lay on the absolute edge of our king-sized bed. I stared at the dark ceiling for hours. I didn't touch him.

The next morning, I went to my law firm. I was Manhattan's top divorce attorney. I sat across from a new client. She wept bitterly as she told me her husband had been sleeping with another woman for four years. He was systematically draining their joint accounts. I didn't pity her. I just went to work. I built her case with methodical ferocity. When my paralegal handed me a stack of files, she paused. She looked at the fresh bandages on my hands. She didn't ask, and I didn't explain.

That evening, I drove to the hospital. The ICU was quiet, filled with the steady hum and beep of machines. I placed fresh white lilies in the vase by my mother’s bed. They were her favorite. She looked so frail, hooked up to the ventilator. I sat beside her and read aloud from a novel. When I paused to turn a page, she squeezed my bandaged hand weakly. A lump formed in my throat. I kissed her forehead, then drove home in total silence.

Three weeks passed. The cold war in my marriage settled into a bitter routine. Then, everything shattered.

I was leaving the Spencer building after a tense, silent lunch with Dorian. Ryleigh was walking out of the lobby at the exact same time. Before either of us could speak, a black van screeched to a halt at the curb. Two men jumped out. They were fast, professional, and rehearsed.

They grabbed us. Ryleigh started screaming instantly. But as they shoved us into the back of the van, I noticed something wrong. Her terror was perfectly calibrated. Her sobs were too even. Her flinches were timed just a second too late.

They bound our wrists with zip ties and blindfolded us. We were thrown onto the cold metal floor. After a rough drive, we were dragged into a damp, echoing space. It smelled like salt and old oil. A waterfront warehouse.

We were tied to metal chairs in the pitch black. I listened closely. Ryleigh was sitting just a few feet away. Underneath her fake whimpers, her breathing was perfectly steady. Cold clarity washed over me. This wasn't a random carjacking. This was designed.

A phone rang loudly in the empty room. One of the men answered it and put it on speaker. Dorian’s voice filled the dark warehouse. He sounded frantic.

“I have the money,” Dorian said.

“Wire it now,” the kidnapper barked. “But the boss says you only get one back. Choose.”

My heart stopped. I waited for my husband to demand both of us. I waited for him to scream my name. There was no hesitation. No negotiation.

“Ryleigh,” Dorian said. “Let Ryleigh go.”

The line went dead. The warehouse door squealed open. I heard heavy footsteps walk over to Ryleigh. A knife sliced through her zip ties. I heard her footsteps walk away, light and quick. A car engine started outside and faded into the distance.

I was left behind.

The men walked back into the room. The beating began immediately. It was methodical. They used heavy steel pipes, and they focused entirely on my right leg. Bone cracked. Fire shot up my spine. I bit my tongue until my mouth filled with blood, refusing to give them a scream.

The agony lasted through the endless night. When the police finally stormed the warehouse eighteen hours later, I was lying in a pool of my own blood. The nerve damage in my leg was permanent.
